A rural farm shop owner along the Iowa-Missouri border called us last month about a car lift for storage that would also let him do engine oil pan gasket work on his own pickup, which meant a bay that stored a truck up top and let him drop a pan on a second vehicle underneath. Rural pole shops have their own set of things to verify that suburban and city shops do not, especially ceiling height at midspan and the swing arc of a big overhead door. Item 1: Measure Ceiling Height at Midspan, Not the Wall
The first item on the pre-purchase checklist for a rural car lift for storage is measuring ceiling height at midspan, not at the wall. Almost every pole shop has a truss chord that dips one to two feet lower in the middle of the building than at the sidewall. A 12-foot sidewall pole barn with a scissor truss usually measures 132 inches at midspan, not 144 like the sidewall would suggest. On a farm shop where the lift is going in the middle of the floor, midspan is what limits your lift height, not the sidewall. Measure with a tape and a helper, from the finished slab to the lowest permanent obstruction directly over where the lift columns will land. Do this before you order anything. Rural buyers get this wrong most often because the sidewall number feels like the honest number, but it is not the number the lift columns will encounter.
Item 2: Overhead Door Swing and Track Clearance
The second item is overhead door swing and track clearance around the car lift for storage location. Most rural farm shops have a 12-foot-wide by 12-foot-tall sectional overhead door on at least one end, and the door track curves back into the shop for about 8 to 10 feet before flattening along the ceiling. If your lift columns land under that curved section of track, the top of the raised lift can hit the track. We have measured a couple of Iowa-Missouri border shops where the columns were positioned so that raising the lift to top lock brought the vehicle within two or three inches of the retracted door track. That is too tight. Move the lift back into the shop at least 12 feet from the inside face of the door header before finalizing the position. This is trivial to check with a tape measure and impossible to fix after anchoring.
Item 3: Slab Age, Thickness, and Frost Line
The third item is slab age, thickness, and frost-line consideration for a rural car lift for storage. On an older farm shop slab (say, 20 to 40 years old), the slab may be as thin as 3.5 inches with no rebar. That is not enough for any modern four-post storage lift. Coring a small test hole in the slab in the corner tells you exactly what you have. The frost line in southern Iowa and northern Missouri runs 36 to 42 inches deep, and if the slab was poured directly on grade without proper base prep, frost heave can crack it seasonally. If your slab shows spring cracking that closes up in summer, the lift’s anchors will loosen over freeze-thaw cycles and the manufacturer’s warranty will not cover the failure. We measure and test slabs before we quote lifts for rural jobs. It is free and it saves phone calls two years out.
Item 4: 220V Availability and Panel Amperage
The fourth item is confirming 220V single-phase availability and enough panel amperage for a car lift for storage. Many rural farm shops are fed from a 100-amp service that also runs the house, the well pump, and the shop’s air compressor. Adding a 30-amp branch to the lift can push the total demand past what the utility will provide without an upgrade. Before ordering the lift, add up the running loads on the service (house + well + compressor + lift + heater) and check whether a utility upgrade is needed. Along the Iowa-Missouri border, the utility upgrade timeline can be six to eight weeks, so start that conversation early. If the panel is already loaded, a rural farm shop owner has three options: upgrade the service, add a subpanel with load management, or move some loads to a separate meter. Any of these takes weeks, not days.
Item 5: Vehicle Weight and Wheelbase Range
The fifth item is confirming vehicle weight and wheelbase range for the vehicles the car lift for storage will actually hold. On a rural farm shop, the stored vehicle mix often includes a farm pickup (7,000 to 8,500 lb curb), a family SUV (5,000 to 6,000 lb), and occasionally a classic project truck (2,500 to 4,500 lb). Wheelbase runs from about 100 inches on a compact car to 158 inches on a long-bed pickup. A 9,000 lb four-post with 158-inch usable runway length covers all of the above. A 12,000 lb four-post gives you more capacity margin at only modest cost. For engine oil pan gasket work on a heavy pickup, we like the 12,000 lb because the stored vehicle is often the heaviest thing in the shop and you want capacity margin, not headroom right at the limit. Write down every vehicle you expect to store or service before you order.
Item 6: Delivery Access for a Rural Address
The sixth item is delivery access to the rural address. A car lift for storage ships on a semi-trailer, palletized, about 42 by 96 by 90 inches, roughly 1,800 to 2,200 pounds depending on capacity. Most rural farm shops have a gravel driveway and a wide turnaround where a semi can back in. Some do not. Before we quote freight, we ask the customer to send a photo of the driveway approach and confirm the trailer can reach the shop. If it cannot, we can arrange a smaller box truck for an additional fee, or the customer can pick up the freight at a nearby terminal. Along the Iowa-Missouri border, the nearest freight terminals with liftgate service are typically in Des Moines or Ottumwa. Confirm access before ordering, because a re-routed freight delivery is expensive and delays install by a week or two.
Item 7: Anchor Layout and Column Position Check
The seventh and final item is verifying anchor layout and column positions before drilling the first hole in the slab. For a car lift for storage, the four column pads land in a rectangle roughly 9 feet by 15 feet, depending on the specific model. Chalk that rectangle on the slab before ordering. Walk around it. Open your overhead door and confirm you can drive a full-length pickup in and onto the runways without hitting the columns. Check that the front columns clear any workbench, air compressor, or shelving that will stay against the walls. Then and only then, sign the order.
