Auto Home Lift Bay Layout: Two Ankeny Shop Configurations Compared

An auto home lift bay is only as productive as its layout, and two independent pro shops in Ankeny running the same lift model in different building configurations proved that in a single afternoon of side-by-side observation. One shop has the lift centered on a 24 foot deep bay with double doors at both ends. The other has the lift set 6 feet from the back wall of a 20 foot deep single-entry bay. The lifts are identical. The productivity on exhaust and driveline access work is not. Here is the side-by-side comparison we did with both owners.

Bay one: the drive-through 24 foot layout

Shop one has a 24 foot deep bay with roll-up doors on the front and back walls. The auto home lift sits centered in the bay, 12 feet from each door. Drive-through width is 108 inches between the column faces, and the doors are 12 feet wide clear. A tech can drive a truck in the front, lift it, complete an exhaust job, lower it, and roll it out the back without ever backing up. The workflow implication is that the shop can hold three vehicles in the lane behind the lift and process them in strict sequence. The floor is never crossed by a backing vehicle. Rolling toolboxes stage on both sides of the columns. For high-throughput exhaust and driveline work, the drive-through layout wins on time per vehicle by a measurable margin.

Bay two: the back-in 20 foot layout

Shop two has a 20 foot deep bay with a single roll-up door on the front. The auto home lift sits 6 feet from the back wall, meaning a full-size pickup has to be backed in from the front door to be centered on the lift. The rear clearance behind the truck bumper is roughly 2 to 3 feet at the wall. There is enough room for the tech to work behind the bed, but a rolling toolbox does not fit in that gap. The tech either walks the tool around the columns to the front or crab-walks the toolbox alongside the truck to the back. This adds several minutes per exhaust job and is genuinely frustrating on driveline work that requires multiple trips to the toolbox. The layout works, but it is slower than the drive-through by a noticeable margin on the same job.

What the column centers do to your workflow

Both shops chose the standard 141 inch column-to-column centers, which is the North American default for a 10K asymmetric auto home lift. That dimension is what gives you 108 inches of drive-through width. If you tighten the columns to 132 inches for a smaller building, you lose about 9 inches of drive-through, and a full-size pickup mirror starts brushing the column. If you widen the columns to 148 inches for extra clearance, you gain the drive-through but your arms have to reach further to pick up the pinch weld points, and the arm-restraint mechanism engages closer to the extended limit. Neither extreme is wrong for the right application, but the 141 inch standard is the default for a reason. Both Ankeny shops kept it. Both were right to.

Overhead lines and the difference at full lift height

Above the auto home lift, both shops routed shop air, electric, and drop lights differently. Shop one has a soft loom drop from the ceiling over the middle of the bay, keeping the hoses out of the driver’s path when the truck is on the ground. Shop two has hard-piped shop air run along the back wall with a coil drop from the wall to the tech. At full lift height, the shop two setup means the coil has to be pulled forward under the raised vehicle to reach the tech, and it periodically snags on a diff cover or trailer hitch. Small annoyance. Adds seconds per pull. Over a year it adds real minutes of unproductive time. This is not the lift’s fault; this is bay layout, and it is what we get called in to consult on when a shop realizes they built the space around the lift instead of designing the whole bay together.

Slab loading and column anchor location

Anchor placement for both Ankeny installs used the same eight-anchor per column pattern into a 4.25 inch minimum slab of 3000 PSI concrete. Shop one poured a new slab when the building was built and got exactly what they wanted: 6 inches of 4000 PSI with rebar mat, no expansion joints under either column footprint. Shop two retrofit into an older slab and had to add reinforced anchor pads at each column location because the original slab was only 3.5 inches. Both are structurally fine now. But the shop two retrofit cost time, and the pours had to cure before the auto home lift could be set. If you are building or renovating a shop bay, pour for the lift before you talk about tile or paint.

Exhaust and driveline work: what actually decides speed

Both Ankeny shops do heavy exhaust and driveline access work, and when we timed a comparable job on each lift, the drive-through bay came in about 15 percent faster on a full exhaust replacement. The lift is the same. The tech is the same tier. The tools are the same. The layout is what moved the number. If you are choosing an auto home lift for a shop that will run exhaust and driveline work as a core service, spend as much time on the bay drawing as you do on the lift model. The lift is a two-day install decision. The bay layout is a decade-long productivity decision. We help with both when you buy from us; we cannot help with just the lift and hope the bay works out.

How to lay out your own bay

Start with the drawing before you order the auto home lift. Mark the column centers 141 inches apart. Draw the vehicle envelope: 20 feet long by 7 feet wide for a full-size pickup. Add 3 feet of tech-and-toolbox space at the front and 3 feet at the back. That gives you a 26 foot minimum bay depth for comfortable single-entry work. Anything shorter forces the compromises we saw at shop two. If you have a drive-through option, use it.
