2 Post Car Lift Cost Breakdown for Marion Truck Shop

A heavy-duty truck shop owner in Marion, Iowa wanted a full 2 post car lift cost breakdown before he signed anything. His fleet of medium-duty trucks needed off-season parking with quick service access, and he was tired of splitting his winter storage bay across three separate rented locations. Setting the Scope

The Lift Itself

A 15,000 lb commercial 2 post car lift is a materially heavier piece of iron than a 10K residential unit. The columns are thicker, the top rail is deeper, the hydraulic power unit is upsized, and the arms carry heavier gearing. That translates to the largest single line on the cost breakdown. What you are buying at this price point is duty cycle. A 15K lift will service medium-duty trucks daily for fifteen years with routine maintenance. A cheaper lift will not.

Freight to Marion

Where freight gets expensive is anywhere off a major interstate or with liftgate delivery required at destination. Concrete Verification and Anchor Kit

Anchor kits ship with most modern 2 post car lift models. What is not included is the concrete work if your slab is deficient. Marion’s slab was already spec-appropriate, so this line was zero on his breakdown. On other jobs we have quoted, a saw-cut and pour of a fresh 6-foot square section at each column adds a meaningful cost that is often overlooked in the initial budget. Anchor bolts themselves are consumable: they get torqued once and stay in the concrete for the life of the lift. If you ever move the columns, you cut them off flush and drill new holes. Do not skip a professional anchor pull test at install. It costs almost nothing and it is your entire safety story.

Electrical Rework

A 15,000 lb 2 post car lift typically requires 240V three-phase power at 30 amps, though some models offer a single-phase option. Marion had three-phase already, so his electrical line was small: a dedicated breaker, disconnect switch, and a short conduit run to the column mount. Shops without three-phase pay a real premium here, either for a rotary phase converter (roughly the cost of a small used pickup) or for a utility upgrade if the grid nearby supports it. Before you sign the lift purchase, get an electrician to quote the circuit. This is the line that surprises budgets more than any other. Overhead versus baseplate does not affect electrical.

Install Labor

Our install crew charges a fixed rate for a two-post commercial install in Iowa, and that rate covers unload, anchor drill, column set, top rail assembly (overhead), cable and hydraulic run, power unit mount, first-cycle verification, and load test. For the Marion job, install ran a single day. If your slab needs saw-cutting, if your ceiling has obstructions, or if you need custom column offsets, that extends install time and cost. Overhead vs Baseplate Cost Delta

Baseplate 2 post car lift models are typically a few percent cheaper than the equivalent overhead unit at the lift line, because the top rail assembly is simpler. Install labor also drops a bit because there is no top rail to hoist. The tradeoff is the floor hydraulic and cable run, which becomes a permanent tripping hazard and complicates transmission jack work.
