An Ankeny collector we installed for last spring keeps three cars stored on a four-post autolift garage rack and two more in the rotation on the shop floor — and the first tire rotation after install taught him more about lift ownership than the entire buying process did. We hear the same first-year story from a lot of autolift garage owners across central Iowa: the ceiling clearance you measured looks fine on paper, and the first time you raise a mid-90s Suburban to swap five tires you learn that the overhead door swing eats half your working room. Here is how the first year usually goes for a collector, and what we tell every new autolift garage owner to expect month by month.

Month one — unpacking and the first raise on an autolift garage rack

The first week of ownership is not driving — it is unpacking, staging, and aligning. A four-post ships in two crates and a runway bundle, and every collector we work with underestimates the floor space needed to lay it out. Before install day we ask the customer to sweep the shop floor bay to wall and stage cardboard so nothing scratches. On install we stand the front driver post first, level it in both axes, and shoot a laser to the front passenger post to set the runway width. Track width is more important than length — a runway too narrow will not carry a dually pickup, and one too wide leaves the tires hanging half off on a Mazda.

The first raise is the moment the room changes. Twelve-inch pneumatic tires roll onto the runways, the hydraulic hoses charge, and a two-and-a-half-ton coupe climbs seven feet in the air in about forty seconds. Our Ankeny customer said the first thing that hit him was how much bigger the shop suddenly looked with a car parked overhead. The second thing was the smell — new hydraulic fluid, fresh anchor epoxy, and cold rolled steel — which every autolift garage owner will remember years later without prompting.

Ceiling height in an Ankeny garage — the numbers that actually matter

Ankeny residential builds run twelve-foot side walls in a detached shop as the going norm, and a fair number of collectors ask for fourteen-foot walls when they draw plans. Twelve-foot side walls give you nine to ten feet of clear stack height on a four-post — enough for a passenger car underneath and a coupe or midsize sedan overhead, but not enough for a full-size SUV over an F-250. If you want a Tahoe over an F-250, you are looking at fourteen-foot walls and a twelve-foot clear-height post kit. That decision has to happen at framing, not at install.

The measurement we care about is not the peak — it is the truss chord. A gable roof at fourteen feet peak can have a truss bottom chord at eleven feet, and the lift cares about the chord. Ceiling fans, garage door tracks, and light fixtures also count as the ceiling for stack purposes. We ask every collector planning a home autolift garage build to send us a photo straight up from directly under each planned column and a tape measure reading in the frame. That single photo has saved more four-post projects than any spec sheet on our website ever has.

Door swing arithmetic when you own five vehicles

Five vehicles and one shop bay means choreography, not just capacity. A four-post storage lift lets you raise a car out of the way so the bay underneath is usable, but the raised car’s overhead has to clear the fully open overhead door. On a typical residential twelve-foot header the door track drops eight inches, which means the top of a car at eight feet of stack height is six inches from the tracks. That is fine for a coupe but scary for a lifted pickup with a roof rack, and it will not fit at all if you have a canoe strapped to the top.

Our Ankeny customer solved this by staggering — the door-side stack holds the coupe, the back-of-shop stack holds the crossover, and the driveway car stays on the floor. The fifth car lives on a friend’s four-post two miles away in the winter and comes home in May. This is normal. An autolift garage does not eliminate the storage arithmetic, it just doubles the answer. Every new owner should draw the shop in top-down view with cars in place before ordering, not after. Tire rotation on a four-post — why it changes the wheels-free question

The first thing our Ankeny customer wanted to do on his new lift was rotate the tires on his daily driver, and he learned in ten minutes that a four-post is not a two-post. To pull all four wheels on a four-post you need a rolling jack that sits on the runway crossmember, lifts the vehicle by the frame, and gets the tires airborne while the runway stays under the wheel wells. Without a rolling jack you are wheels-on, which is fine for oil changes and brake inspections but useless for tire work.

Every four-post autolift garage rack we sell can accept a bolt-in rolling jack in the seven-thousand-pound class, and we recommend ordering the jack in the same purchase. Adding it later means a second freight shipment and another install trip. The jack extends the utility of a storage lift from parking to real maintenance — rotations, brake work, wheel bearing service, and any suspension work that does not require the wheels to hang free with the springs unloaded. For anything requiring full unloaded suspension travel, a two-post is still the right tool. Most collectors we work with end up with one of each.

Month three — what breaks in the first quarter

Nothing catastrophic breaks in the first three months. What breaks is your assumptions. The battery-powered impact you thought would run every lug in the shop starts to lag on aluminum wheels when it is thirty degrees in the shop. The trouble light you clip to the truss shines great overhead but throws no light into the wheel well. The set of jack stands you bought for the floor jack days now lives on the wall because you do not need them anymore, and you keep tripping over the pancake compressor.

By month three our Ankeny customer had bought a corded impact for winter, added two LED strips under the runway with a magnetic base, and moved the compressor onto a wheeled cart. Nothing on the lift itself failed or needed adjustment. The quarterly maintenance we teach is a five-minute walk-around: check that all four safety locks engage on descent, look for oil weep at the power unit fittings, and verify the runway is still level side to side within a quarter inch. That is it for the first year in a home autolift garage.

Month six — the small tools you buy because you keep dropping them

Working overhead is a different physical experience than working on the ground, and every new owner buys the same three small tools by month six. First, a magnetic parts tray with a strong rare-earth magnet that sticks to the underside of a strut tower. Second, a telescoping magnetic pickup tool with a light, because the ten-millimeter socket you dropped is always in the darkest corner of the crossmember. Third, a roll-around creeper stool that puts you at the right height for wheel work instead of squatting on the floor.

The other purchase that happens by month six is a second lift accessory — usually a transmission jack, a coil-spring compressor rated for MacPherson struts, or a set of frame adapters that let you spot a body-on-frame truck at the factory jack points. These are not glamorous purchases, but they make the difference between using the lift once a month and using it every weekend. Year one — the maintenance rhythm we teach every owner

By the twelve-month mark, the maintenance rhythm settles into three touchpoints a year. Every three months: walk the safety locks, check for hydraulic weep, verify runway level. Every six months: grease the pulleys and the cable ends with the manufacturer-specified grease, cycle the lift ten times with a load, and eyeball the cables for corrosion or frayed strands. Once a year: full ALI-style inspection covering anchor torque, cable tension, hydraulic pressure at rated load, and safety lock engagement under load.
