The lift itself: what you actually pay for
A 2 post car lift for a heavy-duty truck shop is not a 9,000-pound residential unit. The lightest capacity we will quote for a shop that services one-ton service trucks and up is 12,000 pounds, and the honest recommendation for a mixed fleet including Class 4 and 5 medium-duty is 15,000 pounds. Price bands scale accordingly. A commercial-grade 12,000-pound lift from Rotary or Challenger lands in the mid four figures. A 15,000-pound heavy-duty lift with taller columns and longer arms lands in the higher four figures to low five figures. The difference is not just steel weight — it is arm geometry, hydraulic cylinder bore, and cable diameter, all of which have to survive daily heavy-duty use.
Inside that lift price you are paying for arm restraints, safety cams, hydraulic cylinders, hoses, powerhead, equalization cables, sheaves, anchor kit, and shipping crate. Freight is separate and typically runs a few hundred dollars from the manufacturer’s warehouse to central Iowa on a common carrier. We build the freight into the delivered price on every quote we send, so what you sign is what you pay. There are no reveal-at-checkout fees. If you want the manufacturer’s carton to arrive on a specific day for coordination with your electrician, we book that too and note it on the order.
Slab work: the line item that surprises people
West Des Moines shops built in the 1990s and later usually have a six-inch commercial slab with rebar or wire mesh, which is inside spec for a 12,000 to 15,000-pound 2 post car lift. Shops in older buildings — or the back half of a leased strip building where the slab was poured light — sometimes come up short. We recommend a core sample before install day, which runs a couple hundred dollars from a local concrete testing firm. If the slab passes, you drill and set anchors and the total slab cost is zero.
If the slab fails, you have two paths. Path one: pour a lift pad, which is a thickened section of concrete under each column with rebar tied to the existing slab, sized roughly four by four feet per column. That runs somewhere in the low four figures for both pads including saw cutting, rebar, and pour. Path two: step down to a lighter-duty lift that fits the existing slab. Most heavy-duty truck shops do not have that option because the vehicles will not shrink to fit the lift. So the pad is usually the answer. We coordinate with a local concrete contractor on your behalf, and we build the timing into the install schedule so the pad has twenty-eight days to cure before we drill.
Electrical: what your electrician will bill
A commercial 2 post car lift powerhead runs single-phase 240-volt or three-phase 208-volt at 20 to 30 amps. If your shop already has a subpanel with capacity, running conduit and a 30-amp disconnect within twelve feet of the lift location is a half-day job for a licensed electrician. Expect a mid-three-figure invoice for that scope in the Des Moines metro market. If you need a new subpanel or you are pulling three-phase from a service entrance that only has single-phase, the number moves up meaningfully — possibly into four figures — and you should have that conversation with your electrician before you commit to the lift.
Three-phase versus single-phase is not just a wiring question, it is a lift question. Three-phase powerheads lift faster and run cooler under continuous duty, which matters in a heavy-duty truck shop doing three or four gasket jobs per day. Single-phase works for lower-duty cycles. We ask what your daily cycle count looks like — how many lifts up and down in a shift — and we recommend accordingly. If you already have three-phase in the building, spec three-phase. If you do not and a converter or new service is prohibitive, single-phase is a reasonable choice for a truck shop that runs four to eight cycles per bay per day.
Install labor: what we charge and why
We install two-post lifts across central Iowa from our Ames warehouse. A standard install for a symmetric or asymmetric 2 post car lift in a shop with clear access, good slab, and electrical roughed in is a one-day job for a two-person crew. Our install labor for that scope is a mid-three-figure to low-four-figure line item depending on capacity, arm complexity, and travel distance. That includes uncrating, column setup, hydraulic connection, cable routing, anchor drilling and torque, initial cycle test with an empty test load, and technician orientation for the shop crew.
You can also install it yourself. Many heavy-duty truck shops have the tools and the mechanical skill to do it, and we support that path with phone consultation and torque specs specific to your model. What you save on install labor is what you spend in shop-time on the day of install — typically eight to ten labor-hours for two people. If your billing rate is above what our install crew charges, hire us. If your bay would otherwise sit idle and you have the tools, DIY is honest work. We do not push either direction. What we push is doing it right the first time so you do not re-anchor a column later.
Rebar, embedment, and the anchor decision
The concrete slab conversation gets granular when you drill. Anchors have a specified embedment depth — typically three-and-a-half to four-and-three-quarters inches for the wedge anchors used with a 12,000-pound 2 post car lift. That embedment has to bite into intact concrete, not the rubble at the bottom of a poor pour. If you hit rebar during drilling, you have to abandon the hole and drill a new one within the anchor pattern the manufacturer allows. Rebar hits happen roughly one hole in twenty in older Des Moines slabs.
Wet coring around a rebar strike is possible but adds time to the install day. We bring a rebar detector on every install to plan around the mat before we start drilling. That planning is why our installs finish in a day rather than a day and a half. When we run into a slab where the anchor pattern conflicts with rebar at every attempted location, we stop, call the shop owner, and walk through options — usually a chemical anchor set with epoxy in oversized holes, which the manufacturer approves for specific SKUs. That decision is made in the shop with the owner, not by phone. It is the sort of detail that separates a professional install from a hasty one.
First-year operating cost you should budget for
Once the lift is running, your first-year costs are small and predictable. Hydraulic oil top-off is a few gallons of AW32 or AW46, low three figures total. The annual ALI inspection is required by OSHA-referenced consensus standard and lands in the low three figures for us to perform on-site including a full torque check and cable inspection. Wear items in year one are essentially none unless something ships defective, which is a warranty conversation not an operating cost. That is the whole first-year invoice. It is small on purpose.
Year two through year six is where the operating cost curve stays flat: annual inspection, occasional cable end-fitting replacement if you catch a fray early, and a hydraulic hose swap somewhere in the middle of that window. Year seven through twelve is when we typically recommend a full cylinder seal rebuild and a fresh set of equalization cables, which is a mid-three-figure parts spend plus a half-day of labor. That is the entire life-cycle cost of a 2 post car lift in a working shop.
