An overlanding builder in the Des Moines metro called us last fall about auto lifts for home garage work in a three-stall attached garage where the third stall was going to become his build bay. He runs a 4Runner, a Tacoma, and a friend’s 80-series Land Cruiser through the shop, and daily maintenance was eating his weekends. This is the full walk-through of that install, the choices we made together, and how the finished bay looks nine months later. The starting condition: three-stall garage, one bay to spare

The garage was already built and finished: 9-foot ceilings in the two side stalls, 10-foot ceiling in the third stall because it sits under a bonus room with a step-up floor. Slab was builder-standard 4-inch, no rebar visible where the anchor point was going to land. He wanted auto lifts for home garage service and light suspension work, not car storage, so ceiling constraints ruled but he did not need the extra headroom a four-post storage rig demands. The 4Runner and Tacoma both come in around 4,700 to 5,200 lb loaded with roof racks, and the friend’s 80-series is closer to 6,200 lb. We wrote max vehicle weight at 7,000 lb rated, but sized the lift to 9,000 lb for margin. He also wanted to keep the door opening usable so his wife’s SUV could still park in the middle stall while he was building. Every constraint above shaped the recommendation.

Why we ruled out a scissor and landed on a two-post

He asked about a scissor first, because a friend of his has one and told him it is more expensive for no reason. That is a common opinion and it is not entirely wrong for auto lifts for home garage use. A mid-rise scissor is genuinely nice for tire and brake work, but for the exhaust hangers, skid plates, and rocker slider work an overlander does most weekends, a two-post gives you real standing room under the vehicle. It is also cheaper for the working height you get, in dollars per inch of clearance. The trade-off is ceiling: a scissor works under a 9-foot ceiling, a two-post really wants 11 to 12. The bonus-room stall got him to 10, and we found a low-ceiling variant of a common two-post that trims the columns by about 8 inches with a slightly reduced maximum lift height. He gave up about 6 inches of overhead work clearance and got a real two-post in a 10-foot bay.

The concrete conversation and what we actually did

Auto lifts for home garage installs on a builder-standard 4-inch slab are workable if the concrete is 3,000 PSI or better and there is no vapor barrier issue. We drilled a small test bore in a corner of the bay before install day and confirmed the pour was consistent. On a marginal slab we sometimes recommend a saw-cut and re-pour of a 6-inch pad in a 5×5 area under each column, but this one was solid. We used long anchor bolts and torqued to the manufacturer spec, then re-torqued after the first week of use. Nine months in, no movement, no cracking around the anchors. If your slab is questionable and you are already planning to do concrete work, add reinforced pads under each column now. If it looks decent, a bore sample is $80 well spent before you assume the worst. Do not assume, and do not just eyeball it and hope.

Bay layout and workflow: locks every two inches matters

One thing the overlander learned during the first month is why the two-post’s lock intervals matter for real work. Rotary and Challenger two-posts click into locking positions every two to two-and-a-half inches of travel, which means you can set the vehicle at the exact working height for a specific job rather than fighting an all-the-way-up or all-the-way-down choice. For overlanding work, that means shocks and lower control arms get one height, tire rotation gets another, exhaust and skid plates get a third. He set the third stall up with a rolling tool cabinet parked against one wall, an air line drop at the front column, and a floor drain in the corner. Total floor-to-wall clearance around the lift is about 30 inches on each side, which is enough to walk the arms around the vehicle without scooting the tool cart every time. Small workflow decisions like that compound over the first six months.

Exhaust hangers, skid plates, and the driveline stuff he does most

Overlanders beat on exhaust and driveline access more than anyone realizes. Skid plates need to come off almost weekly during a build, transfer case skids weigh 40 to 60 pounds and are awkward to hold overhead, and rear driveshaft angles get checked whenever the truck gets a lift kit or new springs. On the two-post at working height, all of that goes from a floor-jack-and-swearing job to a fifteen-minute reach. He runs a transmission jack from the same lift power supply for pulling transfer cases, and a magnetic light bar clips to the column. This is the workflow argument for auto lifts for home garage use over stands and a floor jack: not that you cannot do the work, but that you will actually do the work you keep putting off. Nine months in, his 80-series has had every skid plate off, every diff serviced, and both driveshafts rebalanced. None of that was happening on jack stands.

What we would change if we ran the install again

Honest retrospective, because case studies are only useful if they tell the truth: we would have specified a lift with a taller reach for the ceiling he had, not a low-ceiling variant, if he had been willing to give up the bonus-room stall and take a taller adjacent bay instead. He knows this now. We would have added a second air drop at the back column, not just the front, because he ended up running a hose across the arms constantly. And we would have insulated the garage door on that bay first, because Iowa winter with a lift and no insulated door means cold hands on cold steel. None of these are dealbreakers, and none of them are reasons not to buy. They are the small things you learn only after nine months of using the lift, and we tell every overlanding customer to expect one or two of them regardless.
