You know what a properly torqued base plate feels like when you kick the column. You know the sound a safety cam makes when it locks. You know what a worn arm restraint gear looks like because you have replaced them. So when you spec a residential lift, you want the same fundamentals: multi-position mechanical locks in both columns, spring-loaded steel arm restraints, and a hydraulic circuit that will not creep down overnight. Arm Restraints — What to Look For

There are three flavors on the market: plastic gear (bad, avoid), fiber-reinforced polymer (mediocre), and spring-loaded steel gear (what you want). The steel gear engages the moment the lift arm rises off its rest position, locking the arm at the swing angle you set it to. Even if the lift dropped hydraulic pressure to zero, the arm cannot swing free while a vehicle is loaded. That is the whole point. During transmission service work — where you are removing 200-plus pounds of transmission from the vehicle centerline and shifting the load balance — a failed arm restraint is a life-threatening event. Ask for the arm restraint spec by name when you quote, and if the salesperson does not know it off the top of their head, that tells you what you need to know.
Safety-Cam Engagement and Why Every Foot Matters
A car lift for house use should engage mechanical safety cams every 4 to 6 inches of column travel, and when you park the lift you should hear it drop onto a hard mechanical lock, not sit on hydraulic pressure. This matters because hydraulics leak. Every hydraulic cylinder loses a tiny bit of pressure overnight, and by the time you crawl under the vehicle the next morning to finish the transmission job you started yesterday, the lift could have crept down half an inch. If it is sitting on a mechanical cam, it has not moved. The commercial lifts you are used to in your alignment shop have this. Residential ALI-Gold lifts have this. Cheap imports usually do not, or they have a single lock position at full height only. Base-Plate Bolt Torque and the 24-Hour Check

We torque them at install, then come back and re-torque at the 24-hour mark. Concrete relaxes slightly after the initial anchor set, and if you skip the re-torque you leave 5 to 15 percent of clamping force on the table. On a tire shop lift you would never skip that step; do not skip it at home either. If you are installing yourself, buy or borrow a real torque wrench (not a pipe extension on a ratchet), follow the manufacturer’s torque sequence, and mark the calendar for a 24-hour re-torque. Then torque again at six months and annually thereafter. Overhead Shut-Off vs Low-Ceiling Configuration
Most residential two-post lifts ship with an overhead shut-off bar — a beam that runs between the tops of the columns and carries the hydraulic lines and a physical shut-off switch that stops the lift when the vehicle roof contacts it. If your ceiling is tight (under 11 feet), you can order a low-ceiling configuration where the shut-off is a floor-mounted plate instead. Both are safe when installed correctly, but the choice matters for transmission work: the overhead bar can interfere with a vehicle-mounted engine hoist or a beam winch, and the low-ceiling floor version leaves the overhead space clear. Weigh what you will actually do on the lift. If it is 95 percent tires and alignment checks, overhead bar is fine. If it is transmission drops and driveline work, spec the low-ceiling floor-plate version even if your ceiling is tall enough for either. The Underbody Access Question for Transmission Work
Transmission service on a car lift for house means clearance in three dimensions: enough lift height to walk under, enough side-to-side clearance to swing a transmission jack, and enough front-to-back clearance to slide the transmission out on the jack without hitting a column. A standard 9K two-post gives you 74 inches of lift height at full extension, which is plenty for most jobs. What matters more is column spacing: 100 inches inside-to-inside is the residential norm, and a full-size truck transmission on a jack needs every inch of it. If you are servicing full-size or heavy-duty trucks, upgrade to a 12K two-post which typically has 105-inch column spacing and taller columns. When to Call an Installer Instead of DIY
Even for a tire shop owner who has hung dozens of lifts, we recommend hiring an installer for your own car lift for house install unless you have all the tools and a helper.
