Symmetric vs Asymmetric: What the Terms Mean and Why They Don’t Apply

Symmetric and asymmetric are terms that refer to two-post lift arm geometry. On a symmetric two-post, all four arms are the same length and the vehicle sits centered between the columns. On an asymmetric two-post, the columns are rotated back a few degrees and the front arms are shorter than the rear, which lets the driver door swing open past the column when the vehicle is loaded. That is a real distinction with real trade-offs for a body shop or a fast-service bay.

Where it gets tight is on very narrow-track vehicles, some subcompacts and sports cars, where the wheels sit at the outer edge of the runway width and the inner joint is farther inboard than the tech expects. In those cases the tech has to reach across the runway edge to pull the shaft, which is awkward but manageable. Where runway width matters is on very wide vehicles like dually pickups, motorhomes, or heavy-duty commercial trucks, those need wide runways specifically designed for the wider footprint.

If the dealership sees dually pickups occasionally, they can still be lifted on standard runways as long as the outer tire edge stays on the runway steel, usually it does, but check with a straightedge before the first lift. That distance affects nothing directly for CV work, but the column-to-runway lateral distance does affect how much room the tech has to swing a tool or slide a shaft out sideways.

Standard column-to-runway lateral clearance on bendpak 4 post lifts is generous, usually at least a foot of open air between the runway edge and the column at any lift height. That is enough room to pull any passenger-car half-shaft without hitting the column. Where it gets tight is when the tech is trying to slide the shaft assembly out toward the side of the vehicle rather than pulling it down and out, a technique some techs prefer for certain platforms. In those cases the column is close enough that the shaft cannot fully clear. The workaround is to lower the vehicle slightly, which changes the geometry and gives more side clearance.
