A small-fleet operator out of the Quad Cities called us last quarter to compare two configurations of an automotive lift for home garage that he could install in his personal shop. He ran six work vans commercially, did the DOT annual inspections on them himself, and wanted the right lift for that job plus his own family vehicles. His two finalists were a 10,000-pound two-post and a 9,000-pound four-post, and he asked us to help him make the decision on the merits. The Fleet Reality: Annual Inspections Drive the Choice
Annual state inspections on light commercial vans mean brake checks, undercarriage visuals, suspension component checks, and exhaust integrity checks. All of that work is easier with the wheels off the ground. A two-post lift gets you wheels-free access in one motion. A four-post lift keeps the wheels on the runways unless you add a set of rolling jacks, which lifts the axles independently but takes an extra minute of setup per corner. For a shop doing occasional inspection work, either configuration will do the job. For a fleet operator doing six inspections a year plus routine service throughout, a two-post is the sharper tool for this specific workflow. Our Quad Cities customer knew that going in. What he did not know was whether the two-post’s downsides outweighed its inspection-day upside for the other 340 days of the year. That is the real comparison.
Ceiling Height and Bay Space Compared
His shop was a 30-by-40 building with 11-foot walls. That number matters. A 10,000-pound two-post with a standard overhead shutoff bar wants at least 11 feet 6 inches of ceiling to run its full travel with the overhead safety intact. He was short by six inches. A 9,000-pound four-post at max height puts the runways about six feet up, and his van roof sits at about eight and a half feet, so total clearance stayed under his 11-foot ceiling with room to spare. This one measurement flipped the conversation. An automotive lift for home garage that cannot achieve full travel because of the ceiling is a compromise you feel every single time you use it. He could have ordered a floor-plate two-post to gain overhead clearance, but those cost more and change the workflow. The four-post fit his existing building without compromise, so we started leaning that direction on physics alone.
Brand History and Why It Matters for a Fleet
Two brands we build home garage lifts around are Rotary and BendPak, and their histories affect parts availability differently. Rotary has been building lifts in the Midwest since 1925 and their parts pipeline is extensive — nearly every component on a Rotary lift built in the last thirty years is still available from stock. That matters a lot for a fleet operator whose lift is a business tool, because a lift down for a week is a week of missed inspections. BendPak is a newer brand out of California and their parts pipeline is also strong on current-generation lifts, though the very oldest models can be harder to source. For our Quad Cities customer, either brand carried adequate parts support. But when he asked which one we would put in our own personal shop with the expectation of running it for twenty-plus years, the answer leaned Rotary on parts continuity alone. Anchoring and Slab Requirements Compared
Two-post lifts anchor to concrete. Four-post lifts do not. That is the practical difference. A two-post transfers all of its load into the slab through five anchors per column, and the slab has to be a minimum thickness and PSI to hold those anchors reliably under load. A four-post sits on rubber feet and transfers its load into the slab as a distributed pressure across four large footprints. Our Quad Cities customer’s slab was an older four-inch pour of unknown PSI. We could not guarantee it would hold a two-post’s anchor loads without testing, and testing meant drilling cores and having them lab-checked, which is real money. The four-post sidestepped that entire question. For a first-time buyer of an automotive lift for home garage who is not sure about the slab, this alone can be the deciding factor. If you want to skip the slab investigation, four-post is the safer default.
Workflow: Storage Days Versus Service Days
Here is where four-post wins and two-post loses for most home shops. Any home garage lift only earns its keep about half the days it exists — the days you actually do service. The other days it exists, it can either sit idle or it can park a car on it. A two-post is idle on non-service days. A four-post can hold a vehicle full-time and become storage. For our Quad Cities customer, who parked two family cars in the same shop his work vans lived in, the storage value of the four-post was real. He estimated he would park his sedan on the four-post nine months out of the year. That is a use case a two-post literally cannot support. Parts Pipeline: What He Would Actually Order Over Time
Over a twenty-year ownership window, the parts most likely to need replacement on an automotive lift for home garage are cables (four-post: every six to ten years; two-post: rarely), rubber pads (both configurations, every four to seven years), hydraulic seals (both, every seven to twelve years), and one power unit rebuild or replacement (both, around year twelve to eighteen). Everything else on the lift is structural steel that outlasts everyone reading this. Total lifetime parts cost across those categories is roughly the same for both configurations. What differs is when the spending happens. Four-post owners pay a larger cable bill mid-life. Two-post owners pay a slightly larger pad bill because their pads take more direct pressure. Neither of these numbers is large in the context of a twenty-year tool. Both configurations are supportable long-term if you buy the right brand and keep the paperwork.
What He Chose and Why
He chose the four-post. Three reasons, in his order. His 11-foot ceiling did not comfortably support the two-post’s full travel. His four-inch slab of unknown PSI made the two-post’s anchor loads a question mark. And his family sedan needed a winter parking spot that only a four-post could offer. He accepted the small inspection-day compromise — he would order a set of rolling jacks and lift axles independently when he needed wheels-free access — and moved on. This is a very common outcome.
