A Cedar Rapids collector called us with a ceiling problem. He wanted auto lifts for home garage service, specifically a 2-post that would let him drop the exhaust on his summer car without kneeling. Overhead vs baseplate: what actually changes on auto lifts for home garage

The difference between overhead and baseplate 2-post auto lifts for home garage is where the hydraulic and cable runs live. On an overhead, they cross a horizontal beam that connects the top of the two columns — clean look, all-off-the-floor cables, but it requires roughly 12 feet of clear ceiling. On a baseplate, the equalization runs live in a plate at floor level between the two columns. That saves you the 12-foot ceiling requirement but adds a 4-inch-tall plate you drive over. Both configurations lift the same, hold the same, and use the same arms. The only real trade-off is you can’t roll a low-clearance sports car straight over the baseplate — you either use approach ramps or you shim the tires up an inch. That’s it. Overhead is prettier; baseplate is more forgiving in a low-ceiling shop. Neither is safer than the other, and both carry ALI Gold when you buy from the right brands.

A Cedar Rapids collector’s ceiling problem

His pole building was built in the 1990s with 11-foot side walls. Under the trusses, he had 10 feet 6 inches of usable overhead. Every overhead 2-post we sell — Rotary, Challenger, BendPak — needs 12 feet for the crossbar plus another few inches for the cable-slack allowance. He’d already priced a truss modification, and it was going to run into four figures plus the risk of touching the building’s engineered load path. When he called us and described the shop, we asked one question: is there any car you own that you cannot lift with a low-profile 2-post? He said no. That was the moment the baseplate configuration became the obvious answer. Auto lifts for home garage don’t have to be overhead just because that’s what looks best in the catalog. Match the lift to the shop, not the other way around.

Why we walked him off the overhead

Sometimes people push back when we recommend baseplate. The perception is that overhead is the premium option — cleaner sight lines, no floor plate, more “professional shop” look. That’s not wrong, but it doesn’t change the physics. In a 10.5-foot ceiling, an overhead 2-post either doesn’t clear or has to be de-rated to a shorter column, which cuts your useful working height under the vehicle. Baseplate at the same column height gives him the full working range without the ceiling issue. We laid it out, priced both, and the baseplate was actually about 3-5% cheaper because it’s a simpler assembly. He signed the same day. Install day in a 12-foot pole building

Install day ran five hours with two people. The slab was a 4-inch fiber-mesh pour from 2001, older than most, but we drilled a test hole and found it solid at 4.5 inches. Anchors set clean. The baseplate itself is a 4-inch-tall welded steel platform between the columns — we set it, torqued the anchors, mounted the columns to the plate, and ran the equalization cables inside the plate housing. Power unit mounted to the driver-side column, we bled the hydraulics, cycled unloaded three times, then loaded the collector’s daily-driver Suburban for the full proof cycle. Total shop downtime for him: less than a full day. That’s typical for auto lifts for home garage in Iowa pole buildings — the concrete is usually the wild card, the rest is choreography.

First winter: storing the summer car above

He didn’t intend to store on the 2-post — he’d bought it for service — but by November he had his summer coupe up on the arms at chest height and had walked his winter beater underneath for a two-week gap while he rearranged the shop. That’s a short-term move, not a long-term storage plan. On a 2-post, you should not leave a vehicle raised on the arms for months at a time — the pads under the frame are engineered for service duration, not sustained storage load. If long-term storage was his main goal, we’d have pushed him to a 4-post instead. The six-month service call

Six months in we drove out for the free tighten-and-check we do on every local install. The one thing we found: the concealed hydraulic hose crossover under the baseplate had a light film of hydraulic oil around one of the JIC fittings. Not dripping, not enough to lose fluid, but a whisper of a leak. We snugged the fitting a quarter-turn and it was dry the next visit. What baseplate 2-posts actually cost long-term

Twenty-year ownership on baseplate auto lifts for home garage looks almost identical to overhead: one cylinder rebuild around year 10-12, cable set replacement around year 15 if you’re heavy-duty, arm restraint pins as they wear. The only line item unique to baseplate is the equalization cable housing, which occasionally needs a fresh grease pack. It’s a five-minute job, once every couple of years, and the grease costs less than lunch. Total cost of ownership on a baseplate 2-post from a real brand runs a few hundred dollars a decade in parts. That is not the reason to be scared of baseplate. The reason to pick baseplate is that it fits your ceiling. It saves you a truss modification and it costs you almost nothing over time. That’s a good deal.
