Last spring a mobile mechanic working the Iowa-Illinois corridor between Davenport and the Quad Cities called us about automotive two post lifts because he was done crawling under half-shafts on gravel driveways. He had a leased 30×40 pole building he was slowly building out and needed the lift decision to sit at the right point in his construction sequence — pour the slab, then power, then lift, then compressor, then benches. Why a mobile mechanic finally went stationary
The math on doing CV axle and half-shaft work on driveways stops making sense fast. A CV replacement on a modern Subaru or a lifted Silverado is a 90-minute job with a lift and a two-hour job without one, and the hardest part is not the wrench work — it’s the crawling. He was averaging four CV or half-shaft jobs a week across the corridor and losing an hour on each one to bad access. Automotive two post lifts flipped that math. Once he had a fixed bay two miles off I-80, he could stage the job, run to a customer for pickup, and drop the car on the arms with the axle already staged. Same day turnaround, and no more sunburns while chasing a boot clamp.
Sequencing the slab pour first
The build-out started with the slab, and that was the moment automotive two post lifts had to be picked. You cannot pour concrete and figure out the lift later — the pour spec depends on the lift. We landed on a Challenger CL10V3, and the manufacturer sheet called for 4-1/4″ of 3,000 PSI reinforced concrete under a 12×24 foot footprint at minimum. He poured the whole bay 6″ with #4 rebar on 12″ centers because the extra 40 dollars a yard was cheaper than a saw-cut do-over. Slope was the other trap — a 1/8″ per foot slope to a floor drain is fine, but anything more than that will tilt the columns off plumb during the anchor set and you’ll fight the shims for the life of the lift.
Rough-in power before drywall
Second step in the sequence was electrical. Automotive two post lifts almost universally run 208-230V single-phase, and this shop had a fresh 200A service, so a double-pole 30 with 10-gauge wire back to the panel was the play. Key move: pull the wire before the drywall goes up, and drop the whip out of the ceiling above the drive-side column with three feet of slack. Do that and the lift install is thirty minutes of anchor bolts instead of a Saturday of fishing wire through finished walls. He also pulled a 220 for the compressor at the same time and a 110 quad-box at the tool bench — all one electrician trip, all before the walls closed up. That saved him about eight hundred dollars in electrician trip charges alone.
Freight arrival and unloading
Automotive two post lifts ship strapped upright on a single pallet, usually around 1,900 to 2,300 pounds. The corridor freight terminal ran him a residential liftgate delivery, and he cleared the driveway wide enough for a 53-foot dry van. What we always tell buyers: be on-site, inspect for freight damage on the driver’s clock, and photograph any dented shrouds or cracked cartons before you sign. He caught a scuffed column cap on this shipment, noted it on the BOL, and the manufacturer replaced it under freight insurance the next week. Without that note the claim would have died. He unloaded the pallet with a forklift borrowed from the ag co-op next door — no rental fee, one case of coffee delivered.
Install day and anchor set
Install ran roughly six hours from tearing plastic to the first vehicle on the arms. The key moves were laying out both columns with a chalk line and confirming the distance between anchor patterns matched the vehicle track he’d be lifting most (a mid-size crossover, so a 108-inch drive-through was fine). We drilled anchors with a hammer drill, blew out the holes with compressed air, and torqued the wedge anchors to spec in two passes. Lock the safeties, cycle the lift five times empty, then lift a known vehicle and cycle again. His safeties clicked cleanly on the first try and he opened the shop the following Monday.
Compressor, benches, and the rest of the sequence
After the lift went in he added a 60-gallon compressor plumbed in copper, a rolling tool cart, an oil drain and a fluid caddy, and a wall bench for the impact battery station. The order matters — lift first, then compressor within eight feet of the lift’s air-line kit, then benches so they don’t foul the arm swing radius. We see mobile mechanics buy the benches first, mount them, and then realize the arms can’t reach the driver’s side of a wide truck without swinging into a workbench. What we’d do differently next time
Two things. First, we would spec the slab at 8″ not 6″ — the incremental cost was small and it opens the door to going up to 12,000 lb capacity if he ever wants to service heavier trucks. Automotive two post lifts are cheap to upgrade later if the slab supports it and expensive to upgrade if it doesn’t. Second, we would pre-plumb a floor drain closer to the passenger-side column. His current drain is fine for coolant and washer fluid, but for CV axle work you end up dropping gear oil onto rag, then walking it across the bay.
