Every month an EV specialty shop in northwest Iowa calls us about a 2 post car lift and repeats the same folk wisdom about concrete: four inches is fine, rebar doesn’t matter, older slabs are stronger because they’ve cured longer. We install and service lifts for a living from our shop in Ames, so we hear these myths on the phone before we ever roll up with a hammer drill. When you’re pulling battery packs, dropping subframes, and cycling suspension work day after day, the slab under the lift is not a detail to shrug off. Let’s kill the myths one at a time.

The “Four Inches of Concrete Is Plenty” Myth

Four inches gets thrown around as gospel, and it is wrong for most modern lifts. Rotary and Challenger both spec a minimum of 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for their common 10,000 lb symmetric 2 post car lift, and the heavier commercial columns want more. EV work makes that spec even more important, because you are frequently lifting a battery-heavy vehicle whose center of mass sits noticeably lower and further rearward than a comparable ICE car. When the arms swing to that CG, all the load transfers to the column base and its anchors. A four-inch slab in a converted farm building with no vapor barrier, sitting on sand, is not the same as a poured-and-vibrated commercial pad. If you are not sure what you have, we bring a core drill and check it before we sell you anything.

Why EV Suspension Work Changes the Load Picture

Suspension and shock replacement on an EV means you are lifting the sprung mass and holding it there while the wheels and control arms hang. The lift arms take an offset load, the pads sometimes have to reach past a battery skid plate, and the vehicle sits on your 2 post car lift for a longer cycle than a quick oil change. A Model Y or Lightning is 5,000 to 6,600 lbs before you add the tech and lift attachments. If your slab or anchors are marginal, this is the work that reveals it. We have inspected columns that were quietly walking a sixteenth of an inch every lift cycle for years, until finally the anchor sleeves cracked the concrete around them.

The Rebar and Reinforcement Question

Rebar is not required by every 2 post car lift manufacturer, but it changes everything about how the slab behaves once you drill and torque anchors. A slab with #4 rebar on 18-inch centers distributes anchor pull-out forces across a much larger footprint. A plain slab does not. If your building was poured before you owned it and you have no idea what is in the pad, plan on either a core sample or a dedicated anchor pad. We have poured 4×4 foot anchor pads for EV shops when the surrounding slab was fine for parking but not for a lift column, and it costs less than replacing the whole floor.

Concrete Age and Cure Are Not the Same

Old concrete is not automatically better concrete. What matters is the mix design and the cure it got the first 28 days. A 40-year-old barn floor that was hand-troweled over dirt with no vapor barrier can be softer than a properly poured slab from last month. When we test-drill for anchors and get powder instead of dust, that slab is done. New concrete you poured yourself for the 2 post car lift needs to cure a full 28 days before anchor installation. We will not torque anchors into a 10-day slab, no matter how much someone wants us to.

The Pull-Test We Recommend

Before we mount columns, we set a pilot anchor and pull-test it with a calibrated gauge. That single check has saved shops thousands of dollars in mid-install column relocations. The test takes 30 minutes and confirms the anchor will hold its rated load. If your existing 2 post car lift installer skipped this step, that is a red flag. We treat it as standard on every EV bay we touch, because the last thing anyone wants is to find the problem after a $70,000 truck is 6 feet in the air.

When a Slab Retrofit Beats a Fresh Pour

A full slab tear-out and re-pour is expensive and shuts the bay down for a month. In most EV shop retrofits we handle in northwest Iowa, we can bring the existing floor up to spec with two 4×4 foot dowel-pinned anchor pads under the columns. That approach lets you keep working around the rest of the bay while the pads cure. It is only appropriate when the surrounding slab is structurally sound and only the anchor zones need reinforcement. We walk through the decision with you before we quote anything, so you are not paying to solve a problem you do not have.

We confirm slab thickness, check for rebar with a scanner when needed, verify ceiling height and column clearance, and price the anchor solution before we quote the lift.
