The shop and the buildout
The shop in question is a mid-size RV service operation in the Iowa-Illinois corridor that had been servicing suspension on trailers and towable RVs for years and decided to expand into motorized RV work. The existing bay could handle a Class A only by leaving the door open in cold months — not sustainable. The owner built a new bay at 60 feet long with 18-foot ceilings, poured a 6-inch slab with rebar, and ran three-phase 200-amp service. The lift decision came down to mobile columns because Class A motorcoach service does not fit a fixed lift. He signed the quote in fall, took delivery in early winter, and installed with the electrician the same week.
Warranty registration on install day
The single most important paperwork moment in an autolift garage ownership cycle is warranty registration, and we made sure it happened on install day. Rotary and Forward both register through a manufacturer portal with the serial numbers, install address, dealer identification, and install date. The registration establishes the coverage start date and locks the equipment to the current owner. If registration is skipped or delayed, warranty timelines default to ship date, which can lose the buyer 30 to 90 days of coverage. Month two: first suspension job on a Class C
The first real suspension job in the new autolift garage was shock replacement on a 24-foot Class C motorcoach. The owner positioned six mobile columns at the axle locations, lifted the coach in unison to working height, and pulled all four shocks in under two hours. The equivalent job on jack stands would have taken half a day and involved two crawls under a heavy vehicle. Wireless communication between columns held clean and the safety-cam engagement was audible at each stop, exactly as the manufacturer manual described. First customer paid, first job clean, first month done.
Months three through six: suspension workflow refinement
By month four, the shop had settled into a suspension workflow that treated the mobile columns as a fixture rather than a piece of equipment. The columns lived at set positions along the bay, and the technicians rolled the coaches in over the pads. Shock replacements ran 90 minutes end to end. Leaf-spring rebuilds ran three to four hours because of the mass involved. Air-suspension diagnostics were faster because the coach could sit at working height while the tech watched the airbags cycle. The bay throughput on suspension jobs roughly doubled versus the old jack-stand method. Month seven: annual inspection and first parts order
Month seven brought the first calendar-scheduled inspection: hydraulic fluid check, ram seals visual, wireless module battery replacement, and pad wear check. We shipped the inspection kit ahead of the date so the owner could self-perform with a phone call to us for questions. The whole process ran two hours across all six columns. Hydraulic fluid was clean, one ram showed early seal weep (normal), and the module batteries came out at 40% capacity as expected. The owner reordered batteries and one seal kit, both from our Iowa warehouse, and had parts in hand in 48 hours. Month nine: the warranty claim that worked
In month nine, one of the six columns developed a slow drift — the ram was losing height under load over the course of an hour. The customer called us at 7 a.m., we walked through diagnostic steps on the phone, and identified the ram check-valve as the failing component. Because the warranty was registered on install day, coverage was clearly in force. We filed the claim with the manufacturer inside an hour and the replacement ram-valve assembly shipped from the factory that afternoon. The column was back in service within four days. Two lessons: register the equipment on day one, and buy from a dealer who files claims for you. Both mattered in this case.
Year one closeout: what worked and what he would change
