An independent professional shop owner in Dubuque asked us to help him compare two auto lift configurations he was considering for a bay expansion. He runs a busy general repair shop with a heavy percentage of wheel bearing, brake, and steering work — the kind of shop where every vehicle that comes in gets its wheels off at some point during the visit. He was looking at two very different platforms and wanted a real side-by-side breakdown before committing. We walked him through both, and this article is that comparison written up for the next shop owner facing the same choice.

The Shop and the Job Mix
The Dubuque shop runs three bays currently, all two-post lifts, all in the 10,000-pound class, mostly six to eight years old. The owner does mostly domestic and Japanese passenger cars and light trucks, with some Euro thrown in when the customers ask. Wheel bearings, brakes, and steering work make up a huge chunk of his labor, driven partly by the local road conditions — Dubuque has enough hills, enough salt, and enough gravel that bearings and brakes wear faster than a flatland market.
He was adding a fourth bay to handle overflow and specifically wanted to speed up the wheel-off workflow that dominates his shop’s day. His two candidate configurations were, first, another standard 10,000-pound two-post overhead symmetric lift matching what he already ran, and second, a 12,000-pound asymmetric two-post overhead. Both are commercial-grade ALI Gold platforms. Both would install cleanly in the new bay. The question was which one would actually make the fourth bay more productive than a duplicate of the existing three. That is exactly the kind of side-by-side we like getting called about, because the wrong choice is not dangerous, but it is slow and expensive over a fifteen-year service life.
Configuration A: 10,000 lb Symmetric Overhead
The straightforward option was another 10,000-pound symmetric overhead auto lift matching the shop’s existing three bays. The advantages of matching what you already have are real: your techs already know how to spot vehicles on it, your parts inventory (arm pads, pad extensions, adapters) already fits it, and your workflow does not need to be adjusted for the new bay. Continuity has value in a busy shop, and duplicating a proven platform reduces risk.
The disadvantages are equally real, though. A fourth identical lift does not add new capability, it just adds capacity. If the existing three lifts are already handling the wheel-off work well, that is fine. But if there is a bottleneck in the current workflow — a specific job type that is slower than it should be — a duplicate lift does not solve that problem. In this shop’s case, we asked the owner where the actual bottleneck was in wheel-off work. His answer was that arm adjustment for varied wheelbase vehicles was taking too long, and that door-open room around the vehicle was tight in the existing bays. Neither of those is fixed by adding a fourth identical lift.
Configuration B: 12,000 lb Asymmetric Overhead
Option B was a 12,000-pound asymmetric two-post overhead. The 12,000-pound capacity gives real headroom for the growing truck weight in his customer mix — more three-quarter-tons, more full-size SUVs, more crew-cab pickups than he was seeing five years ago. The asymmetric arm geometry rotates the vehicle slightly rearward on the columns and gives significantly more door-open clearance in front. For a shop where techs are constantly in and out of the driver’s seat — grabbing keys, starting the vehicle for brake tests, running scanners — that is a real ergonomic upgrade.
The 12,000-pound rating also means the lift is not near its capacity limit on any vehicle he sees, which reduces long-term wear on cables, cylinders, and locks. Asymmetric arms have their own spot-training curve, and a tech used to symmetric spotting has to relearn a few habits, but the curve is short. For a fourth bay dedicated to the heaviest and door-heaviest vehicles in his mix, the 12,000-pound asymmetric was a clear upgrade over another matching lift. It solves the bottleneck he actually named — door swing and truck weight — rather than just adding more of what he already had.
Installation Prep and the Site Survey
Whichever configuration he picked, the install prep for the new bay was going to be similar. We did a site survey a week before the order to make sure the fourth-bay slab, ceiling, and electrical were ready. Slab in his shop was six inches at 4,000 PSI across the whole footprint, poured in 2018 as part of a building expansion. Ceiling was fifteen feet clear at the peak with the lowest overhead obstruction at thirteen-and-a-half feet clear — plenty of vertical room for either overhead configuration.
Electrical was the one thing that needed work. His existing three bays each had their own dedicated 220-volt 30-amp circuit, but the new fourth bay had only a 110-volt convenience outlet run for shop lighting. His electrician priced a new dedicated circuit and disconnect box at a modest number, and that got scheduled ahead of our install date. Site surveys are how we catch this stuff before it becomes a problem. A shop owner assuming the fourth bay was electrically ready would have found out on install day that it was not, and we would have been sitting on our hands waiting for an electrician. Site survey first, order second, install third — that sequence is how we prefer to work with commercial shops.
The Owner’s Decision and the Reasoning Behind It
He picked the 12,000-pound asymmetric. The specific reasoning was that his fourth bay would become the dedicated bay for heavy trucks and door-heavy vehicles, taking the pressure off his existing three bays and letting the whole shop run more efficiently. The extra $1,000-ish (rough range) in acquisition cost was easy to justify against the fifteen-year service life of the platform and the workflow improvement on the specific job types that had been slowing him down.
The install ran clean. Freight from our Ames warehouse to Dubuque was two business days. Install crew went out the following Monday, completed the columns, cables, hydraulics, and safety cycle testing in a single day, and the shop was running four bays by that Tuesday morning. The fourth bay saw its first real work — a set of wheel bearings on a three-quarter-ton diesel — that same afternoon, and the tech reported back that the door-open room was noticeably better than in the older bays. That is the kind of outcome you get when the configuration choice actually solves the workflow problem you named.
Parts Availability: The Long-Term Angle
One question the owner asked during the comparison was about long-term parts availability. His existing three lifts were from a manufacturer that had been stable for years, and he was rightly cautious about introducing a fourth lift with a different parts pipeline.
