Start With the Ceiling, Not the Lift
Every car lift automotive purchase begins with a laser measurement of the ceiling at the lowest point in the bay. Roof trusses, HVAC ducts, and light fixtures are the real ceiling — not the peak. A standard-height overhead 2-post lift needs 12 feet of clearance to the crossbar, and the crossbar itself sits 12 feet 4 inches above the floor once installed. If your low point is under 12 feet, you have two options: a baseplate lift (crossbar at floor level) or a low-ceiling overhead configuration. Do this measurement before you look at any brochure or watch any YouTube review. The Iowa-Missouri border shop had a 10-foot 9-inch ceiling under a suspended fluorescent fixture. That measurement alone eliminated every overhead lift on the market and made the baseplate configuration mandatory. It saved him from ordering a lift that would have been returned at his freight expense.
Overhead: The Default for a Reason
An overhead 2-post lift is the default in most working shops because you walk clean between the columns. No cable tray on the floor, no tripping hazard, no oil pan or transmission jack catching on anything. For a restoration shop rolling cars in and out on dollies daily, that clean floor matters. Overhead lifts also have a shutoff bar in the crossbar that automatically stops the lift when a vehicle contacts it. That is a real safety feature you do not get on a baseplate. If your ceiling is 12 feet or taller and your shop mostly works on cars and light trucks, overhead is almost always the right answer. Rotary SPO12 and Challenger CL12 both ship in overhead configuration by default and both have decades of parts availability behind them.
Baseplate: When Ceiling Wins
A baseplate 2-post lift routes the hydraulic hoses and safety cables through a channel bolted to the floor between the columns. You gain 8-12 inches of vertical clearance because there is no overhead bar. You lose the shutoff bar and you have a floor channel to step over. On a restoration shop under a 10 to 11 foot ceiling, baseplate is the difference between installing a lift and not installing one. He gave up 2 inches of drive-thru width where the cable channel takes floor space, and he gained the ability to actually raise a truck to working height in his shop. Baseplate is not worse than overhead — it is different, and it is the right choice under a low ceiling.
Symmetric vs Asymmetric Arms and Restoration Cars
Symmetric 2-post lifts have columns 90 degrees to each other and arms of equal length front and rear. Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns 30 degrees and use shorter front arms. Asymmetric was invented so the driver’s door clears the column when you open it after lifting. For a car lift automotive setup used on classic muscle cars — long hoods, forward weight bias — symmetric with equal arms is often the better structural choice. Muscle car balance points sit farther forward than a modern sedan. Ask about balance point before you assume asymmetric is right. Capacity: Why 10K Is Usually Enough
A restoration shop working on cars up to full-size trucks needs 10,000 lb of capacity, not 12K or 15K. A big-block muscle car weighs about 3,800 lb. A modern crew-cab F-150 is 5,500 lb. Even a heavy-half diesel loaded is under 8,000 lb. The 10K rating gives comfortable margin. Paying for 12K or 15K on a restoration lift is buying capacity you will never touch. Capacity dollars go further spent on longer arms, higher pad adapters, or better cable systems. That is a car lift automotive spend that shows up every week — not once every never. Where 12K makes sense is a general repair shop pulling occasional 3/4-ton diesels. Restoration and daily maintenance mixed, 10K is right and leaves budget for adapters.
Pad Height and Frame Adapters
Restoration cars often need care around unibody pinch welds, factory jack points, and rocker panels. Standard 2-post arm pads sit 4 to 5 inches above the arm. That is often not tall enough on a lowered car or a car with side skirts. A set of 3-inch and 6-inch stackable pad adapters is a low-to-mid three-figure sum and turns a car lift automotive setup from usable to safe on every car in the shop. On a numbers-matching restoration, a bent rocker panel is not fixed cheaply.
