Pick the Lift That Fits the Work You Actually Do
The temptation for a body shop foreman is to buy the same lift the collision-repair chain across town uses. That is often overkill or under-spec depending on the mix of work. A shop that does bumpers and doors all day mostly needs a lift that raises a car to a comfortable working height and holds it there. A shop that is adding brake and rotor work to the mix needs a lift with clean access to the wheels, which means arm design matters as much as capacity.
For most Urbandale body shops adding a brake bay, a 10K asymmetric 2-post is the right pick for an autolift garage. Asymmetric rotates the vehicle forward on the arms, giving the tech an unobstructed door swing for suspension and interior access, and clear wheel access for rotors and pads. Symmetric lifts are cheaper but boxes the tech in when they need to work on both sides of the wheel at once. Spend the extra couple hundred on asymmetric.
Reading a Quote Without Getting Fooled
Lift quotes get sneaky. A quote that looks lower than everyone else’s usually has three tells: no ALI Gold Label listed on the model, no shipping included, and a stripped arm configuration that costs another line item to upgrade. Before signing anything on an autolift garage purchase, ask for the ALI listing page for the exact model, ask for delivered price to your zip code, and ask what is in the box versus what is add-on.
The reputable quotes will include the arm restraints, the standard height columns, freight to your dock or lift-gate, and the ALI documentation. Options like taller columns for lifted trucks, wider arms for dually pickups, and truck adapters are legitimate upgrades and should be spelled out separately. Any quote that hides options in a footnote is one you should walk away from. The point of a buyer’s guide is to make comparing quotes feel like comparing the same thing twice, not two different products.
Freight Class, LTL Carriers, and the Delivery Window
A 2-post lift ships as one crate on an LTL common carrier. Freight class typically runs 85 to 100, and the crate weighs 1,100 to 1,400 pounds depending on options. For an Urbandale body shop that means a semi with a 53-foot trailer pulling up to your bay door and asking where to put the pallet. If your parking lot cannot accept a 53-foot trailer, you need a lift-gate delivery and a plan to get 1,300 pounds moving from tailgate to shop floor.
Delivery windows are typically 4-hour windows scheduled the day before. The driver will call from 30 minutes out. Not every body shop has a forklift, and rental for a single lift-gate day is possible but adds cost and time. The realistic no-forklift unload works like this. The crate comes off the truck on a lift-gate, lowered to ground level, then walked from truck to shop with a heavy-duty pallet jack. Standard pallet jacks are rated to 5,500 pounds. A 1,300 pound crate rolls fine on smooth pavement or a level shop floor.
Where the pallet-jack unload gets ugly is a sloped driveway, a lip between asphalt and concrete, or a shop floor with cracks and joints. Any of those turn a controlled roll into a wrestling match with 1,300 pounds. For an autolift garage delivery to a shop with any of those conditions, spend the extra to rent a forklift for the day or negotiate white-glove delivery from the freight carrier. Trying to save a few hundred and pulling a hamstring is not a trade any foreman should make.
Crate Contents and the Pre-Install Inventory
Before the install tech shows up, open the crate and inventory the contents. Every autolift garage kit ships with columns, powerheads or hydraulic power units, arms, adapters, cables, hoses, hardware bags, and paperwork. The paperwork includes the installation manual, the ALI certification, and the parts list. Match the parts list against what is actually in the crate. Missing arms or missing hardware bags are common and easy to fix if caught early, painful if discovered on install day.
Photo-document any freight damage before the driver leaves. Crumpled crate corners, torn shrink wrap, and dented column ends are all signs to note on the delivery receipt. If you sign clean and then find a bent column, the freight claim gets much harder. Every buyer’s guide should have this line highlighted: inspect the crate, note damage in writing, take pictures, then sign. That paperwork protects you and it protects us when we file the claim on your behalf.
Setting Up the Bay for Brake Work
Once the lift is installed, the bay layout for brake service matters more than most foremen expect. A brake bay wants a rolling parts cart within arm’s reach of the lift, an air line drop within six feet of each wheel position, and a torque wrench station separate from the impact station. For an autolift garage that runs brake work as a real revenue line, we recommend permanent wall hooks for caliper hangers, a dedicated brake fluid catch station, and a brake lathe within one bay of the lift if you are doing on-car resurfacing.
