Myth: only German lifts are precision enough for Euro cars
Automotive two post lifts made in the US by Rotary, Challenger, Forward, and BendPak meet or exceed the same ALI/ETL certification standard as any European-manufactured lift on the market in the United States. The precision that matters for a BMW or an Audi is arm-pad placement and rated capacity — both are engineered spec, not country of origin. What is true: German-brand lifts in the US sometimes shift arm-pad geometry closer to what European factory service manuals reference. That is a real convenience for a Euro-only shop, but it is not required. We have installed Rotary and Challenger two-posts under Euro-only Ames shops that never had a problem lifting the marque list from BMW through Porsche. Buy the lift, not the flag.
Myth: the American brands are cheaper because they cut corners
Rotary automotive two post lifts have been made continuously in Madison, Indiana since the 1920s. Challenger has been building lifts in Louisville, Kentucky since the ’80s. The engineering on those platforms is mature, the QC is documented, and the ALI Gold certification process is neutral to country of origin. What is different: the American brands have distribution networks that push volume, and volume drives unit cost down. That is why the Rotary SPO10 costs less than a comparable European overhead 2-post at the same capacity, and it has nothing to do with steel gauge or hydraulic quality. The cost delta is a supply-chain artifact, not a quality delta. Any shop owner who has installed both platforms and pulled apart the power unit knows this.
Myth: parts pipelines dry up on discontinued lifts
This one has a grain of truth and a lot of exaggeration. Rotary and Challenger both maintain parts availability for automotive two post lifts back roughly 25 years — arms, hydraulic cylinders, power units, cables, and safeties are all still stockable for the SPO/SPOA series and CL series from the ’90s forward. Where the pipeline actually thins is on obscure European brands that exited the US market in the 2000s. If your shop is running a lift from a brand that isn’t listed with a current US distributor, that is a genuine future-parts risk. We audit brand-specific pipelines regularly and can tell you whether a given lift is well-supported for a decade forward. Ask before you buy used.
Myth: Rotary and Challenger are the same lift under different paint
They share a lot of design philosophy — both are overhead-beam or baseplate configurations, both use similar arm geometry conventions — but they are not the same lift. Rotary’s SPO series uses a chain-driven equalizer system. Challenger’s CL series uses cable equalizers on most models. The maintenance profiles differ, and the failure modes differ. Chain lasts longer but requires periodic lubrication; cable is quieter but wears at anchor points over years. Automotive two post lifts of either brand will run 20-plus years with modest maintenance. The choice between them is real but marginal, and most Ames specialty shops end up picking based on availability, freight timing, and which local installer they trust. We install both and stock parts for both.
Myth: suspension work needs a special lift class
It does not. Any properly-sized 2-post handles suspension and shock work on a European car provided arm-pad points align with the manufacturer’s frame-cradle locations. On a BMW E90, that means arm pads land on the reinforced pinch-weld pad locations under the sills. On an Audi B8, similar. The lift you need is a standard 9K or 10K automotive 2-post with three-stage front arms. What is nice-to-have for Euro work: rubber pad blocks in a few heights so you can dial in pad contact without stacking wood, and a low-profile arm option so the pads clear the rocker air-dam skirts on lowered cars. Both are available for well under $200 on Rotary and Challenger platforms.
Myth: an ALI-certified lift means it’s guaranteed for your car
ALI certification means the lift structure and safeties meet a published third-party engineering standard for the rated capacity — it does not mean the arm geometry is correct for every make. Automotive two post lifts require you to confirm arm-pad location matches the vehicle’s factory-recommended lift points. For most European cars that is easy. For some — certain first-gen Cayennes, some W211 wagons — the recommended pad locations sit at the extreme end of the front-arm extension and you need a longer-reach arm option. Ask us for the arm-reach spec on any lift you are considering, especially if your Euro book leans toward SUVs and station wagons.
The brand-history summary and what to buy
Rotary is the oldest continuously-produced automotive two post lifts brand in the US and has the deepest parts pipeline. Challenger is the volume commercial choice with a strong dealer network. BendPak leans toward home and light-commercial. Atlas is the value option and works for a home shop but is not what we’d stock in a heavy specialty bay.
