What the shop owner assumed, and what a lot of EV shop owners assume, is that arm restraints are a modern add-on and safety cams are an optional feature. Neither of those is true. Myth 1: Arm restraints are an optional feature
They aren’t. Arm restraints are required equipment on all ALI Gold-certified automotive two post lifts, and they have been for a long time. The mechanism is a spring-loaded gear that engages the pivot of each arm the moment the lift begins to rise, locking the arm’s swing position so the vehicle can’t slip off the pads by rotating an arm sideways. It’s not fancy. It’s a stamped gear with a spring-loaded pawl. And it’s the single most important secondary safety feature on the entire lift.
The myth we still hear from first-time EV shop owners — and the one the Des Moines shop’s underwriter was asking about — is that arm restraints are a factory-optional add-on that can be omitted to save money. On any lift we sell, they are not. Every automotive two post lifts model in our catalog ships with arm restraints as standard equipment because they are part of what earns the ALI Gold certification. If someone is quoting you a lift without arm restraints, or with the arm-restraint mechanism removed for a lower price, walk away. That’s not a lift you want under a $65,000 Model Y with a battery pack that costs more than most engines.
Myth 2: Safety cams engage after the lift stops
Safety cams — the mechanical locks that catch the carriage at fixed intervals as the lift rises — are often misunderstood as “parking brakes” that engage only when the operator stops the lift. That’s backwards. On modern automotive two post lifts, the safety cams engage continuously as the lift rises. Each time the carriage passes a lock notch on the column, the cam clicks into place and holds. If hydraulic pressure is lost at any moment — a hose blows, a seal fails, someone accidentally hits the lower valve — the carriage drops only to the next cam engagement, which is typically no more than three to five inches below its current position.
This is a critical safety property. It means a fully-loaded automotive two post lifts is never in free-fall risk during the rise or hold phases. The operator does not have to remember to engage a lock. The lift does it automatically, continuously, at every notch. What the operator does have to do is set the lock deliberately before working under the vehicle — the operator raises the lift slightly, releases hydraulic pressure to seat all locks, and then works. For an EV shop working on a 4,900-pound Model Y or a 6,300-pound Lightning, this behavior is non-negotiable. The lifts we quote all have it. Some cheaper imports do not.
Myth 3: EV vehicles are too heavy for standard 10,000-pound lifts
Sometimes. Not always. This is a myth in either direction — some EV shops assume they need to jump to 15,000-pound heavy-duty lifts for every vehicle, and some assume their 10,000-pound lift will be fine for everything. The real answer is model-specific. A Model Y weighs about 4,400 pounds. A Model 3 weighs about 4,000 pounds. A Mustang Mach-E is 4,900 to 5,100 pounds. An Ioniq 5 is around 4,700. A Rivian R1S runs 6,700 to 7,100 pounds. A Lightning Lariat Extended Range is about 6,900 pounds. Standard 10,000-pound automotive two post lifts handle every one of these with margin.
Where the myth becomes problematic is on the truck side. A Silverado EV, a fully loaded Hummer EV, or a Rivian R1T with the tow package all sit in the 8,000-plus-pound range. That’s still under a 10,000-pound lift’s rating, but it’s operating close to the ceiling and it doesn’t leave margin for wheel-and-tire weight variations or for the fact that batteries sit low and shift the center of gravity. Myth 4: Arm restraints and safety cams don’t need maintenance
They do. Both. This is the myth that gets shops in trouble in year eight or ten of ownership. Arm restraints are spring-loaded mechanical gears; over time, the springs weaken, the pawls wear, and dust and debris accumulate in the pivot housing. The engagement gets sluggish and eventually can fail to engage at all. Safety cams are also mechanical; the return springs weaken and the pivot pins wear, and the lock can fail to seat when the carriage passes it.
ALI recommends an annual inspection on every commercial lift in service, and that inspection covers both mechanisms. Our install crews walk every buyer through the visual inspection routine at startup and we recommend an annual service inspection thereafter. For high-cycle EV shops running eight to twelve lifts a day, we’d bias toward semi-annual inspection. The parts are cheap and available — a full arm-restraint rebuild kit runs in the low-hundreds — and the cost of neglect is a lift that no longer meets ALI Gold’s continuing-inspection requirement. What the Des Moines EV shop actually bought
He ended up buying two Rotary SPOA12 asymmetric overhead automotive two post lifts, both 12,000-pound capacity, both with three-stage front arms and two-stage rears. The 12,000-pound rating was intentional overkill for the Model 3 and Model Y he sees most, but it gave him the working envelope for the R1T and Lightning work he was starting to take on. The three-stage fronts got him under the low pinch-welds on modern EVs (they sit low, and the OEM pad locations are unforgiving). The insurance conversation every EV shop should have
The Des Moines shop’s underwriter conversation is not unique. As EV work has grown, commercial-property insurers have gotten more specific about lift documentation. What they typically want to see is: the make, model, capacity, and ALI Gold certification number of each lift; the annual inspection record; the arm-restraint and safety-cam maintenance record; and evidence that operators are trained on the specific model. Some underwriters also want the anchor bolt torque specifications and the concrete test data from install.
All of this is straightforward paperwork if you buy automotive two post lifts from a supplier who understands the request.
