Auto lift installations for municipal fleet inspection bays in Cedar Falls have to clear a bar that a small-shop install does not. The building is public property. The inspections it runs are the annual state inspections on trucks that carry other people’s kids to school and other people’s water to their homes. Ceiling height and door swing are safety questions before they are convenience questions. Ceiling height is not just the drywall

Fleet managers usually quote us the ceiling height as measured to the drywall. That is not the number we use. The number we use is the lowest obstruction between the truck roof and the roof deck. HVAC ducts, sprinkler mains, conduit trays, hanging light fixtures, exhaust extraction reels. All of those are usually a foot or more below the drywall, and any one of them can be the choke point when a vehicle lifts on the auto lift. We ask fleet managers to send us a photo of the ceiling looking straight up from where the lift will sit, plus a tape measurement to the lowest thing hanging within the vehicle footprint. That is the working ceiling. That is the number we design against.

Fleet vehicles are taller than you remember

A tandem-axle dump truck rides tall to begin with. A school bus is taller. A cargo van with a light bar and a rooftop unit is taller than a stock cargo van. Fleet inspection bays in Cedar Falls that were designed for a 1990s pickup fleet are often too low for a 2020s cargo van with a rooftop mounted electrical unit or a snowplow-equipped municipal pickup. When we quote an auto lift for a fleet bay, we ask the fleet manager for the tallest vehicle in the current inventory plus the tallest vehicle they expect to buy in the next five years. Then we add the lift rise. If the sum is more than the working ceiling, we look at a different lift, a taller ceiling, or a different bay.

Door swing and the door opening

The overhead door opening is often the actual clearance limiter, not the ceiling. A door opening ten feet tall in a Cedar Falls municipal shop lets in a nine-and-a-half-foot vehicle with almost no margin. Then the vehicle drives in and lifts to a work height. If the work height puts the roof above the door opening, that vehicle cannot be lowered and driven out without lowering the lift first. That may sound obvious. It is not, until you watch a fleet tech realize they have to lower the vehicle every time they want a coffee. Door swing on a personnel door in the bay is a smaller point but still worth noting. A door that swings into the arms of a two-post lift is a lifetime of dents and dings.

Working clearances above and around the vehicle

State inspections often involve underhood work as much as underbody. A lift bay for inspections needs room to open the hood at full lift height without hitting a light fixture or a ductwork run. Around the sides, the tech needs room to move a creeper, a fluid drain, and an inspection cart without threading around the columns. We spec fleet bays with a minimum of four feet of clearance around all sides of the lifted vehicle. That is a nice-to-have on a private shop. On a fleet inspection bay, it is a safety and productivity floor. Tight bays cause techs to work in awkward postures, and awkward postures cause injuries in commercial fleets more than the lift itself ever does.

Working under a bus or a tall truck

A bus or a tandem-axle truck on an auto lift needs mobile columns most of the time, not a fixed two-post or four-post. Cedar Falls municipal fleets running a mix of pickups and larger vehicles usually get a two-lift setup: a fixed lift for the pickup and light truck side, mobile columns for the bus, ambulance, and heavy chassis side. Trying to put a heavy chassis on a lift that is not rated for it is the shortest path to a bad outcome. We do the math on the fleet inventory before we recommend a configuration. Emergency egress and code compliance

Municipal buildings answer to code in a way a private garage does not. Emergency egress paths cannot be blocked by a lifted vehicle. Fire suppression coverage must reach the whole bay, including under a lifted vehicle. Electrical disconnects for the auto lift pump must be reachable without stepping under a lifted load. When we install into a Cedar Falls municipal building, we coordinate with the fleet manager and often with the building code officer to confirm all of that before we anchor. The paperwork is more than a private shop deals with, and that is fine. It is the right thing for a public building.
