A Davenport dealership service manager asked us to size an auto lift for two bays that had to handle daily service, overnight loaner storage, and seasonal trade-in parking. The variables were not obvious from a spec sheet. Ceiling height, overhead door swing, column offset, and stack-park layout all needed to line up before we finalized the model. What Davenport Dealership Bays Demand From an Auto Lift

A dealership service bay is a very different environment than a home shop or a general repair floor. Vehicles cycle in and out on a schedule, techs work under multiple lifts inside the same shift, and the parts truck is showing up while a customer is standing at the write-up counter. That combination means an auto lift in a dealership bay has to raise fast, latch reliably, and get out of the way when a car needs to go straight up on the rack and straight back out. We steered him toward asymmetric-column 2-post lifts with a 10,000 to 12,000 lb rating, direct-drive arms, and a low pad reach for the modern crossovers dominating his trade-in queue. Anything over 12K would waste ceiling and column footprint on cars that never come close to the rating.

Ceiling Height Math for Column Placement

Every 2-post auto lift has three heights the drawing needs to reconcile. Overall column height, overhead-shutoff bar height, and maximum lifting height. His bays measured fourteen feet from finished floor to the underside of the steel purlin. That was enough for a standard-tall column, roughly 145 inches, plus the overhead-crossbar clearance a technician needs to raise a full-size pickup. Ten-foot bays would have forced us to a floorplate design with an equalizer bar across the floor, which changes how technicians walk between bays and where the transmission jack rolls. Always measure to the lowest overhead object, not the ridge. Lights, sprinkler heads, and HVAC drops decide the ceiling number, not the roof.

Overhead Door Swing and Rolling Traffic

The subtle one on a dealership install is the overhead door. Sectional doors curl back into the bay along a horizontal track roughly nine inches below the ceiling. If your auto lift column sits closer to the door than the horizontal track allows, the top panel eats into the safety-arm zone every time it opens. We measured his existing door tracks and offset the driver-side column another eighteen inches into the bay. That preserved a full-width door opening, kept the overhead-shutoff bar clear of the top panel, and left enough room for a full-size pickup to roll straight in without a jog. Door interference is the single most common redo we see on dealership installs that were not walked in person.

Storing Winter Trades and Loaners Off-Season

Half the reason a dealership calls about additional lift capacity is not day-to-day service. It is seasonal storage. Winter tires roll into the lot in November, snowplows finish clearing an aisle by December, and by January the used-car manager is looking for anywhere to stack a dozen extra trades. A 2-post can hold a car overnight for storage, but a bare 2-post cannot stack vehicles. When the storage need is real, we usually add one or two 4-post units off the main service aisle. He picked a mid-rise 4-post for the back corner. That took eight loaner units off the outdoor lot from December through March.

Symmetric vs Asymmetric When You Rotate Vehicles Fast

Asymmetric arms let the driver open the door after the vehicle is spotted on the lift. In a dealership context, techs also need to reach the driver’s-side door mid-service to pull codes, seat belts, and delivery paperwork. That points hard toward asymmetric on every service bay he was outfitting. Symmetric columns still make sense for heavy trucks and vans over 8,000 lb curb, where centering the load matters more than door swing. In his shop, one bay went asymmetric for the daily rotation and one went symmetric-capable for the fleet contract. Splitting the two auto lift configurations across two bays is a pattern we recommend anywhere volume and truck work share a shop floor.

Power Requirements at 208V vs 240V Three-Phase

His building had 208V three-phase available at the panel. That is common in commercial construction across eastern Iowa. Most 2-post lifts are dual-voltage, but the power unit must be spec’d for the correct voltage at order time, and 208V motors move slightly slower than 240V motors under load. We flagged the difference for his purchasing department so the invoice matched the panel, not a generic single-phase quote. Getting the voltage right on the initial order avoids a two-week motor swap after install day. We also confirmed the breaker and wire gauge from the panel to the bay so his electrician did not need to re-pull wire.

Service and Warranty Response in Eastern Iowa

Davenport is roughly three hours from our shop in Ames, straight across I-80. We treat that as a normal service radius. Warranty response, factory-authorized inspection, and parts turnaround all run through us instead of a distant regional distributor. When a hydraulic hose weeps at eighteen months, we ship a replacement out of our own inventory the same day he calls.
