A rural farm-shop owner in northern Missouri emailed us a photo of his outbuilding and asked what he needed on a set of automotive two post lifts to safely handle wheel bearing service on his pickups and his neighbors’ trailers. He’d been reading online forums and got tangled up on arm restraint terminology, and he wanted a straightforward pre-purchase checklist that would leave him with a lift he could trust for the next twenty years. Why wheel bearing service is a specific safety concern

Wheel bearing service on automotive two post lifts involves removing the entire hub and knuckle assembly from a lifted vehicle, then applying pressing force — sometimes several tons of it — to pull the old bearing race and press the new one in. Reading the arm restraint spec on a data sheet

Every set of automotive two post lifts ships with a spec sheet, and the arm restraint section is usually two or three lines. What you’re looking for: is it gear-and-pawl or pin-and-hole? Is it continuously variable or discrete? Is the pawl spring-loaded to auto-engage, or does it require a user step? Gear-and-pawl continuous-variable spring-loaded is the design you want. Rotary and Challenger both use this design across their SPO and E series. Some import brands don’t, and their spec sheets sometimes bury the mechanism type in fine print.

If the spec sheet doesn’t clearly state the arm restraint design, that’s a red flag on its own. We tell every buyer to ask the seller directly and get the answer in writing. A reputable dealer will answer that question in one sentence. A less reputable dealer will dodge. For the northern Missouri buyer, we sent him the Rotary SPOA10 spec sheet with the arm restraint section highlighted, and he had the confirmation he needed within an hour. That kind of transparency on mechanism design is standard on the brands we sell. It should be standard on every set of automotive two post lifts, but in practice, it isn’t.

Testing safety-cam engagement on automotive two post lifts

Safety-cam engagement can’t really be tested on paper — it needs a physical check on the lift itself. What we do on every install is raise the lift with no vehicle, listen for the ratchet clicks as the carriage rises, and then release the up button. Clean cams give a firm click into engagement and hold zero movement. Sticky or worn cams either don’t click cleanly, click late, or allow the carriage to drift down half an inch before catching. The northern Missouri buyer’s shop was newer construction — six-inch slab, rebar reinforced, 14-foot ceiling at the peak, and a 200-amp panel with room for a lift breaker. Every physical check passed on the first walk. That’s not unusual for modern pole-barn builds, but older farm shops sometimes have three-inch slabs, no rebar, or a 100-amp service that can’t accommodate a new 30-amp draw. When any check fails, we quote the remediation before we quote the lift, because installing a lift on a bad slab isn’t safe regardless of how good the automotive two post lifts themselves are. Slab first, then lift.

Vehicle mix and capacity — sizing right for farm work

Farm-shop vehicle mixes are broad. A rural buyer might lift a passenger sedan on Monday, a three-quarter-ton pickup on Tuesday, and a small utility trailer on Wednesday. Weights range from 3,000 lbs to 8,000+ lbs. For that mix, a 10K asymmetric is often adequate, but if the shop expects any regular one-ton or dually work, a 12K is worth the modest upcharge for the extra capacity margin. Our northern Missouri buyer wanted to handle up to a three-quarter-ton diesel occasionally, which loaded weight-wise came in at 7,200 lbs at the axle. That’s within a 10K’s spec but close to the margin, and for pressing work we like to have more headroom. We recommended a 12K asymmetric, which cost about $800 more than the 10K but gave him a comfortable capacity margin for the heaviest truck he expected. For name-brand lifts, structural runs five years or more, hydraulic runs two years, and labor runs one year. Read the warranty carefully — some brands quietly exclude common wear parts like seals and cables from coverage. Those are the parts most likely to need replacement in year three, so exclusion matters.

The parts pipeline is the checklist item most buyers skip. What you want is a brand whose dealer network stocks cables, hoses, seal kits, safety-cam gears, and arm-restraint parts in your region — not shipped from overseas. The final checklist item is the install itself, and the walkthrough at turnover. The turnover walkthrough covers arm-restraint engagement, safety-cam function, hydraulic pressure check, and daily and monthly maintenance points. It’s usually a thirty-minute call at the end of install day.

The northern Missouri buyer did his own install with a local electrician for the breaker run and a rented forklift for the unload. Total time from freight arrival to first vehicle lift was three days. He recorded a video of the cam engagement test for our records and confirmed the arm restraint gears seated cleanly.
