Myth: Arm Restraints Are Optional If You’re Careful
Every arm restraint on a modern two-post auto lift exists because a vehicle moved during service. Restraints are not a suggestion — they are a load-bearing safety component. The claim we hear from experienced techs is that a properly-set adapter under the pinch weld will not shift. Sometimes true. But under lateral load — pulling on a stuck bolt, torquing a subframe fastener — the arm can walk. Restraints are the difference between a controlled service and a vehicle sliding off the pads. We teach every tech to check restraint engagement audibly and visually every time an arm is repositioned. It takes two seconds. Every ALI-certified inspection includes it. Myth: Safety Cams Only Matter During the Lift
The safety cam — the locking mechanism that catches the carriage at set intervals — is often thought of as an up-cycle feature. It is not. The cam is what holds the vehicle in place while you work. Every up cycle should end with a deliberate lower onto the locks: raise past the working height, then release the hydraulic and settle onto the mechanical cam. That transfer takes the weight off the hydraulic system and puts it onto steel. Working with the vehicle still on hydraulic pressure means one hose failure away from a drop. Every auto lift service session should be on the locks, not on the hydraulic. Full stop. This is the single rule the industry keeps repeating because techs keep skipping it.
Myth: Old Restraints Are Fine If They Still Click
A restraint that clicks is not automatically a restraint that holds. The click is the ratchet engaging; the hold is a spring, a pin, and a pawl doing their jobs together. Springs weaken. Pins wear. Pawls develop play. We inspected one of their older arms and found a restraint that clicked crisply but had lost enough spring tension that a moderate lateral pull disengaged it. Cheap fix — replacement kits run mid-two-figure numbers per arm. But nobody would have caught it without a hands-on inspection. Any auto lift over about seven years old should have its restraint kits inspected annually and rebuilt or replaced as part of preventive maintenance, not as a reaction to a problem.
Myth: All Auto Lift Safety Locks Engage the Same Way
Not even close. Different manufacturers use different lock designs — bar-and-latch, sliding pin, roller-cam, gravity pawl — and each has its own engagement sound and reset procedure. A tech who trained on a Rotary and moves to a Challenger will hear a different lock click and may miss the confirmation. We walked their new hires through both lock styles on the shop floor. The difference is not academic; if you cannot audibly confirm engagement, you cannot confirm the lift is on the locks. Every auto lift in the shop should have a laminated sheet nearby showing the exact engagement sound and visual for that specific model, so a new tech is never guessing.
Myth: State Inspections Don’t Check Your Lift Certs
State-specific inspection programs vary, but if you are running annual vehicle safety inspections as a licensed inspection station, the state does care about the equipment you are inspecting on. In some states that means an ALI Gold Label sticker on the auto lift and an annual documented inspection by a certified inspector. In others it means proof of preventive maintenance. Either way, the sticker on the column and the paperwork in the file matter. When their state auditor rolled through nine months later, the shop passed on the first walk because they had the documentation ready in a binder at the front counter.
