The mechanic and the bay

The customer had spent a decade running mobile service out of a service van, doing oil changes, brake work, and undercar diagnostics in driveways across two counties. His work grew to the point where crawling under vehicles was consuming his knees and his time, and he decided to build a fixed autolift garage in a 40×24 pole building on his own property. The building was already up, the slab was four inches with rebar on 12-inch centers, and the ceiling was 14 feet to the truss chord. Panel was 200-amp single-phase. Location was rural, roughly ten miles from the nearest town, and the nearest lift dealer was 90 minutes north.

The lift decision

We spec’d him a Rotary two-post asymmetric 10,000-pound with taller-arm option for high-clearance work on late-model pickups. The reasoning was straightforward: mobile mechanics transitioning to fixed shops typically run a mix of passenger cars and half-ton trucks, and the asymmetric geometry lets the driver door swing open into the bay for interior diagnostics work. Ten thousand pounds handles everything a mobile guy sees except three-quarter-ton diesel pickups, and if those show up he can turn them away or work off the ramp. He signed the quote and we shipped in ten days.

Install day sequence

Install day on this autolift garage ran cleanly because the customer had done his prep. Slab was verified, panel was verified, and the electrician was on site to land the 220V feed. Our team arrived at 8 a.m. with the lift, unloaded, set the columns, plumbed the hydraulics, and had the first cycle test done by 3 p.m. The single hiccup: his workbench was six inches too close to the swing radius of the passenger arm, and we asked him to shift it. He did, on the spot. Total install day: nine hours from truck arrival to signed inspection. He drove his first vehicle onto the lift the following morning, a 2018 F-150, and the arm reach hit the manufactured lift points cleanly. That is the payoff for spec’ing carefully.

Exhaust and driveline access on the first few jobs

The customer’s first three paying jobs after install were an exhaust hanger replacement on a Toyota Tacoma, a driveline U-joint on a Chevy Silverado, and a catalytic converter swap on a Honda Odyssey. All three benefited from the two-post overhead configuration because both hands were free under the vehicle and there was no runway blocking the frame rail. On the U-joint job, the driveshaft came out cleanly with a floor jack under the transmission crossmember and the vehicle at chest height — the same job in a driveway would have taken twice the time on a creeper. His time-per-job dropped roughly 30% in the first month simply because of vertical access. That is the honest ROI on a fixed autolift garage conversion for a mobile-first mechanic.

Cable inspection intervals

A two-post overhead uses cables to equalize the two columns, and those cables are on a manufacturer-specified inspection interval. Rotary’s guidance calls for visual inspection every 90 days and a formal inspection annually. In a shop running 15 to 25 cycles a day, cables show wear at the sheaves after about three years, and replacement is typically needed at five to seven years depending on cycle counts and environmental conditions. The border shop is drier and cleaner than most commercial bays, so we projected longer intervals. We shipped him a laminated inspection card with the lift and set a phone-call reminder for the first-year check. He now runs the inspection quarterly with a flashlight and a Sharpie, marking dates on the card. Cheap discipline, big payoff.

Lessons for other mobile-to-fixed mechanics

Three lessons from this autolift garage case study apply to any mobile mechanic thinking about a fixed shop. One, spec the lift for the vehicles you actually see, not the vehicles you might see. Ten thousand pounds fits 90% of mobile-mechanic work. Two, prep the bay before install day — slab confirmed, panel confirmed, workbench cleared — because a nine-hour install turns into a two-day install when the electrician has to be called back. Three, buy from a dealer within a reasonable phone-support radius, because a 90-minute-away dealer is fine for parts but the phone relationship is what saves time on the odd Tuesday when something goes sideways. We were the phone at the other end for this customer, and that is the value proposition.

Where he is a year in

A year after the install, the border-area mechanic is running roughly 20 vehicles a week through his fixed autolift garage, has retained his mobile van for after-hours emergency work, and has added a portable A/C recovery machine and a mid-rise scissor for wheel work. His revenue is up substantially and his knees are happier. Cable inspection is on the calendar. He calls us maybe once a quarter for a parts question. The lift, in his words, paid for itself in the first eight months.
