A Waukee overland builder came to us in the spring of 2025 needing a 2 post car lift for alignment work on customer trucks – lifted Tacomas, F-250s carrying two-inch level kits, JLs on 37s, the occasional Sprinter conversion. The build-out was already spending real money on the shop, and the owner had heard enough horror stories about off-brand lift service to want a serious conversation about brand history and parts pipeline before he signed a purchase order. Why an overland builder needs a 2 post car lift more than a 4-post

Overland shops touch three vehicle areas constantly – the suspension, the drivetrain, and the wheel-and-tire package. Every one of those jobs asks for a lift that picks the vehicle up by the frame with the wheels hanging free. A 4-post cannot do that from the deck without an add-on rolling jack, and even with the jack the wheel position is compromised. A 2 post car lift is the correct answer for a shop that does bumper installs, rear axle upgrades, differential covers, front-end rebuilds, and alignment. The Waukee owner already had a 4-post for storage and inspection. He was adding the two-post specifically to handle work that the storage lift could not do well. That is the right sequence. Buy the working lift for the work you do most often, and add storage separately. He was clear that alignment was going to run at least a third of the shop’s billable hours because most overland customers show up asking for it after new tires.

The alignment problem specific to lifted trucks

Alignment on a lifted truck is different from alignment on a stock car in one specific way – the arms of the 2 post car lift have to clear a much larger tire package and the pinch weld pickup points are often obstructed by rock sliders and aftermarket bumpers. Standard pad sets do not always reach the frame with a rock slider hanging six inches off the rocker. The Waukee owner told us his previous shop had run into this exact issue on a customer’s Gladiator – the arms would not reach the frame without pinching the slider mount. We solved it in the spec phase by choosing a lift with an asymmetric arm design and adding an aftermarket set of frame-cradle extension pads. That combination cleared every truck he had in the shop the week we delivered. Alignment work also demands a level lift – not level to the room, but level to the two arm pairs. We spent an extra thirty minutes at install shimming under the columns to bring the pad heights within an eighth of an inch of each other across the diagonal.

The brand history conversation: Rotary, Challenger, and who has been around

The owner asked us bluntly which brands were still going to have parts in twenty years. That is a fair question and the answer is honest. Rotary Lift, based in Madison, Indiana, has been building lifts since 1925. Every model they sell today has parts available for the model from thirty years ago. Challenger Lifts, based in Louisville, Kentucky, is a Snap-On subsidiary and has the same long parts horizon. Both companies publish full exploded-view part diagrams and support them through a national distributor network. On the home-grade side, BendPak and Atlas are also legitimate long-history brands, though the parts backstop is thinner than the two commercial names. Off-brand imports show up on Craigslist and Marketplace all the time. Some of them are fine mechanically. None of them have a parts pipeline you can bet a business on. For a customer-facing overland shop billing labor by the hour, you cannot afford a lift that goes down waiting for a proprietary cylinder to ship from an overseas factory.

Parts pipeline – what happens on year seven when a cylinder leaks

Year seven of ownership is when the first significant service call usually lands. A hydraulic cylinder develops a seep at the rod seal, or the equalizer cable frays enough that the safety inspector flags it. On a Rotary or Challenger 2 post car lift, the replacement cylinder and cable are stock items we can pull from a warehouse in the Midwest. On our own store lookup, both are in-stock as of the day we published this article. For the Waukee shop, the parts pipeline decision translated to guaranteed same-week service on any single-component failure. On the off-brand alternative he had been considering, the same replacement would have been an eight-to-twelve week ocean freight order with no guarantee of dimensional match. He calculated the cost of a two-week bay closure at approximately $8,400 in lost billable hours. The price delta between the branded lift and the off-brand was about $1,900. The math never got closer than that. He bought the branded lift and the pipeline that came with it.

The Waukee install: slab, electrical, and unload

The shop was in a leased pole-barn with a slab already poured to seven inches at 4,000 psi and rebar on twelve-inch centers. We were happy. The owner had specified the slab thickness to the landlord during the buildout, which is the right way to handle a leased space. Electrical was 220 volt single-phase pulled to a subpanel within eight feet of the powerside column. Ceiling height was 15 feet 6 inches at the truss center. Nothing about the site required compromise on lift choice. Delivery came in on a Tuesday and we scheduled install for the following Monday to give the columns a day to warm from the trailer temperature. Unload was a skid steer with pallet forks – ten minutes to move the pallet off the semi and into the bay. Install took just under seven hours from anchor drill to final load-test cycle. We handed off with a full site-specific inspection log and a quarterly service calendar synced to the owner’s Google account.

First-year performance and the two service calls

In the first year of operation, the shop billed just over 400 alignment jobs on the new 2 post car lift. Two service calls landed in that window. The first was a cable adjustment at the sixty-day mark – normal break-in stretch, we adjusted the equalizer in about twenty minutes. The second was a small hydraulic fluid check at eight months when the owner noticed the raise speed dropping. We checked the reservoir, topped it off with the correct AW-32 grade, and cycled the lift ten times to bleed a small air pocket that had developed. Both calls were included in the year-one support package. Zero downtime beyond the actual visit time. The owner told us at year-end that the alignment station was the highest-margin bay in his shop, and that the lift had paid for itself in the first eight months of billing. That is not a story we tell to sell the equipment – it is what the numbers were when we sat down with him at the twelve-month check-in.

What the owner would do differently and what we would repeat

At the twelve-month review, the Waukee owner said he would do one thing differently. He wished he had specified an even taller ceiling because his pole-barn build allows a customer’s fifth-wheel hitch to touch the crossbar at full lift extension on the tallest F-250. That is a one-off, but he flagged it, and if he adds a second bay he will spec eighteen feet of clear height. What we would repeat – every decision. The brand choice, the asymmetric arms, the frame-cradle extensions, the seven-inch slab, the eight-foot electrical run, the Monday install schedule.
