An independent pro shop owner in Urbandale asked us last summer to compare two car lift for storage configurations for a new shop build, both of which he could pour the slab for that same week. His main work was oil changes and fluid service, which is a high-volume short-cycle bay where lift throughput matters more than raw capacity. We are Auto Lift Services in Ames, Iowa, and this is the side-by-side we gave him, with the build-out sequencing notes so the slab, wiring, and drainage all lined up correctly the first time.

Setup A: 9,000 lb Standard Four-Post, Two Runways

Setup A is a straightforward 9,000 lb standard four-post car lift for storage with plain runways, no bridge jack, and no caster kit. This is the least-expensive functional storage lift we sell, and it is what we recommend when the primary job of the lift is holding a car up top while the tech does oil changes and fluid service on the vehicle underneath. Standard runway width fits every passenger vehicle plus half-ton pickups. Cycle time from the ground to the top lock is about 55 seconds on a single-phase power unit. In an Urbandale oil-change shop doing volume, that speed is right where you want it. The tradeoff on Setup A is that if you ever need to service the stored vehicle itself (drop a wheel, pull a rotor on the top car), you have to bring it back to the ground first. For a pure oil-change bay, that rarely comes up.

Setup B: 9,000 lb Extended-Height With Rolling Bridge Jacks

Setup B is a 9,000 lb extended-height car lift for storage with rolling bridge jacks on the runways. The extra height gives about 82 inches at top lock instead of 74. The bridge jacks let a tech lift wheels off the runways while the vehicle is up top, which turns the storage bay into a genuine second working bay for wheel work, brake service, or tire rotation. For an independent pro shop owner in Urbandale who is only running oil changes today but expects to add tire and brake work over the next couple of years, Setup B is the future-proof choice. Cycle time is a hair slower than Setup A, maybe 60 seconds instead of 55, because the columns are taller. Cost lands about twenty to twenty-five percent higher landed. The extra cost is easy to justify if you expect the shop’s service mix to broaden.

Slab Pour Sequencing to Match Each Setup

Slab pour sequencing is the same for both setups but the specs differ. For Setup A, we spec a 4-inch slab minimum at 3,000 PSI with fiber mesh, which is a standard commercial pour. For Setup B, we spec a 5-inch slab at 3,500 PSI with rebar on 18-inch centers under the column pads, because the taller lift moves the loaded center of gravity higher and creates a larger overturning moment on the anchors. For an Urbandale independent building new, the upcharge to pour the whole shop floor to Setup B spec is small compared to pouring different sections at different thicknesses. We recommend hitting the higher spec across the whole footprint. That also gives you flexibility to add a second lift later without a slab redo. Cure time is the same 28 days either way. Do not bolt to green concrete.

Wiring and Compressed Air Layout

Both car lift for storage setups need a dedicated 30-amp 220V single-phase branch on #10 wire, with a lockable disconnect within sight. The difference on wiring is trivial. Compressed air layout is more interesting. On Setup A with plain runways, you want a compressed air drop at each of the four columns so a tech has hose reach anywhere around the vehicle. On Setup B with rolling bridge jacks, the bridge jacks themselves are air-driven on some models, so you want a higher-capacity air line running to a manifold at the front columns, then hard-plumbed lines to the bridge jacks along each runway. The air line for the bridge jacks specifically needs to be 3/8 inch inside diameter or larger to keep pressure up when a tech is pumping the jack under load. Undersize the line and the bridge jack pumps slow. We spec 1/2 inch for headroom.

Drainage and Drip Handling for High-Volume Oil Work

For a high-volume oil change bay running a car lift for storage overhead, drainage matters. On Setup A, we spec drip trays that catch the entire stored-vehicle footprint plus a couple of inches of overhang. Full-length trays, not the short center-only trays some manufacturers ship as standard. The reason is simple: on an oil-change bay, the vehicle underneath is often getting drained, and any drip from the stored vehicle above lands in the drain pan and contaminates the used oil recovery, which the recycler will charge more for or refuse. Setup B benefits from the same trays plus a squeegee catch under the bridge jack rails. For the shop floor itself, we always recommend a floor drain in the middle of the working bay tied to an oil-water separator upstream of the sanitary sewer. Iowa DNR is friendly about this if you set it up correctly at build time.

Throughput Math: Bays Per Hour on Each Setup

Throughput math is where an independent pro shop owner really sees the difference between the two car lift for storage setups. On Setup A, cycle time is about 55 seconds up plus 45 seconds down, so 100 seconds of lift time per oil change. Add draining, filter, refill, and the vehicle-in / vehicle-out shuffle, and a good tech runs about six oil changes per hour through the working bay while a car sits stored up top. On Setup B, cycle time is a hair slower but the bridge jack lets the tech do a tire rotation on the stored vehicle without moving it. If the shop’s service mix eventually includes rotations and quick brake checks, Setup B keeps throughput up on the storage bay too. Over a typical eight-hour day, Setup B adds roughly ten to fifteen billable hours per week in future-service potential. That is real revenue.

Which One We Would Order for an Urbandale Independent

Our recommendation to the Urbandale independent, and to any car lift for storage buyer in a similar Des Moines-metro build, is Setup B if the shop plans to stay open more than five years. The premium over Setup A is small on the ten-year total cost, and the flexibility to add wheel and brake work to the storage bay without buying a second lift usually recovers the difference inside two years of expanded service.
