A heavy-duty truck shop in east-central Iowa asked us for a twenty-year cost breakdown on a 2 post car lift before they signed a purchase order for four units to outfit a new bay. They service class-4 and class-5 trucks, heavy pickups, and the occasional wrecker chassis, and they wanted to know what the equipment costs over the working life, not just the sticker price. This is the breakdown we put together, generalized to protect the customer’s identity. Every number reflects an Iowa install and service reality. Tire rotation was the highest-frequency service they were sizing for.

Why a heavy-duty shop still uses a 2 post car lift
For anything over roughly 14,000 pounds curb, most heavy-duty shops move to a mobile column system that goes around the vehicle instead of underneath. That is correct for a fully loaded medium-duty box truck. But for the pickup work most heavy-duty shops still see – one-tons, three-quarter-tons, HD wreckers with rated capacities under 14,000 pounds – a 2 post car lift in the 15,000 or 18,000 pound class is the right piece of equipment. It cycles faster, it holds tighter tolerances on wheel alignment, and it lets a technician stand upright under a truck instead of stooping between mobile columns. The east-central Iowa shop we quoted was going to run two heavy-duty two-posts for pickup and light-duty truck work and reserve their mobile-column system for the medium-duty trucks. Four units total in the new bay – two heavy two-posts and two mobile-column sets – was the right layout. Sizing was driven by their heaviest common vehicle, which was a Ram 5500 chassis at roughly 12,800 pounds gross.
Year zero: the lift, the freight, and the install
A commercial-grade 15,000-pound 2 post car lift lands in the mid-seven-thousand-dollar range in the current market. An 18,000-pound version runs in the low nine-thousand range. Freight from the manufacturer’s Midwest depot to east-central Iowa is typically six to nine hundred dollars per unit depending on truck route and residential-versus-commercial delivery. Install for a commercial account is usually a flat rate we quote based on slab condition, electrical location, and any concrete work needed. On a fresh slab with electrical stubbed to the columns, install runs between eight hundred and twelve hundred dollars per lift. Where install climbs is when we need to core through an existing slab and place helical piles or when the electrical panel is on the wrong wall and needs a fifty-foot run. For the east-central Iowa shop the four-unit order came in with a total year-zero cost of just under thirty-five thousand dollars including freight and install. That is the sticker. Everything else is service and consumables.
Year one through five: consumables and adjustment
The first five years of a properly installed 2 post car lift are the cheapest years. Consumables in this window are mostly rubber pads, arm restraint grease, and one round of anchor bolt re-torquing at the twelve-month mark. Budget a hundred to a hundred and fifty dollars per lift per year for pads. Anchor re-torque takes an hour on-site and runs a hundred and twenty dollars in labor if we do it during a scheduled maintenance visit. There should be zero major service calls in years one through five if the equipment was installed correctly. If a shop is calling for service more than once in the first two years, the install is what to inspect – not the lift. Across four lifts over five years, the east-central Iowa shop was looking at approximately three thousand dollars in consumables plus about twenty-four hundred in scheduled maintenance visits. That is under six thousand dollars for five years of hard commercial use. Averaged across four units and five years, that is about three hundred dollars per lift per year. Manageable.
Years five through ten: cables, hoses, and the first cylinder reseal
Between years five and ten the first real service investments hit. Equalizer cables show enough wear that we replace them proactively – one cable set per lift, roughly three to four hundred dollars per lift including the labor. Hydraulic hoses that live outdoors or near hot exhaust runs get replaced as a set, another two to three hundred per lift. Around year eight in a heavy-duty commercial application, the hydraulic cylinder often needs a reseal – not a full replacement, just a new set of rod seals and a wiper. That reseal runs between four hundred and six hundred dollars including the fluid change and refill. Add another round of anchor bolt inspection and any that measure below the manufacturer’s minimum torque get replaced. Across the second five-year block, expect fifteen hundred to twenty-five hundred dollars per lift in service investment. For the east-central Iowa shop, that meant a budget line item of six thousand to ten thousand across the four lifts for years five through ten combined. Still cheaper than replacing a single lift outright, which is the point.
Years ten through fifteen: the mid-life rebuild question
Ten to fifteen years in is when we have the mid-life rebuild conversation with a shop owner. On some lifts the cylinder is candidly done – internal wear, not just seals – and needs replacement. That runs between twelve hundred and eighteen hundred dollars per side, and on a two-cylinder lift both usually go together. Power units age too. A hydraulic pump and motor that has cycled tens of thousands of times can start to run warm and slow, and a full power-unit replacement is typically between eight hundred and twelve hundred dollars. At this point the shop has a decision. Rebuild the existing lift for around three to four thousand and get another eight to ten years, or replace it outright for the current market price. In east-central Iowa with a commercial 2 post car lift that has been maintained on schedule, we usually recommend the rebuild. The columns, arms, and safety systems are still perfectly serviceable, and the rebuild investment is roughly a third of the replacement cost. The four-unit shop would face this window between years ten and fifteen and budget approximately fifteen thousand across the fleet.
Years fifteen through twenty: retirement and disposal
By years fifteen to twenty, a heavily-used commercial 2 post car lift is on the runway to retirement. The rebuild you did at year twelve is holding, but small annoyances are accumulating – a pad that will not stay put, a solenoid that clicks twice before it engages, a small hydraulic weep that the tech keeps a shop-rag on top of. When the annual service bill on a single lift crosses one thousand dollars two years in a row, replacement usually pencils out. Disposal is straightforward. A used commercial lift with documented service history has scrap value or resale value in the low four figures. We often trade in on new orders and rebuild the old unit for the used market. For the east-central Iowa fleet, plan for replacement of two of the four lifts sometime between year fifteen and eighteen, with the other two potentially running to year twenty depending on utilization. That is the shape of the twenty-year curve. Not linear – front-loaded on capex, quiet in the middle, and back-loaded on replacement.
What the twenty-year annualized number actually looks like
Sum the twenty-year picture for one commercial-grade 15,000-pound 2 post car lift on a healthy install. Year zero: about ninety-five hundred dollars all-in. Years one through five: about fifteen hundred in consumables and scheduled service. Years five through ten: about two thousand in cables, hoses, and reseal. Years ten through fifteen: about four thousand for a rebuild. Years fifteen through twenty: variable, but budget another two to three thousand in service until replacement. Total across twenty years is roughly nineteen to twenty-one thousand dollars for a lift that supports a heavy-duty pickup service business. Annualized, that is a thousand to eleven hundred dollars per lift per year. Divided by the daily service volume – a shop doing eight tire rotations plus routine service across two heavy-duty two-posts is billing tens of thousands per bay per month – the annualized lift cost is under two percent of bay revenue. That is the number to hand a bank when you are financing a shop expansion. It is a small line item on a good business.
