An off-road builder in the Quad Cities called us last winter about a 2 post car lift for a workshop he was putting behind his house, and the numbers he thought he had did not match the numbers his ceiling actually gave him. The overlander who called us with a 12-foot ceiling
The Quad Cities builder we worked with owned a lifted midsize truck with a rooftop tent and a full rack, and he had a detached shop with a nominal twelve-foot ceiling. He wanted a 2 post car lift because he did his own wheel-bearing service every fall and he was tired of laying on the concrete. He assumed twelve feet was plenty. It was not, once we measured. The nominal ceiling was twelve feet at the peak of the truss, but the working ceiling under the flat portion was eleven feet six inches, and a HVAC line dropped another six inches over the exact spot he wanted the columns. His actual lift envelope was about ten feet ten. That changed the shopping list. Nominal ceiling is what most owners quote us. Actual working ceiling is what determines whether a lift fits.
Ceiling height math for lifted trucks and roof-tent rigs
Here is the math for a lifted rig on a 2 post car lift. Start with the actual overall height of the truck with the rack and tent installed. Add the pad and arm height at rest (typically about six inches). Add the vertical travel you want above rest to do the work (about five feet for comfortable wheel-bearing work). That total is the minimum ceiling you need. On our overlander’s build, the truck measured eight feet even with rack and tent, the pad plus arm plus travel added another five and a half feet, and the total came to about thirteen and a half feet. His actual ceiling was ten feet ten. He was not lifting his rig high enough to stand under with the tent on. We solved it by removing the tent for lift days, which saved him almost three feet, and we sized the lift to the tent-off working envelope.
Door swing and how it changed the pad orientation
Overhead doors swing up and back into the ceiling, and on a shop with a twelve-foot door and an eleven-foot-six flat ceiling, the door rolled back on the exact plane where the arms of a 2 post car lift wanted to reach. That constrained the column placement. We rotated the pad orientation, which on the Rotary versymmetric SPO10 was a simple setup change, and we set the arms to swing away from the door track rather than toward it. That let the truck enter, come up, and let the arms rotate without hitting the door hardware. On a symmetric-only lift we could not have done it. Door swing is one of those measurements owners forget until the install crew is on site. We measured it at the initial visit and drew the plan on the floor with chalk before we committed to a column location.
Choosing a 2 post car lift for a wheel-bearing-heavy workflow
Wheel-bearing service is a heavy but slow job. The wheel is off, the caliper is off, the rotor is off, and the hub is coming apart with a slide hammer. That means side-loading and tapping and hammering while the truck is at working height. A lift that flexes under that kind of work is a lift that gets tiring fast, and the columns on some cheaper two-posts are lighter than they look. For our overlander, we quoted the Rotary SPO10 as a straight recommendation over other options because the SPO10 columns are heavy enough to shrug off hub work without complaint. Twelve-gauge sheet metal on a column looks the same as fourteen-gauge in a photo, and the price gap is small. The feel is not.
What we changed at install versus the original plan
By the time we actually installed, three things had changed from the original plan. First, the column placement moved eight inches south to get clear of the door track. Second, the arm orientation set to swing away from the door. Third, the electrical disconnect moved from the wall he originally planned to the wall opposite, because the panel run was shorter and the operator sight-lines were better. The concrete work was minor: the slab was five inches at proper strength and we did not need to patch anywhere. Total install was a day and a half. Nothing on the original phone call had prepared him for the door-swing constraint, and nothing on the manufacturer spec sheet had told him about tent removal. That kind of adjustment is normal on a real install, and it is the reason we do a site visit before we sign the quote.
First six months: what he would do differently now
Six months in, the overlander told us two things. He would have run the 220V drop earlier, before he finished the drywall, because retrofitting was harder than he expected. And he would have installed a lift with slightly more vertical travel, if his ceiling had allowed it, because there were vehicles his friends brought over that he could not comfortably lift with the tent on his own rig for reference. Neither of those changes is a regret about the lift itself. Both are learnings about the build-out sequence. Add pad and travel to figure your real envelope. Look at the door swing and any HVAC or lighting drops. Plan the electrical before drywall. Then pick the lift.
