2 Post Car Lift Warranty: What It Actually Covers on Commercial Work

Alignment Machine For Sale Boca Raton, FL

Contact Us

A tire and alignment shop in the Iowa Great Lakes region called us in early summer needing a 2 post car lift to replace an aging inground unit that had started leaking. What made his call different from most was that he opened with a warranty question rather than a price question — his last lift had failed under warranty and the manufacturer had refused the claim over paperwork he hadn’t kept. He wanted to know exactly how our warranty worked, what paperwork he needed, and whether the safety systems on the new lift would be covered. We answered by walking him through the warranty as a safety feature, not a marketing bullet.

Every commercial lift we ship comes with registration filed by us, install certificate on file, and a maintenance log card zip-tied to the column.

Warranty as a Safety Feature

Every 2 post car lift we sell into a commercial shop carries a manufacturer warranty on structural components (10 years typical on columns, arms, and carriages) plus a shorter warranty on wear components (2 to 5 years on cables, hoses, and hydraulic seals). We treat the warranty as a safety feature because a failed cable or a cracked column carriage on a lift under load is a life-safety event. When a component fails inside warranty, we replace it fast — same-day parts shipping if we have stock, next-day if we don’t. The Iowa Great Lakes shop owner’s previous experience was different: the manufacturer had demanded proof of quarterly maintenance, and the shop couldn’t produce logs, and the claim was denied. That’s a real pattern and it’s the reason we include a laminated maintenance card with every install and set 90-day check-back calls. The warranty is only as good as the paperwork behind it. We handle the paperwork side alongside the customer so nothing falls through the cracks. That’s not a value-add — that’s baseline for how a warranty on a safety-critical piece of equipment should work.

What’s Covered on a Commercial Lift

Commercial 2 post car lift warranty coverage typically breaks into four buckets. Structural: columns, base plates, carriages, arm assemblies. Ten-year coverage on Rotary and Challenger commercial lines. Mechanical: sheaves, pins, lock ladders, safety systems. Five-year on most brands. Hydraulic: cylinders, power unit, hoses, fittings, valves. Two years typical. Electrical: motor, contactor, switches. Two years typical. Cables and consumables: equalizer cables get 1 to 2 years depending on brand. Everything is pro-rated in the sense that the labor to install a warranty part is not included after year one — that’s a real detail buyers miss. We include first-year labor on any warranty claim we service ourselves; after year one the customer pays labor at our commercial rate. That’s transparent and it’s disclosed on every quote. The Iowa Great Lakes customer had misunderstood his previous warranty and thought labor was covered lifetime. It wasn’t. We showed him the actual coverage tables side by side so he knew what he was buying. The warranty on our commercial lines is genuinely good — but the buyer has to understand what “covered” means in a legal document versus in a sales pitch.

The Claim Workflow When Something Goes Wrong

When a warranty claim opens, the workflow is: customer calls us at 800-674-9302, describes the failure, photographs the affected component and sends the photos, and provides the lift serial number. We open the claim with the manufacturer, they authorize the part or repair, we ship or dispatch. For a 2 post car lift under warranty, most claims close within 5 business days. Fast claims require documentation: the original sales invoice, the install completion certificate we issued, the daily maintenance log, and photos of the failure. We store the first two documents in our system so the customer only has to produce the log. That’s the piece we harp on — keep the maintenance log. A daily lock-drop test, weekly cable inspection, monthly hydraulic check, quarterly anchor torque. Sign the card each time. Total time per day: about 90 seconds. When something fails, that card is the difference between a covered claim and a denied claim. The Iowa Great Lakes customer’s previous denial had come down to no log. We’re not going to let that happen again on our watch.

Differential Service and Arm Load

Differential fluid service pulls one specific load into the lift arms. The tech drains the diff, rotates the diff cover position, sometimes drops the diff cover entirely to access internals, and refills. On a live-axle vehicle (most pickups and older SUVs) the axle is a substantial mass hanging off the rear arms. The lift needs to hold the vehicle stable while the tech applies rotational torque to bolts around the diff cover. That’s a lateral load, not just vertical. Our recommended 2 post car lift setup for a tire and alignment shop that also does diff service uses swivel arm restraints and a slightly heavier arm rating than the vehicle weight would strictly require. We also spec drop-end arms so the pickup point is low enough to clear a modern lifted pickup’s frame. Diff service on a Cummins-equipped Ram 3500 at full curb weight is a real load — the shop routinely lifts 7,500-pound vehicles. We spec a 12,000-pound lift for that work, not a 10K, because the margin absorbs the lateral load without stressing the arm pivots. Small spec details like this determine whether a lift lasts 10 years or 20.

Safety Lock Systems and Warranty

The safety lock system is the single most warranty-covered component on a modern 2 post car lift because it’s the last line of defense if hydraulics fail. Every column has a lock ladder — a steel plate with slots every 3 inches — plus a spring-loaded pawl that engages the slots on the way up and holds under load. If a hydraulic hose ruptures, the vehicle drops onto the nearest lock, not to the floor. Warranty on the lock system is typically 10 years covering the lock ladder, the pawl, and the release cable. Failure modes are rare but they happen: a bent lock ladder from an over-torqued arm, a broken release cable from cold-weather brittleness, a stuck pawl from grease contamination. We inspect the lock system at every 90-day check-back call and photograph the condition for the file. If we see wear or damage, we open a claim before the shop has a problem. The Iowa Great Lakes shop had never had a proactive lock inspection on the previous lift. That was part of why the previous claim went sideways — nobody was watching. Our commercial customers get watched.

Registration and the Two-Week Window

The registration process is the single fastest way a warranty can go bad. Every 2 post car lift ships with a registration card that has to be returned to the manufacturer within a specific window — usually 30 days but sometimes 14 days for full coverage. If the card doesn’t arrive, the warranty defaults to a shorter term. We register every lift we sell on behalf of the customer within 24 hours of install completion. That closes the window and the customer never has to think about it. If a shop buys a lift from an online reseller and does its own install, that 30-day window is easy to miss. We’ve seen shops discover 18 months in that they had 90 days of warranty instead of 10 years because the registration card sat in a pile of shop paperwork. That’s not the manufacturer being unreasonable — that’s the buyer skipping a paperwork step. We eliminate the risk by handling it for the customer at install. Small process detail; large financial protection.
