Step One: Slab Before Anything Else
Any car lift automotive install starts at the concrete. For a Marion family shop rebuilding an old bay, the slab is often mid-century with rebar of unknown pattern and thickness. A core sample takes an hour. Rotary specifies a minimum four inches of 3,000 psi concrete for a 10K 2-post. Challenger tracks the same. If the sample comes back at four inches or better, we build on the existing slab. If it comes back thinner or lower strength, the choice is a pad extension under the column footprint or an overlay pour of the whole bay. Overlay pours cure for twenty-eight days. That timeline drives the rest of the build-out. We put slab decision first because it is the only step you cannot revisit after everything else is done. Step Two: Ceiling and Overhead Utilities
The lowest obstruction inside the lift footprint is what sets your maximum lift height. A standard 10K 2-post overall height at full rise runs around 145 inches. Add six inches of service clearance and the practical ceiling minimum is 151 inches. Ideally you finalize overhead utility routing after the lift model is picked, because the lift envelope dictates where light and heater lines can and cannot land. Step Three: Electrical Rough-In
A car lift automotive needs one 220V single-phase circuit or one 208V three-phase depending on the lift model. Rotary SPO10 and Challenger CL10 both offer a 220V single-phase power unit as standard for shop applications. A dedicated 30-amp circuit with a disconnect within sight of the lift is code in most Iowa jurisdictions. Rough-in the electrical after the lift is picked but before the slab work is signed off, because the disconnect box gets mounted on the column-adjacent wall and needs to clear the lift envelope. Family shops that skip the disconnect and rely on a shared circuit end up tripping breakers under load. Do the circuit right at rough-in and it is done for the life of the lift. This step also covers the compressor line if the shop is upgrading air alongside the lift.
Step Four: Floor Drain and Fluid Handling
Oil changes and fluid service are the primary use case for this Marion shop, so the floor drain layout matters. Most Iowa jurisdictions require an oil-water separator on any drain that handles automotive fluids. If the existing drain does not have one, the rebuild is the time to add it. Position the drain under the drive-through of the lift, offset slightly toward the front so it catches oil drops during transmission and engine service. Step Five: Lift Anchor and Install

Skip any step above and install day gets ugly.
Step Six: Workflow and Storage Around the Lift
After the lift is in, the bay build-out finishes with the workflow around it. Oil catch, drain pans, filter rack, fluid caddies, and tool storage all get positioned so the tech does not walk more than a few steps to any of them from the lift. A well-designed oil-and-fluid bay puts the drain pan on a rolling cart under the transmission, the filter rack on the column-adjacent wall, and the fluid caddies within arm reach of the working side of the vehicle.
