Myth 1: Ten-foot ceilings are plenty for any car lift automotive setup
We hear this in almost every first phone call, and it’s usually wrong. A standard clearheight two-post asymmetric lift wants twelve feet minimum to the lowest ceiling obstruction, and taller if you plan to raise a Rivian R1T or a Model X off the arms with the doors open. On EV pickups the roof line already sits above sixty inches at ride height; add three or four feet of lift travel and any low-slung joist, HVAC drop, or garage-door track becomes a problem. Before we quote a car lift automotive package for a Davenport shop, we ask for the true clear height — not the peak height — because that low spot is what determines what will fit. Ten-foot ceilings only work with a low-rise scissor or a portable mid-rise; they will not support a full-rise two-post. If ceilings are the constraint, we usually pivot the conversation toward a mid-rise or a home-storage four-post rated for storage stacking.
Myth 2: The overhead door will just clear when it opens

Roll-up commercial doors sit above the header but the drum eats another foot of ceiling. Myth 3: EV weight isn’t a big deal on a 9,000 lb lift
A loaded Rivian R1T is 7,150 lb curb, plus battery pack weight distributed heavily under the floor. A Hummer EV pickup pushes 9,000 lb bare. A Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat is around 6,500 lb. If your shop is servicing full-size EV trucks, a 9,000 lb-rated lift is running near the top of its envelope every time; we quote 10,000 lb minimum for any EV specialty shop and 12,000 lb if you plan to work on heavy-duty electric platforms. That capacity bump usually means Rotary SPO12 territory or a Challenger CL10V3 pushed to its ceiling-mounted equalizer package. We would rather sell you a lift you never worry about than one you’re stress-cycling at every rotation.
Myth 4: You can put a car lift automotive on any garage slab
Two-post lifts anchor through the floor with wedge anchors that need at least four inches of 3,000 psi concrete cured a full 28 days. Older Davenport shops we survey often have three-inch slabs, or four-inch slabs poured over ungraded fill, or expansion joints running right through the intended column spots. Any of those kills a standard anchor pattern and forces us into thickened-pad options: cutting a two-by-two square out at each column, digging six inches deep, and repouring with rebar keyed into the surrounding slab. That work is doable and we’ve done it plenty, but it adds two days to an install and it needs cure time before we can safely anchor. Before ordering the lift, get a slab core sample or at minimum a straight-edge check for cracks and joints. Skipping the slab check is how a car lift automotive project turns into a concrete project.
Myth 5: Wiring the lift is just like plugging in a compressor
Two-post lifts we sell come in a couple of voltage flavors: 208-230V single-phase or 208-230V three-phase. A single-phase pump uses a large starting capacitor and needs a dedicated 30A circuit; a three-phase pump uses a magnetic starter and a completely different disconnect. Sizing that wrong is a common EV-shop mistake because Davenport industrial parks tend to have three-phase available but many older automotive buildings do not. If you order a three-phase pump and only have single-phase to the panel, the lift sits in the crate until an electrician runs new service. Confirm the pump spec on the sales order, confirm the panel amperage, and confirm the run distance to the column before you commit. Seasonal storage rotates the math on car lift automotive layouts
