Two Autolift Garage Configurations Compared: Iowa City Small-Fleet Side-by-Side

An Iowa City small-fleet operator called us last month with a specific autolift garage question: which of two configurations makes more sense for a bay that mostly does differential fluid service on a mixed fleet of half-ton and three-quarter-ton trucks. The SPOA10 is Rotary’s ten-thousand-pound asymmetric 2-post lift, and it is the default recommendation for a small-fleet autolift garage running mostly half-ton and three-quarter-ton trucks. Rated capacity is 10,000 lb, minimum ceiling around 12 feet, overhead bar clearance around 11 feet 10 inches, and rise is about 74 inches to the pad. Asymmetric column rotation of 30 degrees means truck doors clear the columns for easy driver-side entry. Arms are three-stage front and two-stage rear, and the pad heights extend high enough for the lifted body-on-frame trucks common in the Iowa City fleet market. The SPOA10 is ALI Gold certified. Price tier lands in the mid-range for a commercial 2-post, and lead time from our Ames warehouse to Iowa City is one to two weeks.

Configuration B: Rotary SPO16-AV Higher-Capacity

The SPO16-AV is Rotary’s sixteen-thousand-pound symmetric 2-post. This is a bigger lift both in capacity and physical footprint — you are looking at columns nearly 13 feet tall and a wider between-column dimension. Rated capacity is 16,000 lb, which handles a loaded one-ton dually or a light medium-duty. Rise is around 74 inches, and the arms are heavier gauge to handle the extra pad load. The SPO16-AV is also ALI Gold certified. For a small fleet running a mix that includes a service truck or a crew-cab dually, the SPO16-AV gives headroom that the SPOA10 does not. Price tier is roughly forty to fifty percent higher than the SPOA10, and ceiling requirements jump to 13 feet minimum for a safe autolift garage install.

The Differential Service Reality Check

Both lifts do differential fluid service well, but the workflow is different. On the SPOA10 asymmetric, a half-ton truck sits with the front axle forward of the column plane, so you have clean access to the front differential fill plug on 4WD trucks without the columns getting in the way of a torque wrench. On the SPO16-AV symmetric, the truck sits centered — great for weight distribution, less convenient for reaching around the columns during front-diff work. If your Iowa City fleet is 4WD heavy and you are doing regular front-differential service, the asymmetric SPOA10 is faster per job. If your fleet skews to rear-drive service trucks and heavier medium-duty, the SPO16-AV is the safer autolift garage choice for capacity headroom.

Ceiling and Bay Dimensions

The SPOA10 needs a nominal 12-foot ceiling and about 12 feet of bay width. The SPO16-AV needs a nominal 13-foot ceiling and 13 to 14 feet of bay width. Iowa City small-fleet shops we work with tend to be either pre-fab metal buildings with 14-foot side walls (fine for either lift) or older converted service bays with 11 to 12 feet (only the SPOA10 fits, and only if the overhead bar clears the trusses). We measure to the bottom of the lowest overhead obstruction — a light fixture, a heat tube, an overhead door track — not to the peak. A common autolift garage installation mistake is measuring to the peak and finding out on install day that the overhead sensor bar hits the door track.

Anchors, Concrete, and Slab Prep

Both lifts require a minimum four-inch, 3,000 PSI concrete slab. The SPO16-AV puts higher point loads through each base plate because it carries more capacity, so we prefer to see a six-inch slab under it in any bay that also sees heavy truck parking. The SPOA10 is more forgiving. We core-drill test plugs on any Iowa City autolift garage install where the slab age or specification is unknown — a lot of the older commercial floors along Highway 1 are three-inch pours and cannot safely anchor a 2-post lift without an overpour. Anchor kits are wedge-anchor style, torqued to manufacturer spec, and we retorque at ninety days. Both lifts use the same Rotary anchor kit part number for the standard concrete depth.

Install Time and Total Landed Cost

Install day on the SPOA10 runs three to four hours with two installers. The SPO16-AV runs four to six hours because the columns are heavier and the crossbeam is larger. Turnkey installed price on the SPOA10 including electrical hookup and load test lands in the upper mid-tier of commercial 2-post pricing. The SPO16-AV lands roughly forty percent higher on the total autolift garage bill. If the fleet’s heaviest vehicle is a three-quarter-ton, the SPOA10 covers the work and the extra cost of the SPO16-AV is not earning its keep. If the fleet has any one-ton dually or medium-duty in it, the SPO16-AV pays for itself in capacity margin the first time you actually need to lift a heavy service truck.

Which One Fits Your Iowa City Bay

The honest recommendation: SPOA10 for the small fleet whose ceiling is under 13 feet and whose heaviest routine truck is a three-quarter-ton — including 4WD front-differential work. SPO16-AV for the fleet with a real one-ton or medium-duty in the rotation, tall ceiling, and headroom in the capital budget.
