Step Three: Confirm Electrical Capacity
A home autolift garage lift almost always needs 220 volt single-phase power. Standard is a 30 amp dedicated circuit for most home 2-post and 4-post lifts. Check your electrical panel: do you have space for a new double-pole breaker? Is the panel rated to add the load? For hobbyists with older Ames homes on 100 amp service, adding a lift circuit can bump you toward panel capacity if the shop also runs a welder or compressor. Get an electrician out for a load calculation before you order the lift. A hobbyist who spends most weekends rotating tires does not need the biggest autolift garage lift on the market — a mid-rise or a low-ceiling 4-post covers the work.
Step Five: Measure Your Bay Width and Length
Ceiling gets all the attention, but bay width and length matter too. A 2-post autolift garage lift needs about 12 feet of clear width for the column footprint plus arm swing. A 4-post lift needs about 10 feet of clear width and 20 to 22 feet of clear length. If you plan to work around the lift with the vehicle in the air, add another 2 to 3 feet of clearance on the working side. Draw the bay footprint on paper, place the lift footprint on it, and confirm you have real walk-around space. A lift that is too big for the bay becomes a compromise on every single job.
Step Six: Plan the Delivery and Install Day
Home autolift garage delivery is by flatbed or lift-gate truck. Confirm that the delivery vehicle can access your driveway.
