A tire-and-alignment shop owner in Ames called us on a Tuesday morning: his auto lift had a hydraulic seep at the passenger-side cylinder, and he had a full board of CV axle and half-shaft jobs stacked up for the week. He wanted to know whether to shut down the lift, keep working, or attempt a seal rebuild that night. The answer, like most lift questions, hinged on the specific model, the exact drip rate, and the load path during a CV axle pull. This is the safety-first walkthrough we ran through with him on that call, start to finish.

Diagnose the seep before you touch a wrench
Not every wet cylinder needs a rebuild. On an auto lift, three things can look like a cylinder leak and be something else: a hydraulic hose seep at the fitting, a return-line drip at the manifold, and condensation on the cylinder body from a cold shop with warm hydraulic fluid. Our Ames customer had a real seep — the rod-seal was passing a small amount of fluid past the wiper every time the lift dropped from full rise. We had him wipe the rod, run the lift full up and full down twice, and check again. The rod was wet after the second cycle. That confirmed it. If your cylinder is dry after a controlled cycle test, do not tear it apart — check the hoses and fittings first.
Load off before anything comes apart
Rule one on any auto lift cylinder work: the vehicle is off the arms, the arms are stowed, the mechanical safety locks are engaged at the lowest lock position, and the hydraulic line is depressurized. Do not skip any step. Our Ames shop owner had a Silverado on the lift when he called, and the first thing we told him was to finish the axle job, drop the truck, and clear the bay before we talked about any rebuild. Cylinder work with a load overhead is one of the two ways lifts kill people (the other is cable failure). Never chase a seep with a car in the air, and never trust a partially seeping cylinder to hold that same car past the day you notice the drip.
Cylinder removal: what breaks and what should not
Pulling a cylinder off a two-post auto lift is a two-hour job if it goes smoothly. Disconnect the hydraulic line at the base fitting with a catch pan below. Free the top pivot pin — usually a snap-ring and a slide-out — and lower the cylinder rod to the working position. Free the bottom pivot pin. The whole cylinder comes out the front or the side, depending on the model. Where jobs go bad is the pivot pins seizing in place from years of dry service. Our Ames customer soaked both pins with a good penetrant the night before and drove them out with a brass drift the next morning. Seal-kit matching: what to look up before you order
Every auto lift cylinder has three seals we care about: the rod seal, the piston seal, and the wiper. Some kits also include a static o-ring at the gland nut and a backup ring. We stock kits by model number, not brand, because two lifts with the same brand can use different cylinders depending on the production year. Our Ames customer read the model tag on the base of the column, we cross-referenced the kit, and shipped from stock the same day. If you cannot find the model tag, take a picture of the cylinder rod, the gland-nut wrench flats, and the base fitting, and send it to us. We can usually match the kit from photos in under an hour. Ordering the wrong kit costs you a week and a restock fee.
Rebuild bench work: clean, inspect, reassemble
The rebuild itself is straightforward if the bench is clean. Unthread the gland nut, slide the rod out with the piston attached, remove the old seals with a plastic pick (never a screwdriver), and inspect the rod for pitting or scoring. Any rod with a fingernail-catch pit gets replaced, not resealed — a scored rod eats a new seal in a week. Our Ames rod was clean. Install new seals with plenty of clean hydraulic fluid and a seal-installation cone to avoid nicking a rod-seal lip on the piston threads. Torque the gland nut to spec, not to feel. Reinstall in reverse. He was back running CV axle jobs on the same auto lift by the next morning, with the drip pan clean.
Reinstall and bleed: the step nobody documents
After the cylinder is back in place, the auto lift will not lift correctly until it is bled. Air trapped in the cylinder makes the lift stutter and rise slowly. Standard bleed: run the lift to full rise without a load, hold it there for thirty seconds, and drop it fully. Repeat three times. Air burps out the return line back to the reservoir. Check hydraulic level after each cycle and top off. Our Ames customer ran the bleed sequence, checked for drips at every fitting he had touched, and shoved on each arm with the lift at working height. Everything checked out. He put a Camry on it that same afternoon for a CV axle job, and the lift held rock-solid through the pull.
When to rebuild versus replace the whole cylinder
A seal rebuild works when the rod is clean and the barrel is sound. Rebuild fails when the rod is pitted, the barrel is scored, or the base weld is cracked. We tell customers to replace the whole cylinder rather than reseal a bad one, because a resealed cylinder with a scored rod leaks again in months and you lose the rebuild labor twice. Our Ames auto lift needed only a seal kit and he is still running it a year later with no drip. If the drip returns within six months of a rebuild, call us — we will replace the cylinder and credit the kit. Fair is fair, and a shop cannot afford to fight the same lift twice.
