A municipal fleet manager in the Iowa-Illinois corridor called us about an auto lift refresh for their public-works shop — a dozen bays, mixed vehicles from ATVs to Class 6 trucks, and a new hire pool that leaned young. They asked us to walk the site with them and treat the project as a safety-first buildout, not a spec-sheet exercise. Concrete Depth and Anchor Testing First
The very first thing we did on their walk was measure concrete depth with a rebar detector and pull a small core sample from an unused corner. Their shop was poured thirty years ago on a slab that ran between four and five inches — good news. We pull-tested anchor sites on two representative bays with a calibrated tester and confirmed both hit the 3,000 PSI minimum. Any municipal auto lift install starts with the concrete number in writing, not in memory, because the state fleet inspector will ask. Skipping this test in a public shop is not an option. If your concrete does not test, you either core-drill and epoxy, saw-cut and repour, or you move the lift bay to a different location on the slab.
Bay Spacing and Traffic Flow for Fleet Work
Fleet bays live and die by traffic flow. Their shop had a pull-through layout that let trucks enter from one side and exit the other without backing. We spec’d two-post lifts on twelve-foot bay centers with clear thirty-inch walk zones around each. A tech should never have to squeeze past a raised vehicle to reach a tool cart. In a fleet shop with multiple techs working simultaneously, that spacing is safety. It also determines how many bays actually fit — cramming five two-posts into a space that fits four cleanly is how injuries happen and how state inspectors write notes. Bay spacing is a spec question, not an opinion or a preference.
Column Height for Suspension Repairs
Suspension and shock work drives column height on fleet auto lift purchases. When a tech is under a raised truck removing a control arm or pressing a ball joint, the truck body needs to be at chest height for the work to be comfortable. On a full-size municipal pickup that means a column rise of about six and a half feet under the frame — standard columns cover it. On a Class 6 truck with a taller frame, extended-height columns become necessary. We spec’d standard columns on the light-duty bays and extended on the two heavy bays. The mistake we see in fleet shops is buying all standard columns and then trying to work bent-over under the heavy vehicles for the next fifteen years.
Mobile Column vs Two-Post for a Municipal Fleet
Not everything in a municipal fleet fits on a two-post. Fire apparatus, dump trucks, snow plows — some vehicles need a mobile column set that lifts by the wheels. We spec’d a set of four Rotary wireless mobile columns for the heavy bay in addition to the two-post lifts in the light bays. Mobile columns are more expensive per set, but they give you flexibility a two-post cannot. You can lift a school bus, a fire truck, or a road grader on the same set of columns. For municipal fleets running mixed heavy and light vehicles, a mobile column set plus two-post lifts covers everything. Each auto lift type earns its place in the shop for different work, and neither replaces the other.
Wiring, Air, and the Fluid Reels Nobody Plans For
Municipal shops need overhead fluid reels — oil, ATF, coolant, washer fluid, air — dropping over every bay. That plumbing is planned before lift install, not after. Wiring runs need to reach lift columns without stringing extension cords. Compressed air needs to reach every bay with enough CFM to run impact wrenches at multiple stations simultaneously. We reviewed their utility plan bay by bay and flagged three drops that needed to be moved before install. Fleet inspectors will not fail you for missing reels, but they will note a shop that is not set up for efficient work, and that impacts your operating budget conversation come next spring.
Training That Isn’t Optional
The new-hire pool at their shop turned over more than they liked, and we recommended two things. First, every new tech runs through a documented auto lift safety course during onboarding — a two-hour walkthrough on each lift type in the shop, with sign-off. Second, they refresh the training annually for every tech regardless of tenure. That documentation matters when an incident happens; a fleet manager who can produce training records for every operator has a substantially different insurance conversation than one who cannot. It is not paperwork for its own sake. It is protection for the operator, the vehicle, and the manager’s own signature.
Signing Off on the Finished Auto Lift Bay
Their final signoff checklist was a laminated one-pager on each column: model, serial, install date, ALI Gold Label sticker, annual inspection date, and the operator training log.
