A dealership service manager in Ames sent us blueprints for a new suspension and shock-replacement bay and asked for numbers, not marketing copy. He wanted the exact overall height, drive-through width, and door swing envelope for a car lift automotive that would handle both compact sedans and full-size pickups in the same bay. Fair ask. Overall Column Height at Full Rise
A Rotary SPOA10 asymmetric 2-post runs a nominal overall height of 144 inches at the top of the overhead beam, with the shutoff bar sitting at that point. A Rotary SPO12 symmetric 12K unit runs closer to 150 inches. Challenger CL10 comes in at 145 inches, and the CL12 at 149 inches. Add a rule-of-thumb six inches of service clearance for a technician working on a raised hood, and the practical ceiling minimum lands between 150 and 156 inches depending on model. An Ames dealership bay with a truss ceiling at 14 feet clean (168 inches) has room for any of these units. A bay with a duct or light run at 152 inches has room only for the SPOA10 or the CL10 without a low-ceiling variant. We start every dimension conversation at the overall-height number, because it is the constraint that decides everything else on the spec sheet.
Drive-Through Width Between Columns
Drive-through width is the clear space between columns at floor level. Rotary SPO10 lists 103 inches. SPOA10 asymmetric lists 100 inches because the columns are set slightly closer to accommodate the asymmetric arm rotation. Challenger CL10 lists 104 inches. For a suspension bay that will roll in an F-250 with a mirror width around 96 inches, 100 inches of drive-through is tight and 104 inches is comfortable. For sedan-only work anything above 88 inches drives clean. An Ames dealership doing mixed body-styles needs the higher end of the range. If the bay is planning to see a Super Duty on the same lift as a Corolla, we spec for the pickup and let the sedan enjoy the extra room. The car lift automotive dimensions on drive-through cannot be changed after install, and this number is the one dealership managers regret most when it comes up short.
Arm Reach Front and Rear
Rotary SPOA10 asymmetric front arms retract to 25 inches and extend to 47 inches. Rear arms retract to 36 inches and extend to 60 inches. Challenger CL10 similar. For a compact Honda Civic the front pickup sits around 30 inches from the column, which is inside the front-arm minimum. Good. For an F-250 the rear pickup sits around 56 inches, inside the rear-arm maximum. Also good. But a car lift automotive spec that has minimum arm reach at 30 inches will not hold a Civic — the arm will not retract far enough to reach the pickup point. Always check minimum arm reach against your shortest-wheelbase vehicle, not just maximum against the longest. Ames dealership service managers who miss this end up with a lift that handles the trucks but cannot service the sedans in the same day.
Overhead Door Swing Envelope
Overhead door swing eats into the vertical envelope more than any duct or light. A sectional door with a standard track curve reaches its highest point around eight-foot-two above the door opening when fully open. If the door opening is nine feet tall, the top of the open door sits at seventeen feet-two inches above the floor. That is well above any 2-post column, so the door is clear. But if the door opening is twelve feet tall (a truck-service door), the top of the open door sits at twenty feet-two inches. Also clear. The problem shows up on jamb-mounted low-profile tracks that stay near the ceiling once open — those hover at ten to eleven feet. A car lift automotive column at 144 inches will collide with a low-profile track sitting at 132 inches. Measure with the door open. Not closed.
Suspension and Shock Work Requirements
Suspension and shock replacement pulls the wheel off the hub, compresses the coil spring with a spring compressor, and swaps the strut assembly. The tech needs waist-height access to the strut top and floor access to the strut bottom. On a raised lift the strut top sits at chest-to-head height when the lift is at working height, which is around 48 to 54 inches of pad rise. That means the tech never needs full rise for suspension work, and the ceiling clearance for full rise is not the driving constraint. What matters is arm clearance from the rocker on the vehicle at working height. Rotary and Challenger pad kits include reach extenders that keep the arm out of the strut work zone. Specify those pads on a suspension-focused car lift automotive quote. They are cheap and they save the tech time on every job.
Anchor Layout and Slab Depth
Rotary SPO10 anchors set at 5-1/2 inches of embed in a minimum four-inch slab at 3,000 psi. SPO12 requires a bit more embed and a bit thicker slab. Challenger CL10 and CL12 track similar specs. An Ames dealership new-build usually pours a six-inch slab with rebar and a vapor barrier, so anchors are straightforward. Existing dealership bays with unknown slab age get a core sample before we quote anchors. Anchor torque is 90 to 100 ft-lb depending on the specific kit, and we torque-log every anchor at install.
