For a collector who wants one vehicle stored up top and a daily driver parked underneath, a 4-post is almost always the right call over a 2-post. A 4-post holds the car on its tires, not its frame, so nothing sags sitting for months at a time. Casters let you roll the whole rig sideways when the neighbor drops by. In this build, the 30×40 pole barn gave us roughly twelve feet of clear side wall, enough for a 7,000 lb 4-post to lift a mid-size sedan or 6th-gen Camaro out of the way of the driver’s-side lower vehicle. We spec’d the auto lift with drip trays, a jack tray for occasional wheel work, and an option pad for a rolling bridge jack in year two. Wiring the 220V Circuit Before Install Day
The single most common question on a home auto lift install is whether the owner needs 220V. For most 4-post storage models, the answer is no. Many run cleanly off a 110V/15A circuit. The model he chose was 110V-friendly, but a 30-amp 220V circuit was cheaper to add the same day his electrician was already in the barn for the compressor. Doing it once, on day one, before the slab looks lived-in, saves a second service call and often a permit trip. He landed on 220V, and that same circuit later fed a tire machine and an MIG welder. If you are building an auto lift bay from scratch, run the heavier circuit even if this year’s lift does not need it.
First-Year Service: CV Axle Replacements Underneath
Around seven months in, his daily driver started clicking on hard right turns. He rolled the storage 4-post to its stow position, drove the daily underneath, raised the runways just enough to clear an axle out, and did his first inner and outer CV boot replacement over a Saturday. Second, he added a hydraulic bridge jack on the runways for tire and brake work at month ten. It is the smallest upcharge in the entire quote and it changes what the shop can actually do on year-one weekends.
Concrete Slab Realities in a 30×40 Pole Barn
His slab was four inches of 3,500 PSI concrete, poured over a proper base, no rebar mat, no post-tensioning. That is the floor of what any home lift manufacturer requires. Some commercial 2-post units ask for 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI, and heavy-duty 30K units want six inches. A storage 4-post spreads its load across four column footprints, so it is much more forgiving than a 2-post. Even so, we ask every customer to send us a photo of the slab and, if possible, the pour spec from the builder. We would rather cancel a delivery than watch anchors pull out of thin concrete. Ongoing Support After Year One
Twelve months in, the lift went through its first annual inspection: cable tension, latch drop test, safety-bar function, cylinder seal check, and a bolt torque pass on all four columns. He did most of it himself using the checklist we send with every install. We shipped him a replacement latch spring the following week when he flagged that one had lost tension. That pattern is what we prefer with home collectors: teach it, stock it, answer the phone. He has already asked about a second auto lift for a planned shop expansion.
