Auto lift freight is the invisible piece of the purchase decision. A body shop foreman near the Iowa-Missouri border can pick the perfect two-post for CV axle and half-shaft work and still lose a day of production if the crate arrives without a plan. This buyer’s guide is the piece we walk border-shop customers through so freight day looks like a fifteen-minute exercise instead of a three-hour scramble. If you have never received a lift before, this is the part nobody tells you until it is too late.

How a lift actually ships
A two-post auto lift ships on a wooden pallet or in a shipping crate. Two columns strapped together, a pallet of arms and hardware, a crate for the hydraulic power unit and hoses. On an LTL common carrier, that pallet weighs between 1,200 and 1,800 pounds. That is more than a floor jack can move, more than four techs can lift, and more than a hand pallet jack can safely negotiate across a shop floor. Border shops on the Iowa-Missouri line get delivered by common carriers that do not typically bring a lift gate as a default. We flag lift-gate service on your order if the shop does not have a dock or a forklift. Missing that check is the number one freight-day problem we see.
The forklift question
A four-thousand-pound forklift will handle a two-post pallet with no drama. A three-thousand-pound forklift can handle it if the forks reach far enough under the pallet and the load is centered. If your shop does not own a forklift, the next question is whether the delivery driver will drop the pallet in your parking lot with a lift gate and let you handle the last thirty feet with a pallet jack. That works if the floor is flat and dry. It does not work if there is a lip at the shop door or a slope in the parking lot. Auto lift crates are top-heavy and unforgiving on uneven ground. We ask border-shop foremen for a photo of the delivery approach before we book the freight, and we adjust the delivery type accordingly.
Tailgate delivery, curbside, and inside
Three tiers of delivery service. Curbside is the default; the truck stops on the road, the driver rolls the pallet off with a lift gate, and the pallet lives wherever it lands. Tailgate is essentially the same on most trucks; the driver is not obligated to move the pallet more than a few feet. Inside delivery is a paid upgrade where the driver is contracted to bring the pallet inside the shop door. For body shops that do not own a forklift, inside delivery is almost always worth the added cost. It is the difference between the pallet sitting in the December mud for two days waiting on a rental forklift and the pallet sitting in your bay under the roof. We quote inside delivery when the shop asks for it.
Iowa-Missouri border logistics
Border shops sit in a routing zone where some carriers cross the state line more cheaply than others. That matters. We work with multiple LTL carriers and choose the one that hits the shop’s zip code most efficiently. We also flag that some carriers treat the border as a terminal boundary, which can add a day or two to transit time versus a route that stays in Iowa. If freight time is critical because a customer vehicle is scheduled into a new bay, tell us on the quote and we plan around it. We can also stage a lift at our Ames warehouse and deliver it on our own truck if the foreman prefers a single point of contact for the whole install. That option costs more, and it is worth it for some shops.
Inspecting the freight before you sign
Never sign a freight receipt without inspecting the pallet. The receipt is the shop’s only lever if something arrived broken. If a corner of the crate is smashed, note it on the receipt. If a column is dented, note it. If the pallet is missing a box, note it and refuse that portion of the delivery. Signing clean and calling us later is much harder to resolve than noting damage at the moment of delivery. LTL claims work on the paper trail. This is not paranoia; it is standard freight practice, and we have seen the difference between the two outcomes on the same auto lift on the same week. The rental forklift back-up plan
If the shop cannot borrow a forklift for delivery day, a half-day rental from a local equipment yard is the fallback. Border-shop foremen tell us this is a $100 to $200 line item depending on the yard, and it saves a day of production. Book the rental for the delivery window plus two hours. Have the rental on-site before the truck arrives. Move the pallet directly into the bay where the lift will live. Do not move it into a staging area and then move it again; every extra move is a chance to damage a column. Auto lift columns are surprisingly easy to scratch and surprisingly annoying to touch up.
From pallet to install day
Once the pallet is in the bay, it can sit safely for up to a week before we install. We ship stretch-wrapped and covered. Do not unbox until we arrive. Unboxed columns are easier to lose hardware from, and lost hardware means an install-day delay. If the shop wants to unpack for space reasons, take photos of every bag and label them. When our installer arrives, we handle the assembly, the anchor drilling, the hydraulic plumbing, and the pressure test. A border-shop CV bay install is usually a same-day job.
