An overlanding builder in West Des Moines called us last fall wanting BendPak 4 post lifts for a home shop where he builds out expedition rigs for other customers. His hitch: his insurance carrier had asked for ALI Gold certification on any lift used for paid work. This is not a common question from hobbyists, but for anyone doing paid customer builds — off-road, restoration, or otherwise — it’s a real one. What ALI Gold Actually Certifies (and What It Doesn’t)
The Automotive Lift Institute is the third-party body that tests and certifies lift equipment against ANSI safety standards. An ALI Gold certification means a specific model — not a family, not a brand — has passed independent lab testing and carries a serialized gold label on the column. It does not mean the lift is stronger, faster, or better welded than an uncertified model. It means someone outside the manufacturer stress-tested it and signed off. Some insurers, some commercial landlords, and some OSHA-adjacent auditors require the gold label for paid work. Home-only hobbyists usually don’t need it. When someone shopping BendPak 4 post lifts asks us about certification, our first question is: is this for paid customer work, or is it your car in your garage?
The West Des Moines Overlander Who Called Us
Our builder was in a mixed situation. His home garage was where he did the work, but he was building rigs for other customers — pallet-loaded roof platforms, drawer systems, secondary battery boxes, and modified oil pans on turbocharged trucks. His engine oil pan gasket work in particular required the truck up in the air for hours, and his carrier wanted documentation. He’d been looking at three or four different BendPak 4 post lifts and had no idea which had current ALI Gold labels. That’s a fair question — the certification list changes when models are updated. We pulled up the current list, matched it to his weight and length needs, and gave him a shortlist of two units to price.
Why an Off-Road Build Needs Real Certification
Off-road builds are heavier than the stock truck. A Tacoma with a rooftop tent, drawer system, dual battery, winch, and steel bumpers is usually 800 to 1,400 pounds over stock. A full expedition F-150 build can add 1,800 pounds. When someone’s building rigs like that as a side business, the vehicles on the lift are heavier than the manufacturer’s showroom weight, and they sit up in the air longer during oil pan gasket work or subframe fabrication. We push those builders toward lifts with real headroom on capacity — 12,000 or 14,000 pounds — and toward models with a current gold label. The extra couple thousand dollars is nothing compared to a claim getting denied.
Comparing BendPak 4 Post Lifts by Certification Level
Not every BendPak 4 post lifts model is currently ALI-Gold. The HD-9 series has had gold-labeled variants over the years; the HDS-14 and HDS-18 series have consistently carried the label on commercial variants. When we quote a builder, we don’t just quote the model number — we quote the label. That means we confirm the certification is current at the time of order, so what shows up on the truck has the gold sticker on the column, not a promise. This matters when the insurance auditor comes through. We’ve had that conversation four times in central Iowa this year alone. Every time, the paperwork is what saved the customer’s coverage.
The Install Day — What Went Right
Our West Des Moines builder had already poured a fresh six-inch slab with 3/4-inch rebar on twelve-inch centers, which is the recipe we recommend anyway. The shop had a fourteen-foot ceiling — plenty for a rise plus roof rack. Install took most of a day for our two-person crew. We anchored, plumbed hydraulic hoses, ran cables, calibrated latch drop, and set final level with shims. Then we cycled the lift twelve times empty, ran the manufacturer’s break-in procedure, and finished with a walk-through on the owner’s actual truck. He signed the ALI paperwork, hung the gold label paperwork in a binder next to his OSHA poster, and got back to building.
The Numbers From the ALI Sticker
Here’s what an ALI Gold sticker gives you in plain English: a serial number tied to the exact tested model, a rated capacity, and the date of manufacture and certification. It’s the same in principle as a UL sticker on a load-bearing electrical device. For our West Des Moines builder, the sticker showed a 14,000-pound capacity, a current-year manufacture date, and a serialized identifier that his insurance carrier could look up in the ALI directory. That was exactly what they wanted. He forwarded the photo, and his rider got approved the following week. That’s the whole point.
What This Build Tells Iowa Buyers
If you’re doing paid work in central or western Iowa — whether that’s building overlanders, restoring muscle cars, or wrenching for hire on the side — get the gold sticker. It’s not marketing. It’s the paperwork trail that keeps you covered when something goes sideways. If you’re building for yourself in your own garage on your own dime, ALI is a nice-to-have, not a must.
