A 4-post with rolling jacks technically does this, but you are adding a whole set of hardware and a lift step. A 2-post gives you wheels-free at the ground and lifts the vehicle by the frame — clean and direct. For an independent shop that is growing suspension work into a bread-and-butter service, a commercial 2-post is the platform. The 10,000-pound class handles most passenger and half-ton work; 12,000 pounds for the heavier trucks. What surprises some independent shops is how much time a proper commercial lift saves versus the jack-and-stand approach. Warranty is straightforward — multi-year structural coverage, shorter on hydraulic and electrical components. When we have auto lifts installed in an independent shop that plans to keep the equipment 15 years, Rotary is the recommendation about 60 percent of the time. The reason is inventory. Challenger side of the comparison
Challenger’s core commercial 2-post line handles the same capacity range with a slightly different arm geometry and column profile. Suspension shops that run a lot of low-clearance vehicles — sport sedans, sports cars, low-slung imports — often prefer the Challenger asymmetric configuration because the front arms swing with a bit more clearance from the rocker panel. Warranty terms are broadly comparable. Parts pipeline is real and US-based. Cycle time and column geometry differences are small enough that most techs adapt to either brand in a week. Where Challenger tends to be chosen: shops with existing Challenger equipment (uniform maintenance is easier), shops that prefer the asymmetric geometry for clearance, and shops where the local dealer relationship is stronger. On our end, we install and support both, and about 40 percent of the commercial 2-posts we quote end up Challenger. If you had auto lifts installed with Challenger 10 years ago and it is running well, the natural upgrade path is another Challenger.
Parts pipeline: the emergencies that actually happen
The suspension bay call we get most often on a Monday morning: “The lift dropped an inch overnight — what’s leaking?” That is usually a rod seal starting to weep. Second most common: “The arm restraint is grinding — the truck rolled a bit when we lifted it last night.” That is a worn restraint gear, usually visible on inspection. Third: “The cable snapped — one column dropped and the other did not.” That is the equalization cable on a single-cylinder unit, which is a wear item on schedule. All three are common. All three are why the parts pipeline matters. Rotary and Challenger both have distributor networks that can put those parts in a working shop next day; off-brand imports frequently cannot. When a suspension bay is generating meaningful revenue, a day of downtime is a lot of money in lost jobs. That is why our recommendation for a working shop is always the brand with the shortest supply chain.
