Freight logistics: how the crate actually gets to a Davenport farm
Nine times out of ten, when a farm shop asks about getting auto lifts installed, the very first conversation is not about brand or capacity. It is about the truck. Most 10,000 to 15,000 lb 2-post lifts ship on a single skid weighing between 1,800 and 2,400 lb, and a common carrier is going to send an over-the-road tractor with a 53-foot trailer down whatever county road leads to the shop. Two-post versus four-post for farm-shop alignment
Almost every farm shop owner who calls us for alignment work assumes they need a four-post alignment rack with slip plates and turntables. Sometimes they do. Just as often, a symmetrical 2-post with an alignment kit is the better answer, because the same lift also does brakes, ball joints, wheel bearings, and everything else the farm truck fleet needs. A dedicated alignment rack costs more, takes more floor, and does not do the rest of the work a general-service bay does.
When we walk the shop, we ask what percentage of hours will be pure toe-and-camber alignment. If the honest number is above roughly 30 percent, a scissor alignment lift or a proper 4-post alignment rack starts to pay for itself. Arm reach, swing arms, and pickup clearance
A farm shop truck is not a Camry. The 3/4 ton and 1 ton pickups the shop is going to lift most days have a longer wheelbase, a wider rocker pinch weld gap, and enough weight on the front axle that a symmetrical arm setup can get squirrely if the arm geometry is not right. When we spec auto lifts installed for this kind of work, we default to a versymmetric or true symmetrical geometry with three-stage front arms and two-stage rear arms, and we make sure the reach numbers actually cover a long-bed dually.
The other detail people miss is the swing radius of a fully extended arm. A 2-post rated for a 12,000 lb crew-cab still needs floor space in front of the columns to swing the front arms into position under the pinch weld. We walk the owner through daily and monthly inspection with a printed checklist and a copy of the manual left on the tool bench.
