A Third-Generation Question We Get Every Year
Every spring, someone with a family shop in central Iowa asks the same question: my dad ran a 2-post overhead for thirty years, why would I go baseplate now? Or the reverse: my grandad ran a baseplate for good reason, why should I switch overhead? Both configurations are still made, both are safe, and both fit different buildings. The West Des Moines shop was a 30×50 with 14-foot sidewalls and a truss bottom that varied from 13-6 at the peak to 12-8 at the low corner. That low corner was going to determine his answer. He wanted to store one vehicle overhead seasonally, a project car, and lift customer vehicles beneath, which is a specific autolift garage use case that shifts the overhead-versus-baseplate math. We measured, ran the numbers, and gave him the recommendation before lunch.
Autolift Garage Basics: Overhead vs Baseplate
An overhead 2-post autolift garage runs an equalization cable across a top beam that connects both columns. Baseplate runs the cable underneath, at ground level, protected inside a metal cover or channel. Overhead is the industry default because it clears the working area: no cable underfoot, no tripping hazard, easier to pull tool carts under the vehicle. Baseplate is used when ceiling height won’t accommodate the top beam plus vehicle height plus lock stroke. The tradeoff is real. Overhead needs about 11 to 12 feet of ceiling for a standard 9K to 10K lift, sometimes as much as 13 feet for extended-height columns. Baseplate can run on 10-foot ceilings, sometimes 9-6 with the shortest columns available. In exchange for the shorter ceiling, baseplate makes you route hoses and cables around the floor cover, and the cover itself is one more thing to trip on. Which is why most shops with high ceilings go overhead and most low-ceiling home garages go baseplate.
Real Dimensions: Ceiling Height Math
Here’s the exact ceiling math for a 10,000-pound overhead 2-post like the Rotary SPOA10 or Challenger CL10. The overall column height on the standard variant runs about 11 feet 8 inches. The overhead safety bar sits about 4 inches below the top of the columns. Your tallest vehicle plus its stroke needs to clear the underside of that safety bar with at least 4 inches of margin for airflow around the shutoff switch. A typical passenger SUV runs 68 to 74 inches tall. Add the lift stroke of about 72 to 74 inches, and you need a ceiling at 12 to 12-6 minimum. Extended-height overhead columns exist and can push the safety bar to 13-6 or higher for tall service vehicles. Baseplate 2-post columns for the same 10K rating run 9 feet 6 to 10 feet 8 depending on model, and the ceiling constraint drops out entirely. What Baseplate Costs You in Head Room
Baseplate saves you ceiling and costs you head room in a specific way. The floor cable channel typically sits 4 to 6 inches proud of the slab across a 12-foot span between columns. Your creeper or floor jack has to roll over it, and any tools left on the floor near the channel are in the way. More importantly, when a large SUV is fully raised on baseplate, the working head room below is unchanged from overhead. The vehicle is at the same height either way. What baseplate changes is the vehicle-below scenario. If you want to store a vehicle on top and roll another vehicle underneath, the top vehicle’s ceiling clearance is what matters, and baseplate columns generally have less usable overhead lockheight before the columns end. Which is why baseplate is standard for low-ceiling home garages and less common for shops planning true two-vehicle stacking. Our West Des Moines shop wanted stacking, so this was the deciding factor in his autolift garage build.
Seasonal Storage: The Case for 4-Post
If seasonal storage is the primary use case, a 4-post autolift garage almost always beats a 2-post, because a 4-post holds a vehicle by its tires, not its frame, which is safer and gentler for long-term hold. A 4-post drive-on for storage typically runs 9,000 pounds capacity, has caster kits available for repositioning, and needs a similar ceiling to an overhead 2-post. For a family shop that wants to store the shop owner’s project car seasonally and lift customer cars for service beneath, a hybrid setup makes sense: a 4-post at the back wall dedicated to storage plus a 2-post at the working bay for service. We laid this out for our West Des Moines customer. The 4-post held the project 442, the 2-post handled his customer service, and neither had to compromise for the other. Total floor real estate was about the same as two 2-posts side by side but with much better use case fit and safer long-term storage.
Cross-Bar Height and Windshield Clearance
When you stack vehicles on a 4-post storage lift over a working 2-post, cross-bar height on the 4-post becomes the deciding measurement. Cross bars typically sit 3 to 5 inches below the runway surface. That means your parked vehicle’s top surface plus 4 inches of cross bar plus your working-below vehicle’s roof height plus a couple inches of clearance is the total stack. On a 12-8 ceiling, that math often forces the parked vehicle to be lower-profile. Sedans and coupes stack fine; an SUV on top of a truck usually doesn’t. We ran the numbers on his 442 stacked over a customer sedan and it worked with about 6 inches to spare. It wouldn’t have worked with a full-size SUV on top. Autolift garage storage is real, but the numbers are unforgiving and the wrong stack combination is a windshield crack waiting to happen the first time someone forgets and raises the lower vehicle a little too far.
Which Configuration Fits a West Des Moines Pole Barn
For his specific 30×50 with 12-8 at the low corner, we recommended an overhead 2-post at the shorter corner using extended-height columns to give more usable stroke, plus a 4-post drive-on against the tall wall for seasonal storage. That’s not the layout he’d started shopping. He thought he needed a baseplate 2-post plus a garage floor for the project car.
