Restoration work at low ride heights: what the arm geometry needs

Classic cars sit low. Muscle cars, hot rods, lowered restorations — they often have less than 4 inches of clearance under the pinch weld or rocker to work with. That changes what you look for in a 2-post arm setup. Standard swing arms with a 6-inch adapter block sometimes cannot reach the frame without contacting the rocker; low-profile arms with a 3-inch adapter fit under lower vehicles cleanly. Asymmetric arm geometry (front arms shorter than rear, columns rotated slightly) creates additional front-side clearance for opening low car doors while the vehicle is up. If restoration is your main work, ask specifically for a lift with an asymmetric configuration or a low-profile arm option. Both Rotary and Challenger commercial 2-posts offer these variants. The right geometry makes them routine.

How arm restraints and safety cams actually work

The arm restraint is a small gear-and-pawl mechanism at each arm pivot. When the lift is at ground level, the arms swing freely so you can position them under the vehicle’s lift points. As the lift begins to rise, the pawl drops into the gear, locking the arm in position. That prevents the vehicle from shifting sideways when it is raised — the arms cannot swing outward under load, so the vehicle cannot walk off its lift points. Safety cams (also called safety locks) are a separate system inside each column. Every few inches as the lift rises, a spring-loaded pawl engages a slot in the column, catching the lift mechanism if the hydraulics ever fail. You will hear the click-click-click as each pawl engages during a lift cycle. To lower, the operator releases the pawls manually or the system disengages them, then the hydraulics slowly lower. When you have auto lifts installed correctly, both systems are commissioned and tested in front of the shop before the crew leaves.

Auto lifts installed: what fails first on arm restraints

Arm restraints wear predictably. The most common failure is the gear teeth rounding off from years of use, especially on shops that swing arms hard or leave the restraint disengaged. When the teeth round off, the pawl does not seat firmly, and the arm can shift under load. That is a real safety issue and it is on every annual ALI inspection checklist. The second common failure is a broken or bent pawl, usually from someone forcing the arm against the restraint. Third is a corroded pivot pin, more common in outdoor storage or in shops with high humidity. The fix on all three is a restraint rebuild — replace the gear, pawl, and pin. It is a straightforward job that any competent tech can do in under an hour if the parts are on hand. This is exactly why we recommend having auto lifts installed by a dealer who stocks parts: when the restraint starts to feel loose or sloppy, you want a rebuild kit on your shelf the next day, not a purchase order that takes weeks.

The budget-to-configuration decision tree for a restoration shop

Question one: capacity. Restoration mix of passenger classics and half-ton trucks — 10K works. Add heavier iron (early trucks, medium-duty classics) — 12K. Question two: symmetric or asymmetric. Restoration shop with lots of doors opening at height and low-clearance vehicles — asymmetric. General mechanical mix — symmetric. Question three: swing-arm reach. Restoration frames vary; shorter and longer arms available on both brands, priced modestly differently. Question four: low-profile pad option. Add if your restorations sit low. Question five: what is the electrical? Single-phase 220V is standard; three-phase where the panel supports it. Question six: budget. New commercial 10K asymmetric with low-profile arms installed lands in the mid four figures; add 15 to 25 percent for 12K. Refurbished can knock 30 to 50 percent off. Once the tree is walked, the decision is usually clear. Getting auto lifts installed at a restoration shop is not complicated; it is a matter of matching arm geometry to the work you actually do.

Symmetric vs asymmetric: which restraint pattern suits low-clearance builds

The columns on a symmetric 2-post face straight forward; the arms are the same length front and rear. On an asymmetric, the columns rotate 30 degrees toward the rear and the front arms are shorter than the rear. That is the classic “open the door of your car while it is up in the air” advantage. For a restoration shop doing bodywork, that matters — you want to open doors, get in and out of the vehicle at height, and work around the front fenders without swinging arms in your way. The tradeoff: asymmetric loads the columns slightly unevenly compared to symmetric, and the arm-restraint pattern has to accommodate the shorter front arm swing. Both restraint patterns work fine when the lift is properly maintained; asymmetric arms wear their restraints on a similar schedule to symmetric. For most restoration shops, the choice is asymmetric for the door-clearance reason alone. When we have auto lifts installed at a body-and-metal shop, asymmetric is the default configuration about three-quarters of the time.

Safety-cam engagement: inspection and maintenance

Safety cams are the last line of defense. They should engage positively on every stop the lift makes going up, with an audible click each time. If a cam skips a stop, or engages inconsistently, that is a maintenance flag. Common causes: a corroded pawl spring, a bent pawl arm, or debris in the column channel. Annual inspection (which ALI requires and most insurance carriers appreciate) covers this — you will cycle the lift with a technician watching each column, listen for the clicks, and visually confirm engagement at each stop. Monthly, an operator should manually engage and release the safety cams to confirm they move freely. On our end, when we have auto lifts installed at a new shop, we walk the crew through the cam engagement procedure and the inspection routine. Neglected cams are the reason lifts ever fail catastrophically; well-inspected cams are the reason they do not. If your restoration shop has not inspected the cams in over a year, do it this week — it is a 15-minute job with the right eyes.
