A mobile mechanic in West Des Moines called us in early spring because his back was done. He had spent 14 years working out of a van with a floor jack and jack stands, and he had finally poured a slab in his own detached garage and was ready to buy the first serious lift of his career. He asked one specific question that turns out to be the deciding question on most auto lifts for home garage installs: overhead or baseplate? We drove out, measured, and installed the machine two weeks later. Here is the walk-through in detail, because his bay is almost identical to what most Iowa home shops look like.

The Building: A Real West Des Moines Bay

The mechanic’s garage is a detached 24×30 stick-built with 10 foot side walls, an insulated overhead door on the short end, and a four inch concrete slab poured two seasons ago at 3,500 psi. Trusses at 24 inches on center. Bay ceiling clearance under the truss bottom chord measures 118 inches, or nine feet ten inches. That single number ended up dictating everything about the lift choice — 118 inches is the crossover point between what an overhead lift can and cannot fit. Below about 145 inches, most overhead two-posts are already ruled out. Below 132 inches, all of them are.

The other measurement that mattered was door swing. The overhead door retracts along the ceiling on tracks, and when it is fully open the door panels sit at 108 inches. That put a hard limit on where the crossbar of any overhead lift could sit — it would collide with the door in the open position. This is the constraint people forget. You can measure your bay height at rest and think you have room, but the door swing eats several inches once the door goes up, and it eats them in exactly the spot where a lift crossbar has to live.

Why Baseplate Was the Only Answer for His Ceiling

Overhead two-post lifts run a crossbar between the top of the columns. It carries the equalizer cables and the shutoff bar that stops the lift if the vehicle contacts the ceiling. It is a clean, symmetric design. But it needs vertical space — 145 inches for a standard 10K overhead, and only manufacturers with a low-rise version can drop to about 138 inches. His bay had 118 inches after door swing. Overhead was mathematically impossible. Baseplate — where the equalizer routing runs through a plate across the floor between the columns instead of over the top — brings the top of the lift down to about 108 to 110 inches on most 10K models.

For anyone shopping auto lifts for home garage duty with low ceilings, baseplate is not a downgrade. It is a completely valid Gold-certified configuration on every major brand we carry. The tradeoff is a plate that runs along the floor between the columns, which means you cannot drive a very low car straight through and pull out the back. You have to back it out. For a mobile mechanic working on customer cars, that was a non-issue. For a builder who wants to drive through, it might be. That is the only real functional cost of picking baseplate over overhead.

What We Installed and What It Cost

We installed a Gold-certified 10,000 lb baseplate symmetric two-post with three-stage front arms, low-profile pad adaptors, and a set of truck-height stack pads. Total delivered and installed price landed in the mid four figures range, which is where most professional-grade auto lifts for home garage duty come in. Anything meaningfully cheaper is either uncertified, unsupported, or both. Anything meaningfully more is either commercial-duty overkill or a specialty machine like a scissor alignment lift. That mid four figures range is the honest market for a home-shop machine that will actually last.

The install itself took our two-person crew a full day. Concrete drilling for the anchor pattern, plumbing the hydraulic hoses through the baseplate, wiring the 220V motor to the sub-panel he had already run, calibrating the equalizer cables, testing every safety lock at every rung, and demonstrating arm restraint engagement to the owner before we left. He signed off after we ran three test lifts of his own truck. Total time on site was about seven hours. He was doing his first paying job on the lift the next morning.

General Daily Maintenance: Why Two-Post Wins Over Four-Post

The mechanic’s day-to-day work is oil changes, brake service, coolant flushes, and light suspension repairs. For that mix, a two-post beats a four-post every time. A four-post keeps the wheels on the ramps, which means the suspension is loaded, which means you cannot easily pull a rotor or drop a control arm without a rolling bridge jack. A two-post pads under the frame or pinch welds, the wheels hang free, and brake and suspension access is immediate. This is the single biggest reason we push working technicians toward two-post over four-post when they are shopping auto lifts for home garage use.

The one place four-post wins is long-term storage. If the goal is parking a spare car overhead all winter, a four-post is safer, easier to drive on, and does not require unloading the vehicle when you leave it. Some home shops end up with one of each. We installed a two-post for this mechanic and priced a used four-post for the same bay to sit against the side wall as a storage rack. That combination — one working lift, one storage rack — is what most serious home shops in central Iowa converge on eventually.

Concrete, Anchors, and What We Look For

His slab was almost perfect. Four inches thick, 3,500 psi mix, poured on a properly compacted base with two inches of foam under the vapor barrier. We verified thickness with a core sample near the anchor pattern before drilling, which is the extra step our install crews run on any pour we did not personally witness. If a slab measures below four inches at the anchor point, we either move the anchor location or advise the owner to pour a thickened pad. There is no arguing with a certified lift’s minimum concrete spec.

Anchors themselves are a specification, not a shopping choice. Every Gold-certified lift ships with a specific anchor type, embedment depth, and torque value in the manual. We use exactly what the manufacturer calls for and we torque with a calibrated wrench, not a rattle gun. Skipping this step is where hobbyist installs go wrong. If you are shopping auto lifts for home garage duty and plan to install yourself, budget for a torque wrench and read the anchor spec carefully. It is not a place for improvisation, and it is directly what your ALI certification depends on staying valid.

Electrical: 220V Single-Phase Is the Norm

The mechanic already had a 220V single-phase circuit run to the corner of the garage on a 30 amp breaker. That is exactly what most 10K two-posts spec. If your home shop does not have 220V available and only has 110V, you have three options. Run a new 220V circuit, buy the 110V-motor version of the same lift (available on some models, slower cycle time), or install a rotary phase converter for a used commercial three-phase lift. The first option is almost always the correct answer. An electrician can typically run a dedicated 220V circuit for a few hundred to a low four figures depending on distance from the panel.

We ask about electrical during the initial phone call because it is the number one delay we see on home installs. If the owner has not run the circuit before our install date, we cannot commission the lift. For anyone quoting auto lifts for home garage use, get the electrical scheduled at least two weeks before the install. Coordinate with a licensed electrician who has done a lift circuit before if possible. It is not complicated wiring, but it is dedicated wiring, and that detail matters for both safety and warranty.

What He Would Do Differently Now

Six months into ownership, the West Des Moines mechanic told us the one thing he wished he had known before buying was how much difference the low-profile pad set makes on modern low cars. He added a screw-height truck pad set after his first month, and a set of stack pads for lifted trucks after month three. Total accessory spend was maybe 8 percent of the lift itself, and it doubled the vehicle range he could work on.
