Auto Lifts for Home Garage: An RV Shop Owner’s First Year in Council Bluffs

Alignment Machine For Sale Boca Raton, FL

Contact Us

An RV and trailer service shop owner in Council Bluffs bought a lift from us last spring for his home garage — separate from his commercial shop, in a converted outbuilding where he wanted to work on his own family vehicles without hauling them to work. He’d sold his commercial customers on lifts for two decades and had strong opinions about what he wanted for auto lifts for home garage duty at his house. This is his first year, from install through the six-month callback, plus the twenty-year math he ran on us before signing.

Auto lifts for home garage: an RV shop owner’s view

An RV shop owner sees a lot of home garages during service calls — RVs get parked in barns and pole buildings all across western Iowa, and a lot of those buildings also have a lift or want one. His view on auto lifts for home garage was direct: pick a 4-post if you can afford it, pick a 2-post if you cannot, pick a brand with a real US parts pipeline, and don’t skimp on install. He wanted the same rules applied to his own building. That gave us the shortest home-garage sales call we’ve had in a while — three phone questions, one on-site walkthrough, one quote, one signed order. The lessons from that install are the same lessons we’ve been giving other home-garage customers for a decade, but hearing them from a commercial shop owner buying for his own use hits differently.

Council Bluffs bay geometry

His converted outbuilding was 28×36, 14-foot side walls, 4-inch concrete slab poured in 2019 (well past cure, no cracks visible), 200-amp service. That’s a nearly ideal setup for auto lifts for home garage — enough width for a 4-post with walk-around clearance, enough length for a full drive-on with ramps, enough ceiling for a full-lift Suburban with roof rack, and enough electrical for the power unit plus a compressor plus lighting. The only geometry issue we found was a garage door track that dropped to 9.5 feet at the entry — fine for entry with a lift lowered, but the top-lock height was going to be limited by the door track, not the ceiling. We noted it in the quote and moved on. Small issues like that turn into big issues if you skip the walkthrough.

Why he picked a 4-post for his home garage

The RV shop owner has run 2-post commercial lifts for twenty years and can service any 2-post in his sleep. At home, he wanted a 4-post. Two reasons. First: his wife wanted him to park the summer car (a mid-70s coupe) up on a lift for winter storage, and 4-post is the storage-safe answer. Second: his home service work is mostly light — oil changes, tire rotations, seasonal fluid flushes — and 4-post is faster for those specific tasks because you drive on and lift, no arm swing, no pad positioning. Auto lifts for home garage split about half and half on the 2-post vs 4-post question. When the buyer is a commercial shop owner buying for home, they lean 4-post more than the general population does. Storage and drive-on speed matter more when you already have a 2-post at work.

Install day: concrete cores and electrical

We ran a hammer-drill test hole in the corner of the pad before setting anchors and pulled a clean 4-inch core. Anchor set clean at 4 inches with room to spare for the design load. Wiring was pre-run — he’d had his electrician pull a 30-amp 220V single-phase circuit to the corner where the power unit would mount, and he’d oversized to 240V single-phase to give himself margin. The power unit bolted to the front driver-side leg of the 4-post, we bled the hydraulics, cycled unloaded three times, then drove his half-ton up the ramps and cycled with load. Total install time: five hours. That’s fast for a 4-post but he’d done his homework — no site-prep surprises, no concrete issues, no wiring problems. Every home-garage install we do would run this smoothly if every customer did that much prep.

Tire rotation on the new lift

His first real use — tire rotation on the family Suburban a week after install. On a 4-post, tire rotation runs about 15 minutes with a rolling bridge jack. You drive on, raise the lift, roll the bridge jack under the front axle, raise it, pull front wheels, swap to rear, drop bridge, roll to rear, repeat. Faster than any 2-post rotation because you skip the pad-positioning step. He does the family fleet — two SUVs and a pickup — twice a year, and he estimated that’s about two hours saved per rotation cycle versus the jack-stand method his brother-in-law still uses. Auto lifts for home garage don’t have to be for hardcore mechanical work to be worth it. Tire rotation alone justifies the buy for a lot of home owners over 15-20 years of use.

First year: what broke, what didn’t

At the six-month callback we do free on every Iowa install, we found exactly one issue on his lift — the driver-side ramp latch had loosened slightly and the ramp was rattling at drive-on speed. Quarter-turn on the retention bolt fixed it, took thirty seconds. Cables checked in tension, hydraulics clean and dry, safety locks engaging on both sides. That’s a normal first-year outcome on auto lifts for home garage. One or two small mechanical settlings, no real failures. We tightened, we noted it in his file, we drove home. Read our 4-post maintenance schedule for what to check every year on your own. Most of it is 10 minutes with a wrench and a set of eyes.

Twenty-year total cost from an RV guy’s math

Because he runs a service shop, he ran the twenty-year math on our quote before signing. His conclusion: mid-tier 4-post costs about 15% more over 20 years than sticker (freight, install, one cylinder rebuild around year 12, small annual maintenance, one cable set replacement maybe year 18). Premium 4-post costs about 10% more over 20 years because the initial number is higher but the tail is cheaper. Cheap import 4-post is the wildcard — could cost 40% more, could cost 200% more, depends on whether the brand still exists in year 12. He picked mid-tier, ALI Gold certified, well-known brand with strong US parts. Auto lifts for home garage bought that way cost more up front and less over time. That’s the whole game. Read our parts pipeline comparison before you finalize your brand pick.
