When a customer just across the Iowa line in southern Minnesota called us about auto lifts for home garage seasonal storage, he was mid-way through framing a 40×60 pole building next to the RV and trailer service shop he already ran. The Site Survey That Started It All

Prepping a Pole Barn for a Two-Post Install
Pole barns are common around us, and they can absolutely hold a lift, but the slab is the whole story. His pour was four and a half inches over compacted base, mixed to 4,000 psi, and had been down long enough to fully cure. That combination is our green-light spec. Below four inches or below 3,000 psi and we start looking at four-post lifts instead, because they spread the load across four smaller pads instead of loading two columns hard. He had also embedded conduit for a 30-amp 220V circuit while the concrete was still wet, which is the cheap way to do things. Running conduit after the slab is done means chipping trenches or going overhead through the trusses. We staked his column locations with a chalk line, checked square with a tape measure diagonal to diagonal, and drilled his eight anchor holes the morning of install.
What We Loaded, Delivered, and Set in Place
He picked a 10,000-pound two-post overhead with three-stage front arms, a common home-shop configuration. The whole thing showed up on one skid: two columns, top overhead assembly, four arms, hydraulic pack, cables, hoses, hardware bag. We ratchet-strapped the columns to the trailer, drove up on install morning, and had the shell standing by lunch. The overhead crossbar is the piece that traps everybody with tall ceilings; it lives above your rise height, and if you don’t have the room, you cannot use that configuration. His 12-foot sidewalls gave us the clearance we needed with three inches to spare. By 4 p.m. we had the hydraulic system bled, both cables tensioned, and had cycled the lift up and down empty three times to prove it moved evenly.
First Winter: Storing Two Vehicles on One Footprint
The whole reason he bought was to stack cars. His summer car went up on the lift the second week of October, and his daily driver rolled underneath for the winter. He kept the lift parked on the second-from-bottom lock, which is around 30 inches of rise. That is more than enough clearance for a sedan to roll under. He checked the locks visually every couple weeks through the winter and never had a hint of a settle.
Six Months In: What He Wished He Knew Sooner
At six months he called and said two things. First, he wished he had ordered the taller adapters up front instead of buying them later. Frame contact points on his newer daily driver sit higher than the stock arm pads reach, and taller stackable adapters made lift-arm placement much easier. Second, he wished the shop lighting had gone in after the lift, not before. His original ceiling fixtures were positioned assuming an empty bay, and now half of them sat behind the raised vehicle. Both are small money problems if you plan for them. Neither is fatal if you don’t. Service Calls and Small Adjustments
