Cable Lock Ladders: How the Primary Safety System Works

The primary safety system on any four-post lift is the cable-and-ladder combination. The runways are supported by four steel cables, each rated at least four times the working load, that route over sheaves at the top of each column and connect to a common carriage. As the runways rise, spring-loaded pawls at each column engage into a toothed ladder mounted on the column’s inside face. When you lower the lift to a rest position, the pawls drop into a tooth, and the runways sit on the mechanical locks rather than on the cables themselves. The important detail for a service manager is that when the lift is at a locked position, the cables carry essentially no load. That means cable stretch, cable damage, or even total cable failure while the lift is parked at a lock position does not drop the car. Secondary Latch Engagement and What Fires When the Cable Slips

Some models add a secondary latch system that engages independently of the primary pawl. The other secondary system worth understanding is the anti-fall wedge on the column carriage. If cable stretch causes one corner of the runway to sit lower than the other three, the anti-fall wedge binds against the column and prevents further descent. It is a passive mechanical device, no electronics, no sensors, and it works whether the lift has power or not. For seasonal storage in an unheated building, that matters because you cannot count on the electrical system being active or reliable through a winter. Cable Stretch Over a Six-Month Storage Cycle

Cables stretch. Every cable, on every four-post lift ever made, stretches slightly over its service life as the individual wire strands seat and equalize under load. For a seasonal storage bay where the lift sits at a locked position for months at a time, cable stretch shows up faster because one corner tends to bear slightly more than another and the loaded cable stretches ahead of the other three.

The consequence, if untreated, is that when you eventually raise the lift to remove the vehicle in spring, one corner rises before the others and the runways twist slightly. The fix is a cable-tension adjustment during pre-season prep. We recommend that any dealership using bendpak 4 post lifts for seasonal storage do a full cable-tension inspection before the storage season starts and again in the spring when vehicles come out. It is a ten-minute check per lift and prevents the twist-out problem entirely. Some dealership service managers try to skip the spring check and just raise the lift, and every year we hear from one who did that and had a customer complaint about a car sitting oddly on the runway. Ten minutes of prep beats an hour of explaining to a customer.

Real Dimensions: Lift Heights, Runway Widths, and Column Spread

For a dealership sizing a storage bay, real dimensions matter more than spec-sheet dimensions. Overall raised height on the mid-range BendPak four-posts runs between seventy-eight and eighty-four inches to the top of the column, depending on model. Runway width, the inside dimension between the two runways, is around eighty-five to ninety inches, wide enough for full-size trucks and dually pickups. Those dimensions dictate your bay layout. For a storage bay that will hold three lifts side by side, you need bay width equal to three times the outside column-to-column dimension plus adequate walk-around clearance, which typically works out to forty feet of clear building width for three lifts. Bay depth needs to accommodate the runway length plus approach ramps plus front and rear clearance for the parked vehicle, and for standard-length lifts that runs around twenty-two feet. Anchor Loads and Slab Requirements for a Storage Bay

Four-post lifts are freestanding, they do not require anchor bolts for structural strength, unlike two-post lifts. That said, most manufacturers recommend anchoring for tip-over protection during loading and unloading, and for seismic zones. For eastern Nebraska, seismic is not a factor, but the anchor recommendation still applies for insurance and best-practice reasons. Slab requirements for a four-post are lighter than for a two-post because the load is spread across four columns and each column applies primarily vertical load. A minimum of four inches of 3,000-PSI concrete is the typical spec, and most commercial dealership slabs meet or exceed that easily. Maintenance Intervals for Bendpak 4 Post Lifts in Seasonal Use

Maintenance for a seasonal-use four-post is different from maintenance for a daily-use lift. The daily-use unit gets an annual ALI-certified inspection and monthly grease-and-look-over. The seasonal-use unit sits still for six months, then works hard for six months, then sits again. That pattern is actually harder on cables and sheaves than continuous use because the loaded cable position does not get exercised. Rust can bloom in the ladder teeth and pawl surfaces if the bay is unheated and humid.

Our recommended interval for bendpak 4 post lifts in seasonal service is a full inspection twice a year: once before the storage season starts, once at spring unload. Both inspections include cable tension check, pawl engagement test, ladder cleaning, hydraulic fluid level and condition (for units with hydraulic power), and a visual weld inspection at all column bases. We also recommend the ALI-certified annual inspection remain in place as a third touchpoint.
