A car lift for storage is one of the highest-ROI additions an independent pro shop owner in the Des Moines metro can make, especially when the same bay has to keep brake service and rotor swaps moving every day. Configuration A: Standard-Rise 9,000 lb Four-Post

The first setup we quote most independent pro shop owners is a standard-rise 9,000 lb four-post with about 72 to 75 inches of usable lifting height at the top lock. This is the workhorse car lift for storage when your bay ceiling sits under 11 feet, which describes a large share of the older masonry shops in Beaverdale, Windsor Heights, and the near-metro. You can park a sedan, an SUV up to a mid-size crossover, or a project car on the runways and still get roughly 65 to 68 inches of under-clearance with the vehicle up top. That is enough to walk under to change oil, pull a wheel, or swing a rotor off the hub without stooping. The tradeoff is that this configuration does not leave enough room to swing a full-height truck door under a tall SUV parked on the runways. On a passenger-car independent, that is rarely an issue. Freight into the metro runs about a week from order, and we can usually schedule install within two weeks after that.

Configuration B: Extended-Height Four-Post With Casters

The second setup is an extended-height four-post at 82 to 84 inches of top lock, usually spec’d with a caster kit so the whole lift can roll to the wall when the bay needs to be clear. This is the car lift for storage we recommend when the shop has 12-foot sidewalls, which is very common in the newer pole buildings around Grimes, Waukee, and Norwalk. You get almost seven feet of under-clearance up top, enough to service a full-height pickup underneath the stored vehicle rather than only a sedan. The caster kit is the piece a lot of independent pro shop owners overlook. It lets you shove the lift out of the way when you need to roll a diagnostic scope or an oil-drain rig in from the shop floor. Configuration B does need a slightly stiffer slab and a bit more anchor length, which we cover below, and it runs about fifteen to twenty percent more than Configuration A landed. For a working shop the swing-a-truck-door clearance almost always pays for itself.

Slab Thickness: What Each Setup Actually Needs

Slab thickness is the single most common question we get from independent pro shop owners on a car lift for storage. For Configuration A, the manufacturer minimum is a four-inch reinforced slab at 3,000 PSI or better, cured a minimum of 28 days. That covers almost every commercial slab poured in the Des Moines metro since the mid-1990s and matches a home-shop pole barn poured with fiber mesh at four inches. For Configuration B we spec 4.25 to 5 inches minimum, because the taller columns move the loaded center of gravity higher, which means a bigger overturning moment on the anchor bolts if a vehicle is stored at the top lock overnight. If you are pouring new slab, tell the concrete crew to hit five inches under all four column pads. It costs almost nothing at pour time and takes the anchor-pullout question off the table for the life of the lift. We measure the slab on every install and refuse to bolt to anything thinner than manufacturer spec.

Rebar, Fiber, and Cracks We See in Older Shops

Rebar is not strictly required by either manufacturer, but it changes what the anchor is grabbing. In a fiber-mesh slab, which is the standard pour in most Iowa pole buildings for the last fifteen years, the concrete around the anchor is holding the load in shear. In a rebar slab, cracks propagate slower and the anchor has a better chance of holding through a freeze-thaw cycle. When we install a car lift for storage in an older shop, say a 1970s block building in the older parts of Des Moines proper, we always ask about visible slab cracks first. A hairline crack two feet from a column pad is fine. A crack directly under where the anchor bolt will land means we either shift the lift or the customer breaks that slab section out and pours a fresh pad. We have walked away from three metro jobs in the last two years because the customer wanted us to anchor over a bad crack, and we do not do it. It is not worth the phone call in six months.

Doing Brake Service Under a Stored Vehicle

Here is what independent pro shop owners actually get out of a car lift for storage: your slow-turning classic or your winter driver goes on top, and the daily bay throughput keeps running underneath. For brake service and rotor swaps specifically, the standard-rise Configuration A gives 65-plus inches of clean access to hubs and rotors on the car underneath. You can drop a wheel, run a caliper piston back, and torque lugs without moving the top vehicle at all. The extended-height Configuration B gives you enough overhead to swing a truck door and use a floor-mount rotor cart. On both, we spec drip trays as an add-on so the stored car does not spot new pads or a fresh floor on the vehicle below. This is why a car lift for storage pays for itself even in a two-bay independent. You are effectively adding half a bay of throughput without adding square footage, and central Iowa shops routinely recover the lift cost in under fourteen months on brake work alone.

Ceiling Height and Real Clearance Numbers

Real ceiling clearance matters more than nameplate lift height. On Configuration A, you need roughly 116 to 120 inches of usable ceiling to raise a mid-size SUV to the top lock and still clear light fixtures and truss chords. On Configuration B, plan on 138 to 144 inches. Sidewall height alone is not enough. The number we measure is the lowest permanent obstruction over the lift footprint, whether that is a bar joist, a heater unit, a light fixture, or an insulation batt. In the Des Moines metro we install a lot of storage lifts in 12-foot-sidewall pole buildings where the truss chord dips to 132 inches at midspan. In those buildings, Configuration B fits a passenger sedan up top but not a full-size SUV, so we usually recommend either raising the truss chord or going with Configuration A. We come out and measure before we quote the lift, no upsell and no charge for the measure inside our normal service area.

What This Costs and How We Would Order It

Landed cost varies with freight and options, but Configuration A lands in the mid-single-digit-thousands range for the lift itself, plus install for an independent pro shop owner in the Des Moines metro. Configuration B adds roughly fifteen to twenty percent for the lift plus the caster kit. Drip trays, poly floor mats, and a jack tray each add a couple hundred more.
