Every week we get a call from someone in eastern Iowa asking the exact same question about auto lifts for home garage projects: what do I need to check before I buy? A weekend hobbyist mechanic outside Waterloo turned that call into a proper written checklist because he did not want to miss anything and he did not trust the marketing PDFs the big-box sellers sent him. Here is his checklist, expanded with what we would add for anyone starting fresh. Print it. Take it to your garage with a tape measure.

Auto Lifts For Home Garage: Where Most Buyers Get Tripped Up
Ninety percent of buyer problems come from three things: not measuring twice, buying underrated capacity, and ignoring cylinder-side long-term maintenance. Those are the three items at the top of his list. Everything else on the checklist is a cascade from those three. When our Waterloo buyer walked into his own garage with a tape measure, the very first thing he did was measure the actual ceiling at four different points in the bay because he assumed it was flat and it was not. His trusses dipped almost two inches lower in the middle. That two inches was enough to force him from an overhead-style to a floorplate configuration. Two inches decided his entire build.
Concrete: The First Line on the Checklist
Concrete is where every install lives or dies. His slab was old, poured mid-1990s, and he had no idea what thickness or PSI it was. So we did what we tell every buyer to do: he drilled one exploratory hole with a rotary hammer where the column would eventually anchor. The drill broke through into gravel base at four and a quarter inches. That is right at the edge of the acceptable range for a 10,000-pound two-post. We recommended a slightly reduced-capacity lift with a wider footprint to be safe, and he was fine with the swap. If you cannot drill an exploratory hole, at least know when the slab was poured and by whom. Anything under four inches deep is a hard no for two-post auto lifts for home garage use.
Cylinder Seals and Why Rebuild Kits Matter
Hydraulic cylinders are wear items. They are not lifetime parts. A well-built lift cylinder will run for fifteen to twenty years with normal home use before the piston seal or rod seal starts to weep. When that happens you have two options: replace the whole cylinder or rebuild it with a seal kit. Rebuild kits are cheap, usually low three figures. Complete cylinders are mid three figures on the low end and up from there. The catch is that not every lift on the market has readily available rebuild kits. Before you buy any brand, ask us or the seller directly whether that model’s cylinder has an off-the-shelf seal kit. If the answer is no or unclear, we would steer you toward a different brand.
Weight Rating: Round Up, Not Down
His shortlist started at 7,000-pound capacity because his heaviest personal vehicle was around 5,500 pounds curb weight. We told him to round up to 10,000. The reason is not that he needed the capacity today. The reason is that lift capacity has almost nothing to do with the number on the sticker; it has to do with headroom over the number. A 10,000-pound lift working a 5,500-pound truck at 55 percent of capacity will last decades. A 7,000-pound lift working the same truck at 78 percent of capacity will wear its cables, cylinders, and pins measurably faster. Round up. This is one of the cheapest upgrade decisions in the entire auto lifts for home garage universe.
Diff Service Made Doable
His use case was mostly weekend maintenance: brakes, tires, oil, and rear diff fluid on his older truck. Diff service is a wheels-hanging job, so the lift needs to lift by the frame, not the tires. That is a two-post configuration or a scissor with lift pads on the frame. It is not a four-post, unless the four-post has rolling jacks to unload the axles. He picked a two-post overhead. Once the truck was up and the wheels dropped, his diff service went from a two-hour crawl on his back to a 45-minute stand-up job. He also finally torqued his diff cover bolts in a proper star pattern, which he could not do underneath a creeper.
What to Ask Every Dealer Before You Sign
Six questions. One: ALI Gold certified, yes or no. Two: is this exact model in stock or is it drop-shipped. Three: what is the standard rebuild-kit availability for the hydraulic cylinder. Four: what is included in the freight quote, curbside or in-garage. Five: what is the warranty term on structure, hydraulics, and cables separately. Six: who services this lift locally if something goes wrong two years out. He asked us all six. We answered all six on the phone in ten minutes. Delivery Day: The Checklist Before Bolt-Down
Last section of the list is the walk-through the morning your lift shows up. Match the data plate serial to your order. Verify the ALI directory number. Confirm every component on the freight bill is on the pallet. Photograph any dings on the columns before the driver leaves. Confirm the anchor kit is in the box. Confirm the hydraulic pump has oil and the hose set matches your configuration. Then, and only then, sign the bill of lading. Anything short of that and you are signing away leverage you will want back if something is wrong.
