A 2 post car lift is only useful if you can actually plug it in. We got a call last winter from a farm-shop owner south of Ames who had already bought a lift online and had it sitting on a pallet in his machine shed for six weeks because he thought he needed three-phase power and did not have it. He did not — he just needed to read the motor plate. Electrical is the single most misunderstood part of a 2 post car lift purchase in a rural Iowa shop, so we wrote this checklist. Run through every step before you click buy.

Read the motor plate before you read the sales page
Almost every 2 post car lift sold in North America under 15,000 lb capacity ships with a 220-240V single-phase motor as standard. Three-phase is an option for commercial shops with three-phase utility service, but it is not required. Farm shops in central Iowa almost always run single-phase off the pole transformer, so if you own a well pump or a 5 hp compressor, you already have what the lift needs. Look at the manufacturer spec sheet — Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas all publish motor plates in their install manuals — and confirm 208-230V single-phase, 60Hz. If the sales page defaults you to three-phase, change the option before checkout or call us. We fix this mistake every month.
Amperage, breaker size, and dedicated versus shared
A standard 10,000 lb 2 post car lift draws roughly 15-25 amps under lift load with a single-phase motor. NEC requires a dedicated 30-amp circuit for most units, and every manufacturer we sell asks for a dedicated line in writing. Do not share the circuit with your shop compressor, your welder, or your fluorescent lights. The startup current on a lift motor is high and it will nuisance-trip a shared breaker every time you raise a vehicle. Run 10 AWG copper minimum from the panel to a fused disconnect within eyesight of the operator side column. Standard 25-30 amp thermal-magnetic breaker at the panel, and a proper fused disconnect at the lift so a technician can lock it out for service.
Where the disconnect actually goes
Manufacturers require a disconnect within sight of the lift; OSHA requires lockout capability. On a farm-shop wall, that usually means a small NEMA 3R enclosure mounted 5 feet up on the column-side wall, 6 to 10 feet from the operator column. Do not put it behind the lift, do not put it around a corner, and do not zip-tie the door open. We have seen good farm shops fail insurance inspections because the lift disconnect was on the far wall behind a parts shelf. If your panel is on the opposite end of a 40-foot shop, budget 40 feet of conduit and a proper subfeed rather than running a long extension of romex.
Rural co-op transformer sizing
This is the one that surprises Ames-area customers. A lot of rural farm shops are fed by a 15 kVA pole-mount transformer that was sized for a house, a well, and a barn — not a shop with a lift, a compressor, and a welder all running. Add up your worst-case simultaneous load. If you plan to run a 5 hp compressor while lifting a truck and welding, you can push a 15 kVA can into voltage sag territory, and lift motors do not like sag. Call your rural electric co-op and ask what transformer feeds your service. Upsizing to 25 kVA is a routine service ticket and usually free or low-cost. Do it before the lift arrives, not after.
Grounding, GFCI, and the grumpy old service
Farm-shop electrical services in Iowa vary wildly. If your service was installed before 1996, it may not have a proper equipment ground back to the panel bus, and older ungrounded services will fail the lift’s electrical inspection. GFCI is not required on the lift circuit itself (dedicated equipment), but the shop’s general receptacles should be GFCI in accessible locations. If you are already opening the panel to add a 30-amp circuit for the 2 post car lift, this is the day to have your electrician correct any ungrounded circuits and bond the neutral properly. Add a whole-shop surge protector while you are in there; farm-shop power quality is not what it is in town.
Single-phase versus three-phase — when to actually pay for it
If you own a 20K or 25K heavy-duty 2 post car lift for tire rotation on grain trucks, three-phase motors last longer and pull less amp per pound lifted. If you have three-phase service through a co-op agricultural feed or a phase converter, use it. Otherwise, stay single-phase. Standard-duty lifts up to 15K are perfectly happy on single-phase and cost less to install. We rarely recommend a rotary phase converter just to run a lift — the converter costs almost as much as the utility upgrade would, and the utility upgrade helps every other piece of shop equipment too.
Test the circuit before install day
Two weeks before we deliver the lift, we ask farm-shop customers to have their electrician land the circuit at the disconnect and label it. On install day we plug in a clamp meter, cycle the motor with no load, and read amp draw. If it pulls out of spec, we call the electrician back before we drop a vehicle on the arms. Also ask your electrician to leave you with a labeled panel and a photo of the completed circuit — it is worth ten minutes now to save a future troubleshooting call.
