They’d read half a dozen contradictory articles online, had a friend giving them opinions, and wanted the real answer on questions like whether Euro-spec vehicles need special lifts, whether transmission service really requires a scissor, and whether the sequence of pouring concrete and installing lifts actually matters. We hear these myths often at Auto Lift Services, and here’s the honest rundown we gave them across six of the most common ones.

Myth one — European cars need special lifts

The first myth we bust with European-marque shops is that Euro cars need European-spec automotive two post lifts. They don’t. What Euro cars need — Audis, BMWs, Mercedes, Porsches, Volvos — is careful attention to lift-point placement. Most European vehicles have specific factory lift-point locations, often reinforced pinch welds with small dimples marking the exact spot. A standard 10K asymmetric lift with 3-stage arms and pin-adjustable pads accommodates every European vehicle we’ve serviced, provided the tech knows the correct lift points.

What we do recommend for Euro specialty shops is a set of dedicated adapter pucks and pinch-weld pads sized to the marque. BMW and Mercedes have specific puck adapters that fit their factory lift-point cutouts. Those are a $50 accessory, not a $5,000 special lift. Automotive two post lifts sold as “European-spec” in some catalogs are just standard lifts with the marketing spin flipped. Myth two — transmission service requires a scissor lift

Transmission service is one of the loudest myths in shop-forum territory. The claim is that dropping a transmission requires a scissor or four-post because you need to support the wheels while the transmission comes out. Not true. Transmission service on automotive two post lifts is a two-person job with a transmission jack, and it works fine on any properly configured two-post. The wheels aren’t loaded during the drop — the vehicle is supported at the frame lift points, and the transmission jack rolls under the trans, supports it, then lowers it out cleanly.

Where the myth comes from is a mismatched tool situation — a shop with a low-profile scissor that can’t accommodate a transmission jack because the jack can’t fit under a floor-level lift. On a two-post with the vehicle raised to full working height, a transmission jack has all the clearance it needs. The Council Bluffs shop does regular ZF eight-speed and DSG service, all of which are two-post-friendly jobs. What they needed wasn’t a scissor; they needed a good transmission jack. We priced them one with the lift order. Two-post remains the primary configuration for European service work, full stop.

Myth three — install automotive two post lifts before the slab cures

New-build shops sometimes want to install automotive two post lifts within a few days of pouring the slab. Fresh concrete doesn’t have full compressive strength until 28 days after pouring — that’s the industry-standard cure time for 3,000 psi mix. Anchoring a lift into concrete that hasn’t cured means the anchors can pull under load, and the columns can tilt over time. We’ve seen it happen on rushed installs where a general contractor promised a lift install before the concrete company’s cure window was up.

The right sequence is: pour slab, cure 28 days minimum, then install lift. If you’re building a new shop with an aggressive schedule, plan the concrete pour six weeks before you want the lift running. That gives you cure time plus a scheduling buffer. For the Council Bluffs shop doing a full build-out, we told them to time the freight arrival for 30 days after the slab pour, and to schedule install for day 32. That gave two days of buffer on the cure and let their crew stage the lift as the slab hardened. Ignoring cure time is a myth-busted issue that costs shops thousands in remediation.

Myth four — you don’t need permits for a garage build-out

The permit myth comes up on almost every new-build shop we quote. Owners think a private commercial garage — especially in rural Iowa or a low-regulation county — doesn’t need building permits for a lift install. In most jurisdictions, that’s not true. Automotive two post lifts installed in a commercial setting typically require an electrical permit for the 220V circuit at minimum, and often a building permit for the anchor work into the slab. Insurance requirements sometimes overlap building code requirements here.

Council Bluffs is on the Nebraska border, which means both Iowa and Nebraska codes get referenced depending on the exact zoning. We didn’t quote the permit work for the shop — we told them to call the city permitting office directly and confirm what was required. They came back with an electrical permit needed and a self-certification on the anchor set. Total permitting cost was under $200 and took a week. Skipping permits means your insurance carrier can deny coverage if there’s ever an incident on the lift, and your local inspector can shut down operations. Not worth the risk. Permit as a rule, and factor it into the build-out sequence.

Myth five — the biggest lift is always the safest lift

Bigger-is-safer is a myth that costs shops real money. A 15K or 18K lift is not safer than a 10K for a passenger-car shop; it’s just heavier, more expensive, and slower to operate. Automotive two post lifts are engineered for the capacity they’re rated at, and the safety mechanicals — arm restraints, safety cams, cylinder relief valves — all work the same across capacities. A 10K lift under a 5,000 lb Audi is not less safe than a 15K lift under the same Audi. Both are well within their spec, and both engage their safeties identically.

Where bigger becomes counterproductive is in ergonomics and cost. Heavier lifts have thicker arms that swing wider, meaning less door clearance and more time repositioning. Bigger cylinders mean more oil volume and slower cycle times. Bigger lifts also cost more upfront, freight is more expensive, and install is heavier work. For a European specialty shop lifting a mix of sedans and coupes weighing 3,500 to 5,500 lbs, a 10K is genuinely the right size. Buying up to 12K adds cost and complexity for no safety benefit. The Council Bluffs shop initially wanted 12K on that “bigger is safer” idea; we walked them back to 10K and saved them meaningful money without giving up anything real on capacity.

Myth six — imports are always cheaper long-term

Import automotive two post lifts sometimes list cheaper on paper than name-brand ALI-certified units. The myth is that the total ownership cost follows the sticker. It doesn’t. What we see in the used market and in service call volume: imports typically cost 20% to 30% less upfront and 40% to 60% more over ten years, once you factor in parts availability, service labor rates, and resale value. The parts pipeline is the killer. When a cable snaps on an off-brand import in year six, you might wait weeks for a replacement — or discover the importer is no longer in business.

Name-brand lifts from Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas have parts pipelines that persist for a decade or more. That’s not a marketing claim; it’s what our own parts inventory looks like across the brands we install. For a Euro specialty shop planning ten to twenty years of ownership, the name-brand upcharge is genuinely a bargain across the ownership window. Long-term ownership math consistently favors the certified brands.

Building the right garage sequence

The right build-out sequence for a shop centered on automotive two post lifts is simple once the myths are cleared: design the shop layout first including bay dimensions and utility routing, pour the slab to spec with 28-day cure time, pull electrical permit and run the 220V drops, schedule freight and install for after cure completes, and coordinate turnover with the install crew for a full function walkthrough. Each step feeds the next. Skipping any of them creates re-work, cost overruns, or safety issues down the line.
